THE THREEFOLD PATH

THE THREEFOLD PATH
THANE'S POV

The forest is too damn quiet.

Like it's holding its breath, waiting to see which one of us breaks first.

I stand at the edge of Hollow Grove, staring into the place I never thought I would step foot in. The trees here aren’t like the ones outside, these ones lean too close, their branches curled like fingers. It’s darker, too. Not because of the time of day, but because the place itself seems to swallow light. Like it doesn’t want anyone to see what happens inside.

I don’t blame it.

Behind me, the tension is thick enough to choke on. Zane, the rogue leader, cracks his neck like he’s about to walk into a boxing ring while Garreth’s standing real still, like he’s trying to calm the war going on in his own head. Me? I’m just breathing. Or at least, trying to.

Ayla’s standing off to the side, arms crossed, eyes locked on mine like she’s scared I’ll vanish if she blinks. Her lips press into a thin line when I glance back.

“Hey,” I say quietly, stepping toward her. “I’m coming back.”

“You better.” Her voice cracks. “Don’t do that hero thing. Don’t try to-”

“I’m not.” I stop her, catching her hand. “This isn’t about proving something. Not anymore.”

She swallows. “I know. I just… I don’t want you coming back different. Or broken.”

I don’t tell her that’s exactly what this trial is meant to do, break us down. That’s what Hollow Grove is for. It makes legends by first shattering the man.

“I’ll still be me.” I pause. “I’ll still be yours.”

Her eyes soften just a bit. She doesn’t say anything, just squeezes my hand like she’s trying to etch the feeling into her skin.

The Elders don’t give us a speech. No ceremony. Just a nod. The forest doesn’t need permission to test us. We walk in, one by one, and the world changes the second the trees close around us.

Phase One: Strength

The air goes cold. Like actual cold, not the dramatic kind, my breath turns white in the air. I blink and realize I’m not in the forest anymore.

I’m in my old pack house.

Except everything’s burned. Charred walls. Ash falling like snow. The smell of smoke and blood fills my nose.

And then I see him-

Me.

He steps out from the ruined hallway, same face, same scar, but his eyes are empty. Like all the light got sucked out. His mouth twists up into something cruel.

“You failed them,” he says.

I swallow.

“You ran. You left them with her. You let your father die.”

“I didn’t leave. I came back.”

“But too late,” he sneers. “Always too late. That’s your story, isn’t it? The Alpha who couldn’t save anyone.”

I lunge.

It’s not a fair fight. He moves like me, thinks like me. Every punch I throw, he dodges. Every hit I take feels worse because it’s coming from my own hands.

“You think you can lead them?” he growls, slamming me into the wall. “You think a wolf like you deserves a pack?”

I snap.

My fist hits his face. Again. And again. Blood splatters. He laughs through it.

Then I do the only thing I haven’t tried.

I stop fighting.

“I know what I did,” I say, breathing hard. “I know I messed up. But I’m not that guy anymore.”

He freezes.

“I’m not trying to prove anything to you. I’m doing this for them. For her. For me.”

He tilts his head.

Then he smiles.

And disappears.

The world twists again. The cold fades. I fall to my knees on dirt. Real forest. The next phase is waiting.

Phase Two: Wisdom

There’s a ring of stones around me now. They glow faintly, like they’ve been watching this place for a long time. In the center, a little fire burns.

Three illusions appear at once.

My father. Ayla. My pack.

They’re all in danger. All screaming.

I can only save one.

I freeze. My heart pounds. This isn’t fair.

Ayla’s voice is the loudest. I take a step toward her—

But then I stop.

It’s not real.

None of it is.

I close my eyes, clench my fists. “You’re not going to make me choose between the people I love. That’s not wisdom. That’s cruelty.”

The fire flares.

The illusions vanish.

A whisper brushes my ear.

Correct.

Then the trees shift again. I’m breathing hard, heart still racing. But I made it. I’m still here.

Only two of us remain.

Garreth never came out of the ring.

Figures.

Phase Three: Loyalty

Zane and I stand in the final circle.

There’s silence. Then the voice returns, deep and rumbling, like it comes from the earth itself.

“One of you may walk away. Choose now. The other must face the blade.”

But there is no blade.

Just pressure. Like the forest itself is waiting.

Zane shifts first, baring his teeth. “I’m not stepping down. You want to be Alpha, you fight for it.”

I step forward.

But I don’t shift.

“I’m not killing you,” I say quietly.

He hesitates.

“You want a pack? Build your own. Mine’s already bleeding. They don’t need another war.”

Zane stares at me.

Then something in his eyes changes. Maybe it’s guilt. Maybe it’s respect.

Or probably shame.

Either way, he doesn’t say anything. Just nods, and walks away.

The ground rumbles.

And the forest whispers: You have passed.

I fall to my knees.

Not from pain.

From relief.

I walk out of Hollow Grove with blood on my knuckles and ash in my lungs.

Ayla’s the first one to run to me. Her hands grab my face, checking me like she can’t believe I’m whole.

I lean into her touch.

“I told you I’d come back.”

She doesn’t speak. Just pulls me into a hug and doesn’t let go.

The pack watches from a distance. No one speaks yet. Not until the Elders step forward.

One of them raises his chin.

“You’ve passed the Threefol
d Path. You are Alpha.”

I look at Ayla.

Then at the crowd.

And for the first time in a long time, I let myself feel it. I am home.

I am Alpha. But this is just the beginning.
