The Fracture

The Fracture
Lily’s POV

This house had always felt like a sanctuary to me, a place where the storms of the outside world could never reach. But tonight, the warmth had evaporated, replaced by a suffocating silence. I sat at the dining table, staring at my phone screen. It was still lit, displaying the image of my husband and the woman from his past.

The sound of Ashton’s footsteps echoed in the hallway, heavy and hurried. Normally, I would stand and welcome him with a hug, but this time, my body felt rigid. I felt as if I were looking at a stranger who had just walked into my home.

"Lily?" he called out softly.

I did not answer. I slid my phone toward the center of the table with a slow, deliberate motion, letting the photo speak for itself.

Ashton froze. His eyes fixed on the screen before shifting to mine. A flash of guilt, anger, and confusion surged through his gaze. "Lily, this is not what it looks like. Sandra trapped me. She."

"Since when?" I cut him off coldly. My own voice sounded foreign to my ears, calm but sharp. "Since when did you start hiding your meetings with her from me, Ashton?"

"I was not hiding it," Ashton said, stepping closer. He tried to reach for my hand, but I pulled away. "She intercepted me in the lobby. She wanted to talk about David Taylor. She said your father was planning something to destroy our marriage."

I let out a short, bitter laugh. "And you believed her? You let her touch you, let her whisper poison in your ear, just because she mentioned my father’s name?"

"I only wanted to protect you!" Ashton’s voice rose, thick with frustration.

"By becoming a liar?" I challenged. I stood up, staring him down. "Daniel was right. You are used to using people. Now that your mother is in prison and your reputation is on the line, am I still useful to you? Or have you realized that Sandra is a more suitable partner for your business interests?"

Ashton’s face hardened. "Daniel? You would rather believe a man who tried to destroy my sister than your own husband?"

"At least Daniel was honest about his intentions!" I screamed. "He does not pretend to be a hero while letting his ex-girlfriend touch him in public!"

The argument broke like a collapsing dam. We hurled painful words at one another, ripping open old wounds that should have long since healed. For the first time, I did not see Ashton as my protector. I saw a man full of secrets and ego.

I did not sleep in our room that night. I locked myself in the guest room, staring at the ceiling as tears flowed without end. The seeds of doubt Daniel had planted, watered by the photo from Sandra, had grown into a dark forest within my heart.

Ashton’s POV

I slammed my fist against the office wall until my knuckles bled. The physical pain was nothing compared to the suffocating weight in my chest. I had lost control. Sandra had succeeded. That photo, a mere split second captured from the wrong angle, had shattered the trust I had worked so hard to build with Lily.

I sat in my high back chair, staring into the darkness outside the window. My mind circled Sandra’s words about David Taylor. If it was true that he wanted to take Lily back, I could not allow it. But how could I protect her if she would not even look me in the eye?

My phone vibrated with a message from a private number.

Ashton, do not be stubborn. David Taylor has already signed a contract with the biggest law firm in the city. Tomorrow morning, they will file a lawsuit to challenge the validity of your marriage. You have 12 hours to meet me and plan a countermove. Come to my apartment. Alone. – Sandra.

I threw the phone onto the desk. It was a blatant trap. Sandra wanted me to come to her, to destroy whatever shred of dignity I had left in Lily’s eyes. But if I did not go, and David actually moved against us.

A soft knock sounded at the door. I looked up, hoping it was Lily coming to make peace. Instead, it was Mark, my head of security.

"Sir, there is something you need to see," Mark said, his expression grim. He handed me a tablet displaying CCTV footage from near Lily’s campus earlier that afternoon.

On the screen, I saw Lily leaving the psychology building. She was not alone. Daniel was standing by her car, talking to her from a very close distance. He even reached out to touch her shoulder before she got into the car. Lily looked devastated and confused.

My blood boiled. "That man. He is using this situation to brainwash her."

"That is not all, sir," Mark continued. "We traced the number that sent the photo to Mrs. Williams. The signal originated from the same area as Professor Daniel’s office."

I sat stunned. Sandra and Daniel were working together. Sandra was attacking me from the business side while Daniel attacked Lily’s mind.

"Get the car ready," I said in a low, threatening tone. "I am not going to see Sandra. I am going to the source of all this."

"Where are you going, sir?"

"To David Taylor’s house," I replied firmly. "It is time to end this game with the master himself. If he wants a war, I will give him one he will never forget."

I walked out, passing the guest room where Lily was staying. I wanted to knock, to tell her that I knew who was behind this. But I knew words would not be enough. I needed proof. I needed a decisive victory to bring her back to me.

As my car cut through the night toward the Taylor estate, I made a silent vow. Anyone who tried to touch what was mine, whether it was Sandra and her obsession, Daniel and his grudge, or David and his power, would be destroyed by my hand.

The Williams family might be wounded, but a wounded lion was the most lethal.

Lily’s POV

At three in the morning, the roar of an engine leaving the mansion woke me. I ran to the window and watched Ashton’s car disappear into the darkness.

Where was he going so early? Was he going to see Sandra?

The pain hit me again, sharper than before. I reached for my phone, intending to call a taxi and leave this house. I wanted to go anywhere but here. However, a notification appeared in my student email.

It was a research draft from Daniel. But in the attachments, there was a document that should not have been there. It was a scan of an old agreement between Ashton Williams and my father, David Taylor.

I opened it with trembling hands. The date was exactly one week before our wedding. It was an agreement regarding the transfer of Taylor assets to Williams as compensation for "reputational damage."

Tears dripped onto my phone screen. Daniel was right. This marriage had been nothing more than a transaction from the start. A bargaining chip to satisfy Ashton’s revenge.

I slumped onto the cold floor, hugging my knees. In the dead of night, I realized I was standing in the middle of a battlefield I did not understand, flanked by men who saw me as nothing more than a trophy or a tool for vengeance.

"Enough," I whispered to myself. If Ashton could play dirty, and my father could be cunning, then I, the daughter of David Taylor and the wife of Ashton Williams, would play a game of my own.

I wiped my tears, stood up, and began packing my clothes. I was not leaving to hide. I was leaving to take back control of my life.
