Lucian’s Bargain
The air around the core crackles with residual energy, its glow subdued but steady. Caleb and I stand at its base, our breaths shallow and labored from the fight with the guardians. The room feels empty now, devoid of the oppressive malice that had filled it before. But the stillness doesn’t last long.
A deep, resonant voice echoes through the chamber.
“You’ve come far,” Lucian says, his tone both mocking and impressed. “Farther than I anticipated.”
Caleb’s grip tightens on his blade, his body going rigid as Lucian steps into the light. He looks as composed and menacing as ever, his dark eyes gleaming with a predatory glint. Despite the wear on his face, he radiates power, the core’s light reflecting off the sharp angles of his armor.
“But you should have known,” he continues, his gaze shifting between us, “that this would end here. You’ve weakened the core, yes, but you haven’t destroyed it. And without the core, neither of you will leave this labyrinth alive.”
I step forward, the shard still warm in my hand. “You’re wrong,” I say, my voice steady despite the fear bubbling beneath the surface. “We’ve seen what the core has done to you, what it’s taken from everyone trapped here. It ends today, Lucian.”
Lucian’s lips curl into a cold smile. “Bold words from someone who doesn’t understand the power she wields.” He takes a step closer, and the energy in the room shifts, pressing down on me like a physical force.
“Tell me,” he says, his voice softer now, almost persuasive. “Do you think you’re strong enough to handle what comes next? The core is no ordinary artifact. Its power is ancient, beyond comprehension. And it will take everything from you, just as it did from me.”
I falter, his words striking a chord of doubt. Caleb moves to my side, his presence grounding me. “Don’t listen to him,” he says firmly. “He’s trying to break you.”
Lucian’s gaze shifts to Caleb, a flicker of disdain crossing his face. “Ah, the loyal protector. How noble. But tell me, Caleb, are you prepared to watch her die? Because that’s what will happen if she continues.”
“Stop,” I snap, my voice firm. “You don’t get to twist this. You made your choices, Lucian. Choices that hurt countless people. And now you’re afraid because you know we’ll succeed where you failed.”
His smile fades, replaced by a cold intensity. “You think you’re different from me? That you won’t succumb to the core’s influence? The moment you touched that shard, you became part of it. Its power is already working its way through you.”
I glance at the shard in my hand, its faint glow pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat. A chill runs through me, but I push the doubt aside. “I’ll handle it,” I say. “Because I’m not alone.”
Lucian tilts his head, his expression unreadable. “You truly believe that?” he asks, his tone almost curious. “Then prove it. Let’s see how far you’re willing to go for this so-called freedom.”
With a flick of his wrist, the energy in the room shifts again, and Caleb is suddenly yanked backward by an invisible force. He slams into the wall, his blade clattering to the ground as chains of light bind him in place. He struggles, his eyes wide with alarm.
“Nerina!” he shouts, his voice echoing through the chamber.
“Let him go!” I scream, stepping toward Lucian. The shard in my hand flares with heat, reacting to my anger.
Lucian smirks. “I will. But only if you make a choice.” He gestures toward the core, its light intensifying. “Surrender yourself to the core, and I’ll release him. You can take my place, bear its burden, and free everyone trapped here. Or… you can keep fighting, and he dies. The choice is yours.”
My breath catches, the weight of his words crashing down on me. The core’s glow seems to grow stronger, pulling at me like a siren’s call. I glance at Caleb, his face contorted with pain and desperation.
“Don’t,” he says, his voice strained. “Don’t listen to him, Nerina. We can end this together.”
Lucian steps closer, his presence overwhelming. “He doesn’t understand,” he says, his tone almost pitying. “But you do. You’ve felt the core’s power. You know it’s the only way.”
My mind races, torn between fear and resolve. The core’s energy hums louder, and the shard burns in my hand, as if urging me to act. Caleb’s eyes meet mine, filled with trust and determination. He believes in me, even now.
I take a deep breath, steadying myself. “You’re wrong, Lucian,” I say, my voice steady. “There is another way.”
He narrows his eyes, confusion flickering across his face. “What are you—”
Before he can finish, I thrust the shard toward the core. Its light flares, and a wave of energy erupts, knocking Lucian backward. The chains holding Caleb dissolve, and he collapses to the ground, gasping for breath.
“Nerina, no!” he shouts, scrambling to his feet.
The shard’s energy courses through me, its heat searing my skin. The core resists, its light thrashing violently, but I hold on, channeling everything I have into severing its connection to Lucian. The room shakes, the ground cracking beneath us as the core begins to destabilize.
Lucian rises, his face twisted with fury and fear. “You don’t understand what you’re doing!” he roars, his voice echoing like thunder.
“I understand enough,” I reply, my voice strained. “This ends now.”
The core’s light intensifies, blinding and all-consuming. Caleb rushes to my side, his hand closing over mine as we stand together against the storm. The energy surges, a deafening roar filling the chamber as the core begins to collapse.
For a moment, everything is chaos. Then, silence.
When the light fades, the core is gone. The room is still, the oppressive energy replaced by a calm, almost serene quiet. Lucian lies on the ground, motionless, his power stripped away. Caleb and I stand together, battered but alive, the shard’s glow dimming in my hand.
“We did it,” Caleb says, his voice a mix of relief and exhaustion.
I nod, tears streaming down my face. “It’s over.”
But even as I say the words, I know our journey isn’t finished. The labyrinth may be silent, but its scars remain. Together, Caleb and I will face whatever comes next, one step at a time.
