Breaking the Chains

The cold metal walls seemed to close in as Nerina paced her cell. The weight of the rebellion pressed down on her shoulders, but she refused to let it break her. She had come too far, sacrificed too much, to let fear dictate her actions now. The Threads were counting on her, and she wouldn’t fail them.

A faint tapping on the wall interrupted her thoughts. She rushed to press her ear against the cold surface.

"Midnight. West corridor," the voice whispered. It was Caleb.

Her heart pounded in anticipation. The plan was finally in motion.

The night stretched on, each second dragging as Nerina waited for the appointed hour. When the time came, she slipped silently through the dimly lit corridors, her every step careful and measured. The guards patrolled in pairs, their boots echoing ominously. She ducked into the shadows, holding her breath as they passed.

Reaching the west corridor, she found Caleb waiting. His expression was tense but determined.

"We don't have much time," he murmured, handing her a small key. "This unlocks the northern gate. Once you’re through, head straight to the rendezvous point. The Threads will be waiting."

She nodded, gripping the key tightly. "And you?"

"I have my own part to play," Caleb replied. "Just get out of here."

A noise from down the hall sent them both into motion. Caleb melted into the darkness while Nerina hurried toward the northern gate. She moved swiftly, avoiding detection, her heart hammering as she slid the key into the lock. The mechanism clicked, and the gate swung open with a soft creak.

Freedom lay beyond.

She slipped through, running toward the meeting point. The cool night air hit her face as she emerged into the open. For the first time in what felt like forever, she breathed deeply, the scent of damp earth and fresh air filling her lungs.

A figure stepped from the shadows ahead.

Lucian.

Her blood turned to ice.

"Going somewhere, Nerina?" His voice was calm, almost amused.

She clenched her fists, refusing to show fear. "You won’t stop me."

Lucian tilted his head, watching her with unsettling ease. "You’ve become quite the thorn in my side. But did you really think you could escape without consequences?"

She braced herself, preparing for the fight of her life.

The rebellion’s fate—and her own—hung in the balance.

Nerina knew she couldn’t afford hesitation. Every muscle in her body tensed as she gauged the distance between them. Lucian was blocking her only path forward, and she didn’t have the luxury of retreat.

She took a slow step back, her eyes darting around for another route. "I don’t have time for this, Lucian. Move."

He smirked. "I’d love to oblige, but you see, the Warden wouldn’t be pleased if I just let his favorite prisoner walk away. And I have a reputation to uphold."

"You’re a coward hiding behind orders," she snapped.

His expression darkened. "Careful, Nerina. I might take that personally."

With a swift motion, he drew his blade.

Nerina lunged first. She knew she couldn’t overpower him in strength, but she was fast. She sidestepped as he slashed at her, the blade whistling past her ear. Pivoting, she aimed a kick at his ribs. He blocked it easily, shoving her backward.

She hit the ground hard, pain jolting through her arms. Lucian advanced, but she rolled away just in time, grabbing a discarded metal pipe from the ground. She swung it in a wide arc, forcing him to jump back.

"Not bad," he admitted, flexing his fingers. "But not good enough."

Nerina barely had time to react before he was on her again. She blocked his attack with the pipe, the impact reverberating through her bones. He was stronger, but she refused to go down easily.

Every second she kept him occupied meant the Threads had more time. Caleb had set everything up perfectly—she just had to break through.

Lucian feinted left before striking right. The blade nicked her shoulder, drawing blood. She hissed in pain, but used the moment to bring the pipe up, catching him across the side. He staggered, cursing.

That was her chance.

She sprinted past him, ignoring the searing pain in her arm. The rendezvous point wasn’t far now. She could already see the faint flicker of lights in the distance, her allies waiting.

Lucian recovered fast. Too fast.

Before she could reach the clearing, a sharp force slammed into her from behind. She crashed to the ground, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs. Lucian pinned her down, pressing his blade to her throat.

"You never learn," he whispered. "You should’ve stayed put."

She glared up at him. "And you should’ve known better than to underestimate me."

With her free hand, she reached into her sleeve and pulled out the small, jagged piece of glass she had taken from her cell days ago. Before Lucian could react, she drove it into his arm.

He howled in pain, his grip loosening just enough for her to throw him off. She rolled away, gasping, and scrambled to her feet. Blood dripped down her arm, but she couldn’t stop now.

Lucian staggered, clutching his wound. "You—"

A sudden explosion rocked the ground beneath them. Smoke filled the air as fire erupted from the main gates of the prison. The Threads had begun their final assault.

Lucian’s expression flickered between rage and something close to admiration. "They actually did it."

Nerina didn’t wait to see what he would do next. She ran.

Through the smoke, through the chaos, toward freedom.

And for the first time in years, she felt hope ignite within her.
