Chapter 135: The Attack II
Chapter 135: The Attack II
The third beetle flapped its wings and took flight, it snatched up one of the men and ascended up to the sky.
"Do something Zipporah, don't just stand there!" The man left on the ground to fight against the two beetles snapped at her.
"I am the one paying you, why should I do the work for you?" She yawned and put a hand to her mouth, looking bored.
"If we all get killed, of what good is your gold?" He retorted.
"Okay, I'll help you," she snorted and formed a large fireball in her hand and sent it to the sky to hit the beetle. The beetle lost its strength and began to fall to the ground.
She made two more fireballs and threw one to each of the remaining beetles on the ground. They quivered and became weak.
The beetle from the sky crashed to the ground a few meters away from the house clearing. Before it reached the ground, the man it was carrying had jumped to the side, allowing it to crash alone. The body shattered to pieces from the momentum of the crash.
The two beetles left became a slug version of themselves. Their mobility had slowed down considerably, making them easy to fight.
Upstairs, Sabine saw that her line of defense was collapsing. She needed to increase her pace to be able to escape before they killed her last two beetles.
She had just pushed aside her Moroccan rug, when she saw the pouch lodged underneath it. She quickly grabbed it and inched over to the restroom door, in what remained of her parlor. She sprinkled some pixie dust and chanted some words and her portal was activated and ready to cross.
"Hurry, come over Bernice, I found it," she called across the room where Bernice was hunched over a heap of books.
"Really, that's awesome," Bernice replied happily and got to her feet. She was stepping over when a hand shot out and grabbed her ankle.
They both looked down, it was the wolf man that had recovered. Before Bernice could use her other leg to kick his face, he pulled her leg from under her and she fell to the ground.
Sabine fisted a handful of her pixie dust and was about to spray him when he bolted upright with Bernice in front of him.
He was holding the same knife that Sabine had lodged into his chest, against her throat.
"Try that again and I'll slit her throat before the powder reaches me," he threatened.
"Let her go," Sabine told him.
"If I don't, what will you do? Sprinkle me with your dust or assault me with your pan?" He mocked.
She swallowed thickly; her throat felt dry. She could see the fear in Bernice's eyes as the blade was pressed so tight against her throat that it had nicked her skin. A drop of blood flowed down from the small cut.
"Please, we can talk this out," Sabine pleaded.
She started forward, taking one step at a time as she noticed the man was gradually moving himself and Bernice towards the open part of her house.
"Now you want to talk after you assaulted me with your knife. Nearly blinded me with your salt, and banged my head to the stars with your pan," he muttered.
"I will make up for it, whatever Zipporah is paying you. I will double it," she begged.
They were now at the edge of the house, he still held Bernice against him upfront, while he had his back to the open entrance.
"Too late woman, perhaps another time," he said. With an incredible speed, he flung the knife away, clutched Bernice to himself, and started to fall backward.
She quickly lounged to grab Bernice but only succeeded in grabbing her jacket. The material was ripped off her body as it could not suspend her weight.
"No!" Sabine screamed.
Down below, she saw the werewolf spin in the air and land on his two feet like a cat, holding Bernice in his arms.
Just then, she saw his other companions decapitate the remaining two beetles.
Like a spoiled queen, she saw Zipporah emerge from her safe cover in the trees and draw close to where the man held Bernice.
She took one look at Bernice and frowned "I told you to get the halfling not the nymph. Get her," she pointed to Sabine who was watching from above, ''Not her!" She pointed to Bernice.
In that moment, Sabine locked eyes with Bernice and her lips moved in a silent warning.
"Run."
