The heart weighs heaviest when in love
Trista’s pov
The wailing of sirens cut through the heavy night air, their piercing sound barely registering in
my ears as i knelt down beside Leonard’s unconscious body. My hands were trembling so bad
as I pressed them against his chest, my fingers grazing the fabric of his shirt, that is now damp
with blood.
“Stay with me please” I whispered, my voice cracking.
m, don’t you dare!.”
“Please, Leonard, don’t you dare leave
I barely noticed that people were already gathering around us.
The wail of sirens cut through the air this time the sound got closer, the flashing red and blue
lights bouncing off the wet pavement as the ambulance pulled up with a screech. The scent of
burning rubber and blood clung to the atmosphere, making my stomach twist with nausea.
My hands were still trembling as i cradled Leonard’s face, my breath coming out in short,
panicked gasps. His blood smeared across my fingers, warm and sticky, a cruel reminder of
what had just happened minutes ago. His body was motionless, his usually intense eyes
fluttering weakly as if he were struggling to hold onto consciousness.
“Stay with me, Leo, please,
” i pleaded, brushing his damp hair away from his forehead.
just hold on. Help is here.”

The paramedics rushed toward them, their voices clipped and efficient as they assessed
Leonard’s condition. One of them gently pulled Trista back, but she resisted, gripping his shirt as
if letting go meant losing him forever.
“You need to give us space, ma’am.
”
“No, I—
” my voice broke unable to get out the complete words.
Leonard’s fingers twitched slightly, his lips parting to speak, but only a choked gasp escaped.
His pain was evident, his body growing colder beneath my touch.
“We’re losing him! Get the stretcher now!” one of the paramedics shouted.
I stumbled back, my legs feeling weak as i watched them carefully lift Leonard onto the
stretcher. An oxygen mask was placed over his face, and an IV was quickly inserted into his
arm. The sight of it made me dizzy with fear, I have never been so afraid in my life.
“Are you riding with him?” one of the medics asked.
“Yes!” I blurted out without hesitation.
I climbed into the ambulance immediately, my hands clutching Leonard’s arm as they sped
toward the hospital. Every bump in the road sent a fresh wave of terror through her. The
beeping of the heart monitor echoed loudly in the small space, each sound a painful reminder
that his life was hanging now by a thread.
“Leonard, baby, you can’t leave me,
” i whispered in a low voice, pressing a soft kiss to his
knuckles.
“Not now. Not ever.
”
His eyes flickered open briefly, just enough for me to see the raw pain in them. His lips moved
slightly, forming words that I could barely hear over the blaring sirens.
“I—won’t…
” he rasped, his grip tightening around my fingers for a fleeting moment before his
body went still again.
Tears burned down my cheeks as I pressed his hand against my chest, silently begging the
universe not to take him from me.
I don’t think I would be able to beat it.
But the fear in my heart was relentless.
Would he survive this?
And if he did… would things ever be the same again between us?
The paramedics rushed toward us again, their voices blending together in a frenzy of medical
jargon.
“We have a pulse but it’s weak,
” one of them said, kneeling beside Leonard and immediately
checking his vitals.
“We need to move him now.
”
I felt herself being gently pushed aside, but i fought tyem, gripping onto Leonard’s wrist as if
letting go meant losing him forever.
“Ma’am, you need to step back,
” one of the medics urged.
“No,
” she shook her head, tears clouding her vision.
“I’m coming with him.
”
The paramedic hesitated for a brief moment before nodding.
“Fine, but let us do our job.
”
They carefully lifted Leonard onto the stretcher, securing an oxygen mask over his face. I
proceeded to climb into the ambulance without a second thought, gripping his hand as the doors
slammed shut behind us.
The vehicle lurched forward, sirens blaring, but all i could focus on was the rhythmic beep of the
heart monitor—steady but faint.
I leaned closer, her voice barely above a whisper.
fight. You hear me?” A tear slipped down my cheek, landing on his hand.

”
“You saved me, Leonard. Now I need you to
“I never got to tell
My voice broke. I swallowed hard.
The medic adjusted the IV, glancing at me sympathetically.
“Sometimes, they can hear you.
”
“Talk to him,
” he said softly.
That was all I needed to hear.
I inhaled sharply, gripping Leonard’s hand tighter.
“I can’t lose you again,
” I murmured.
“Not like this.
”
Not ever.
As the ambulance sped through the city streets, i barely noticed anything else, neither did I pay
attention to anything’s else. The world outside blurred, but in that small space, all I could do was
to pray for Leonard .
The sterile scent of antiseptic burned my nose as I sat in the hospital waiting area, my fingers
digging into my palms. My body trembled—not from the cold air conditioning, but from the
suffocating weight pressing against my chest.
Leonard.
His name was a silent scream in my head, an echo that wouldn’t stop haunting me.
I could still hear the sickening screech of tires, the violent crash, the shattering of glass. It
played on Like an endless loop in my mind, tormenting me with every passing second. My
breath hitched as I squeezed my eyes shut, but it only made the memories sharper.
One moment, he had been there—right in front of me.
The next…
Blood.
So much blood.
“Miss Caldwell?”
My head snapped up, my heart slamming into my ribs at the sound of my name. A doctor stood
in front of me, his expression carefully neutral. Too neutral. My stomach twisted.
I shot up from the chair, nearly stumbling.
“Is he—
” My voice cracked, my throat raw.
“Is Leonard
okay?”
The doctor exhaled, flipping through his clipboard.
“He sustained severe injuries—two fractured
ribs, a concussion, and internal bleeding. We had to operate immediately.
”
The room spun. My knees wobbled, but I forced myself to stay upright.
I needed to be strong for him.
“But he’s alive right?” I whispered, asking the most important question.
“Yes,
” the doctor confirmed, but his face remained grave.
“For now.
”
For now.
The words sliced through me like a dagger.
I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to contain the panic surging through me.
This was my fault.
Entirely mine.
Leonard had been saving me.
The memory crashed over me again—his body colliding with tge vehicle the sheer force sending
him sprawling onto the pavement. The blinding headlights. The way he twisted at the last
second to push me away.
He saved me then he took the full impact of the car.
For me.
Just for me.
I didn’t know how to feeel about that.
A strangled sob clawed up my throat, but I swallowed it down. I couldn’t break. Not here.
“Can I see him?” I choked out.
The doctor hesitated before nodding.
“He’s still unconscious, but you can sit with him.
”
I didn’t wait.
I moved down the hallway like a ghost, my body moving but my mind completely disconnected. I
didn’t deserve to be here.
Not when Leonard was fighting for his life because of me.
When I stepped into the room, my breath caught in my throat.
He looked… broken.
His strong, powerful frame now fragile against the hospital bed. Bandages covered his
forehead, his cheekbone was bruised, and an IV was taped to his hand. The steady beeping of
machines was the only sign that he was still here—that he was still breathing.
I lowered myself onto the chair beside him, my fingers hovering over his but too afraid to touch.
My chest ached as I whispered,
“Why did you do that, Leo, why did you try to take my place?”
Silence.
I bit my lip hard, my vision blurring.
“You shouldn’t have saved me,
” I continued, my voice trembling.
life for me. Not after everything I said to you.
”
“You shouldn’t have risked your
But he had.
Because that’s who Leonard Devereaux was.
Even after years of long distance without communication. Even after the heartbreak, the
betrayals, the regrets… he had still chosen me.
I reached out, my fingers barely grazing his hand. His skin was warm, but he didn’t stir.
A fresh wave of guilt choked me.
I had spent so long running from him, from us, telling myself that he didn’t matter anymore.
But as I sat there, listening to the fragile rhythm of his breathing, I realized something that shook
me to my core.
He did.
More than I had ever admitted.
And now, I might lose him.
I can’t lose Leonard.
A soft knock at the door startled me.
I turned, expecting a nurse.
But it wasn’t a nurse.
instead It was Chad.
He was dressed in a perfectly pressed suit, his dark eyes swept over me before flickering to
Leonard’s unconscious form. His expression was unreadable, but something about it made the
hairs on my arms rise.
“You look like hell,
” he murmured, stepping inside.
I stiffened.
“What are you doing here?”
He shrugged, shoving his hands into his pockets.
“I heard about the accident. Thought I’d check
in.
”
There was something in his tone—something too casual, too calculated.
I narrowed my eyes.
“You’re lying.
”
His lips twitched, but he didn’t deny it. Instead, he took a slow step forward, his gaze dropping to
Leonard’s motionless body.
“He looks bad,
” Chad mused.
“Almost like he might not wake up.
”
My blood turned to ice.
I shot up from my chair, my pulse thundering.
“What the hell are you trying to say, Chad?”
He tilted his head, studying me.
happens next.
”
“I’m saying, Trista… you should start thinking about what would
A chill crawled down my spine.
“What happens next?” I echoed.
His gaze darkened.
“Leonard might out of the picture soon.
”
My stomach twisted.
“Don’t.
”
He took another step closer.
“It’s just you and me now.
”
I swallowed hard, my heart hammering against my ribs. Something about his words felt final.
Maybe I am just hallucinating.
My fingers curled into fists as I forced my voice to steady.
“You think this changes anything?” I
whispered.
Chad’s expression was still unreadable,
“Oh, sweetheart. I think this changes everything.
”
A sharp knock interrupted the tension.
A nurse poked her head in.
“Miss Caldwell, the doctor needs to speak with you.
”
I turned, my throat dry.
“About what?”
She hesitated.
“It’s… urgent.
”
Panic slammed into me.
I shot Chad a final glare before brushing past him, following the nurse into the hallway. My legs
felt like lead, my breath shallow.
Please, no.
Not Leonard.
I turned the corner—and froze.
A group of doctors stood outside Leonard’s room, their expressions grim.
One of them turned to me, his face heavy with something I couldn’t place.
“Miss Caldwell,
” he started carefully,
“there’s been a complication.
”
The world tilted.
I grabbed the wall for support, my heart in my throat.
“What do you mean?”
The doctor exhaled.
“He’s in critical condition. We need to prepare for the worst.
”
The words slammed into me like a sledgehammer.
Prepare for the worst.
No.
Not Leonard.
Not like this.
Tears welled in my eyes as I clutched my stomach, shaking my head.
This wasn’t supposed to happen.
I wasn’t supposed to care this much.
But as the weight of reality settled over me, I realized the truth.
I couldn’t lose him.
Not now.
Not ever.
And I would do whatever it took to make sure he came back to me.
