Chapter 51 Chapter 51
The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the weight of quiet.
Not the peaceful kind—the kind that presses against your chest and makes you aware of every thought you’ve been avoiding.
I lay still, staring at the ceiling, replaying last night over and over. The dinner. Adrian’s hand brushing mine. The way my heart had reacted before my mind could catch up.
This was supposed to be a contract.
A strategy.
A shield.
So why did it feel like something fragile was forming beneath all that steel?
I pushed myself out of bed and dressed slowly, choosing neutral colors, armor disguised as elegance. By the time I stepped into the living area, Adrian was already there, jacket on, phone in hand.
He looked up when he saw me.
“Morning,” he said.
“Morning.”
A pause settled between us—not awkward, but careful. Like we were both measuring how much last night had changed.
“We have a lunch today,” he said, slipping his phone into his pocket. “Investors. Old friends. Daniel will hear about it.”
Of course he would.
“Do I need to play a role?” I asked.
Adrian shook his head. “Just be yourself.”
I gave him a look. “You realize that’s the most dangerous option.”
A corner of his mouth lifted. “Exactly.”
The lunch was held at a private club—quiet, expensive, and filled with people who spoke in half-truths and smiles. Adrian stayed close without hovering. He introduced me simply.
“This is Elena.”
No titles. No labels.
And yet, the way his hand rested lightly at my back said everything.
I felt eyes on us more than once. Curious. Calculating. I could almost hear the whispers forming already.
Adrian leaned closer, his voice low. “You’re doing fine.”
“I’m not doing anything,” I murmured.
“Sometimes that’s enough.”
Halfway through lunch, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
I didn’t answer.
A second message followed almost immediately.
Daniel: We need to talk.
My stomach tightened.
Adrian noticed the shift instantly. “Him?”
I nodded.
He didn’t look surprised. “He’ll escalate.”
“I know.”
“Do you want me to handle it?”
I met his eyes. “No. Not yet.”
Something unreadable crossed his face, but he nodded. “Your call.”
On the way back, the car was quiet again. Not uncomfortable. Just… full.
“Elena,” Adrian said suddenly, “there’s something you should know.”
I turned toward him.
“Once we make the engagement public,” he continued, “there’s no half-step back. People will dig. They’ll speculate. They’ll test you.”
“I’ve been tested before,” I said softly.
“Yes,” he agreed. “But this time, you won’t be alone.”
The sincerity in his voice made my throat tighten.
Back at the penthouse, I kicked off my shoes and leaned against the counter, exhausted in a way sleep wouldn’t fix.
“Why are you doing this?” I asked suddenly.
Adrian turned. “Doing what?”
“Standing by me. Protecting me. Letting this become… complicated.”
He didn’t answer right away.
“Because,” he said finally, “some things stop being about winning.”
My heart skipped.
Before I could respond, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and frowned. “I have to take this.”
I watched him step away, watched the way his shoulders stiffened as he listened.
“Yes… I understand… no, keep it quiet for now.”
He ended the call and turned back to me.
“That was my head of security,” he said. “Someone’s been asking questions about you.”
My pulse quickened. “Who?”
“We don’t know yet.”
A chill crept up my spine.
Adrian’s gaze sharpened, protective and calculating all at once. “This is where things change.”
“How?”
“Because whoever it is,” he said quietly, “isn’t just watching Daniel anymore.”
He stepped closer, his voice dropping. “They’re watching us.”
And in that moment, I realized something with startling clarity—
Revenge had brought us together.
But something else was pulling us forward.
And whatever it was…
It wasn’t done with us yet.
