Chapter 69 Let me in
Chapter 69 Let me in
Zoe's POV
I was sitting on my bed staring at the wall when the knock came..
I didn't move immediately. Just looked at the door.
Another knock.
"Ma'am." The inn girl's voice. Young. Soft. "Someone is here to see you."
I stood up. Pulled my robe tighter. Walked to the door and opened it.
The inn girl stood there. Behind her was a man.
Middle aged. Plain clothes. Nothing remarkable about him except his eyes. Still. Calm. The kind of eyes that had seen a lot and decided a long time ago not to be surprised by anything anymore.
He was looking directly at me.
I looked at the man.
He looked back.
"Who are you." I said.
He didn't answer that. Just held my gaze steady.
I faced the inn girl and asked her to leave.
"Let me in." He said.
"What? Why would I do that."
"Because if you really want to know the truth Zoe, you'd invite me in."
I quickly glanced around to see if anyone was nearby. No one. Then with confusion I opened the door wider and watched him walk in like someone who had already known they were going to be invited in.
"My wife and I would like you to come see us." He said the moment I locked the door. His voice was low. Even. "Tomorrow night."
"For what reason."
"The truth." He said simply. "To all that you are looking for."
The room was very quiet suddenly.
"Who is your wife? I don't even know what you mean." I said carefully.
Something moved in his eyes. Not quite a smile. Just a recognition. Like he had expected me to say exactly that.
"You will." He said. "Tomorrow night. Come as yourself." He paused. "Come as Zoe."
My whole body went still as he mentioned my name again.
He held my gaze for one more second.
Then he turned and walked to the door. Quiet footsteps. Unhurried. Like a man who had said everything he needed to say and was perfectly comfortable leaving the rest to me. I couldn't believe myself but I was already following him like I had questions for him. And yes I did. But maybe not now.
I stood in the reception watching him go.
The inn girl looked up at me. "Should I have stopped him ma'am? He just walked in and asked for you by name and—"
"What name did he mention." I asked trying to control my tone.
She blinked. "Lady Margaret ma'am."
I looked back down the empty corridor.
He had asked for Lady Margaret at the desk.
But told me to come as Zoe.
