The labyrinth quakes around us, each rumble shaking the very ground beneath our feet. Caleb and I race through the crumbling corridors, the air thick with dust and the lingering echoes of energy from the collapsed core. Every step feels heavier, every breath more strained as the weight of what we’ve done presses down on us.
“We have to keep moving,” Caleb says, his voice urgent but steady. His hand grips mine tightly, grounding me amidst the chaos. “The exit can’t be far.”
I nod, though my legs scream in protest, exhaustion threatening to pull me under. The shard in my pocket feels like dead weight, its once-blinding light now reduced to a faint, sporadic flicker. The silence of the core’s absence is deafening, as though the labyrinth mourns its loss.
As we round a final corner, the corridor widens into a cavernous chamber. The sight before us stops us in our tracks. Lucian stands in the center, his figure shadowed by the dim light filtering through the cracks in the ceiling. His armor is cracked, his posture hunched, but the fury in his eyes burns as fiercely as ever.
“You think it’s over?” he snarls, his voice a low growl that reverberates through the chamber. “You think you can destroy what I built and just walk away?”
Caleb moves in front of me, his blade raised. “Step aside, Lucian,” he commands, his tone unwavering. “This ends now.”
Lucian’s laughter is hollow, bitter. “Ends? Oh no. This is just the beginning. You’ve unleashed something far greater than you understand.” He steps forward, the light catching the sharp angles of his face. “Do you even realize what you’ve done?”
“We stopped you,” I say, my voice firm despite the tremor in my hands. “The core’s power was destroying you, consuming everyone around you. It had to end.”
“And now everything will collapse,” Lucian retorts, his gaze flicking between Caleb and me. “You’ve doomed us all. The labyrinth—the power it held—it was the only thing keeping this place alive. Without it, there is nothing but ruin.”
I falter, his words striking a chord of doubt deep within me. Caleb glances back at me, his expression resolute. “Don’t listen to him,” he says. “He’s desperate. He knows he’s lost.”
Lucian’s sneer deepens. “Lost?” he echoes. “You think this is about me? No. This is about her.” His eyes lock onto mine, piercing and unrelenting. “You felt it, didn’t you? The core’s power. It’s still inside you. You can’t escape it. It will consume you, just as it did me.”
I shake my head, my fingers brushing against the shard in my pocket. “I’m not like you,” I say, my voice firm. “I won’t let it control me.”
Lucian’s expression darkens, and the ground trembles beneath us. “Then prove it,” he growls. “If you truly believe you’re different, show me. Face me.”
Before I can respond, Lucian lunges. Caleb meets him head-on, their blades clashing in a shower of sparks. The sound echoes through the chamber, drowning out the rumble of the collapsing labyrinth. I step back, my heart pounding as I watch them fight, each strike filled with raw fury and desperation.
“Nerina!” Caleb shouts, his voice sharp. “Get out of here! Now!”
“I’m not leaving you!” I yell back, my hands trembling as I grip the shard. Its faint light pulses weakly, as though it’s urging me to act.
Summoning every ounce of courage I have, I step forward. Caleb and Lucian are locked in a brutal struggle, their movements a blur of steel and determination. Lucian’s strength is waning, his attacks growing more erratic, but his resolve remains unbroken.
“This is your last chance,” I say, my voice steady despite the chaos around me. “Surrender, Lucian. End this before it’s too late.”
Lucian’s gaze snaps to me, his eyes blazing. “You think you can command me?” he snarls. “You are nothing. A pretender wielding power you barely comprehend.”
“Maybe,” I admit, stepping closer. “But I’m not alone. And that’s why you’ll lose.”
The shard in my hand flares to life, its light blinding as it pulses with renewed energy. Lucian stumbles, his expression flickering with fear as the shard’s power envelops him.
“What are you doing?” he demands, his voice cracking.
“Ending this,” I say, pouring every ounce of my will into the shard. The light intensifies, and Lucian lets out a guttural scream as the energy engulfs him. The ground beneath him cracks, and the chamber trembles violently.
Caleb pulls me back, his arms steady around me as we watch Lucian fall to his knees. The fire in his eyes dims, replaced by a hollow emptiness. For a moment, he looks almost human.
“It’s over,” Caleb says, his voice soft but resolute.
Lucian slumps forward, his body still as the shard’s light fades. The chamber falls silent, save for the faint rumble of the labyrinth’s collapse. I release a shaky breath, my body trembling from the effort.
“We have to go,” Caleb says, his hand tightening around mine. “This place won’t hold much longer.”
I nod, my legs barely carrying me as we make our way to the exit. The corridors blur together, the air growing fresher with each step. When we finally emerge into the open, the sight of the sky takes my breath away.
The ruins of the labyrinth stretch behind us, its once-imposing structure crumbling into dust. The morning light bathes the landscape in golden hues, a stark contrast to the darkness we’ve left behind.
Caleb collapses beside me, his chest heaving as he stares at the horizon. “It’s done,” he says, his voice filled with disbelief.
I nod, tears streaming down my face as the weight of our journey settles over me. “We’re free.”
Together, we sit in silence, the warmth of the sun on our faces a reminder that we’ve survived. The fight is over, but the scars remain. Rebuilding will take time, but for the first time in what feels like an eternity, I feel hope.
