Chapter 139: Devastation II

Chapter 139: Devastation II
Rojan exhaled an exasperated breath.

From what Earnest had explained to him when things had calmed down, Candice had run away with Everette, her maidservant because she discovered a second contract Wayne prepared for her.

Secondly, Everette was a traitor and had probably lured Candice into a trap set by Waylon.

Hmm, he knew that Wayne's rejection of his mate would lead to a sour end.

No doubt, Wayne's wolf had come out to grieve and lash out in anger due to the loss of its mate. In the process, it disrupted Wayne's sanity and emotional balance.

It was really a messed up situation.

"Candice is traveling alongside our king, they are spending quality time together," Rojan lied.

"I doubt you are telling the truth, because a little birdie told me they saw her and her maidservant travel across the central portal alone," the third elder interjected.

"Really, where is Candice? Where did she go?" the second elder repeated.

"Why do you pester me for Candice when I am the Beta here, the second in command to the king?" Rojan pretended to be angry to dissuade them from further inquiries about her.

"But I want Candice, she is our Luna, is she not?" The second elder insisted.

"You all dealt with me in the past when the king was absent, why is it any different?" He pointed out.

"That was before we had a Luna, now we do. Give us Candice," the second elder urged.

"Oh for heaven's sake, behave yourself, Augustus. We all know the only reason why you demand for her is because your wife badgers you day and night, to get another of Candice's chairs for herself," Thaddeus cut in.

"And so? Is it inappropriate to want another one? I have seen you asking around and investigating how to acquire some for yourself too," Augustus retorted.

"At least, have some shame. I went about making inquiries using my own means. I did not sit around and pretend to care for our Luna's wellbeing when your only interest in her is her chair," Thaddeus fired back.

"How do you know I do not care for her wellbeing?" Augustus countered.

"It is obvious," Thaddeus muttered.

"How is it obvious? Who says I cannot care for her and also desire her chair?" Augustus questioned.

Rojan put a hand to his head. It was not easy being King. Wayne had been doing an excellent job so far and he had not felt the weight of the burden, like he did now.

He was glad he was not king, and could not wait for Wayne to recover and return to his duties. He was happy to assist, he just could not handle the pressure alone.

"Enough." He raised his voice to stop the bickering back and forth.

"Why are you telling me enough, he is the one you should tell to stop his gloating," Thaddeus turned his attention to him.

"Who said it was you he was addressing? Do you think yourself more important than I?" Augustus opposed.

"It is not my fault you feel inferior. If I say he is talking to me, then he is talking to me. Deal with it," Thaddeus reinforced.

By the moon goddess, he was getting irritated by the second. How did these old men fight over something as insignificant as a simple word?

He had better things to do than stand here and humor old men who evidently had nothing else to worry about.

"If you persist with your argument, I will turn around and leave. This will be the last of me you will see till the king returns," he announced loudly to their hearing.

"This is exactly why I was asking after Candice, her ladyship is more appealing to deal with than you or the king," Augustus stated.

"True," the other two elders echoed.

Thaddeus grudgingly nodded in agreement.

"Try to contain yourselves a little more, she would soon be back to tend to you herself," he told them.

In his heart, he prayed to whatever deity that was listening, that Candice would be safe and sound until they came for her.

Aragon, who was always quiet and introverted. He rarely spoke unless he had something very important to say, cleared his throat, and said "I will come by the house later, there is something we must discuss about."

"A meeting in secret, I see," one of the elders sneered with jealousy.

"Why will you not discuss with us present here?" another added.

"Is it something we should not know? Is it about the king, Luna, or the plane?" Augustus queried.

"Tell us, Aragon, you keep too many secrets," Thaddeus grumbled.

"Some things are revealed to a few, other things are made available in public," Aragon simply said and fell silent.

"You have spoken, yet not a single thing did we understand," Augustus remarked.

The chambers erupted once again in a noisy banter, as they entered into a heated argument among themselves about who kept secrets and who did not.

Rojan nodded to Aragon who remained silent, then turned around and left.

Blocking out the voices behind him.
