THE FINAL DANCE
THE FINAL DANCE
AYLA'S POV
I walk into the cave alone. My feet don’t hesitate. They move, step by step, dragging me forward into the darkness. Garrick and the others try to stop me. They always try to stop me.
“Ayla, don’t do this,” Garrick says, his voice rough with concern. I don’t even turn to look at him. I can’t afford to.
“I have to,” I answer, voice firm but breaking a little at the edges. It’s not the first time I’ve had to say those words, but it feels like the hardest. I swallow the lump in my throat, feeling the weight of the silence behind me. “If he’s still in there, he’ll listen to me. And if he’s not... then I’ll end it.”
The words hit me harder than I expected, but I don’t let them show. No one says anything else, and I don’t turn back. I can’t. Not now.
The further I walk, the colder the air gets, until my breath comes out in shaky clouds. This place is cursed. I can feel it. The walls seem to press in, like they’re trying to crush the life out of me, but I push through.
This is it.
I stop in the center of the cave, the air thick with something I can’t name. There’s no sound except the pulse of my own heartbeat. Then, a low laugh. I freeze.
“I wondered when you’d show up, little wolf.” Thane’s voice. It’s not his voice. Not really. It’s too sharp, too empty. The words drip with something dark. The air seems to get heavier with every breath I take. “You really think you’re the one who’s going to stop me? How cute. How... brave. I am older than your ancestors put together… more powerful too. What do you think you can do to me?”
His footsteps echo around me, each step a mockery. I keep my eyes fixed on the shadows, trying to ignore the knot in my stomach. I won’t flinch. I can’t.
“I’m not here to stop you,” I say, my voice rough but steady. “I’m here to save you.”
The laughter dies, replaced by a low growl. He steps forward into the dim light, his eyes black as coal, empty. He doesn’t look like Thane. Not really. But there’s a flicker in the way his shoulders tense, the way his jaw clenches, that makes my heart ache.
“Oh, you think he is still in here? Think he is just some... lost little boy who needs his mommy?” He circles me, slow, deliberate. “I know your every weakness, Ayla. Every single fear. All those things you hate about yourself. I’ve been waiting to tear them apart. Piece by piece.”
He’s right. He knows me. He knows the pain, the doubt. The times I wanted to run, to hide, to break. He knows it all. But I can’t let him have that power over me anymore.
I lift my chin, meeting his eyes, and I refuse to back down. “You’re wrong,” I say, my voice softer now, but no less sure. “You’re wrong if you think you know everything about me. You don’t know what it’s like to love. You don’t know what it’s like to be loved. But Thane did. And he still does.”
His face flickers. Just for a second. Just long enough to make me catch my breath. But it’s gone before I can even blink.
He laughs again, cold and empty. “Love? That’s what you think you have? Love won’t save you, Ayla. It never will.”
“I don’t need saving.” I take a step forward, my voice breaking through the darkness. “I need you. The real you. The one who laughed with me, who held me when everything was falling apart. The one who told me you’d always fight for me. You remember that, don’t you?”
He pauses, his breath coming in ragged gasps. For a moment, I see it. The flicker of Thane. The real Thane. My Thane.
His voice cracks as he speaks, softer now. “Ayla... you have to end this. Please. It’ll consume you too... I won’t be able to stop it...”
Tears sting my eyes, but I don’t let them fall. I can’t. Not now. “I’m not giving up on you, Thane. I won’t.”
I can feel the mark on my wrist heating, a slow burn that spreads like wildfire through my veins. It’s burning me, but I don’t care. I’m not backing down. Not now. Not ever.
“I’ll do it if I have to,” I whisper, barely audible, as I reach up and swipe at the tears threatening to fall. “I’ll do it for you.”
For a heartbeat, everything is still. Then, he lunges.
It happens so fast. One moment, he’s there, eyes empty and wild, and the next, his hands are around my throat.
It’s not Thane. It’s the spirit, the thing that’s taken him. The thing that’s breaking him down from the inside. My vision goes blurry, the edges of everything starting to darken. His grip tightens, cutting off my air. My heart races, panic clawing at me.
But I can’t die like this. Not like this.
I gather every ounce of strength I have left, pushing against his chest, trying to get a breath, trying to speak.
“You fight for me,” I gasp, my voice barely audible. “I’ll fight for you. You hear me? I’ll fight for you!”
Something shifts. For a second, just a moment, I feel his grip loosen. I feel the real Thane fighting back.
Then, just as quickly, the spirit snaps forward again, a growl building in his chest as the cold black eyes fixate on me. I throw all my weight forward, my claws extended, and—
A rush of heat.
The mark on my wrist flares, searing into my skin like it’s pulling the life out of me. My power starts to flicker, dying out like a lightbulb running out of juice.
No... no, no, no...
I can’t breathe. My vision starts to swim. The pain is unbearable. Everything is fading.
Thane looks at me, eyes wide, full of horror as the spirit overtakes him again. His voice is a ragged scream. “Ayla—Ayla, I’m sorry, I can’t—I can’t—”
I don’t hear him. I can’t hear anything over the pounding in my ears.
And then he’s coming at me again.
Everything inside me goes cold. My powers are gone. The mark is burning out. There’s nothing left to stop him.
I’m too weak.
I’m too weak.
But I won’t stop.
I won’t let him g

I look up…. Just in time to see his claws raised one more time, coming for me…
