Eternally Bound, Chapter 57: Time Is Running Out

Eternally Bound, Chapter 57: Time Is Running Out
Eva

The days that follow are a blur of activity, each moment a race against the ticking clock. Bael’s shadows stretch across the realms, tendrils of darkness seeking any sign of the White Wolf. Brandon’s network of informants scours the mortal world, leaving no corner unexplored, no whisper unheeded. Eric’s visions, though fragmented and often cryptic, offer glimpses of possible locations—a forest shrouded in mist, a mountain peak bathed in moonlight, a cave hidden beneath ancient roots. Vincent and Vlad use their connections in the supernatural underworld, and their inquiries are met with both fear and reverence. The White Wolf is a figure of legend, and his name alone opens doors that would otherwise remain closed.

But as the days turn into weeks, our efforts yield nothing but frustration. My group is tiring from trying to keep Astaroth under control, our abilities are being stretched so thin, and I worry about the toll it is taking on our souls. The White Wolf remains elusive, a ghost in the wind. Frustration begins to set in, and tensions rise among us. The once-cohesive unit is fraying at the edges, each of us carrying the weight of our failures.

"This is pointless," Brandon growls one evening, tossing a report onto the table with a thud that makes the candles flicker. "We’re chasing a myth. Maybe the White Wolf is just a story now. He can’t exist, or we would have found him."

"He’s real," I insist, though doubt creeps into my voice like a poison. "I’ve felt his presence before. He’s out there."

"And if he is?" Vincent asks, his tone laced with skepticism, his eyes narrowing as he studies me. "What makes you think he’ll help us? The White Wolf doesn’t owe us anything."

"Because we need him," I say, my voice steady, though my heart aches with uncertainty. "And if he’s truly a force of balance, he’ll understand the stakes."

Vlad leans against the wall, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. "Even if we find him, there’s no guarantee he’ll side with us. The White Wolf is... neutral. He doesn’t take sides."

"Then we’ll convince him," Bael says, his voice firm, his presence a rock in the storm. "We’ll show him that Astaroth is a threat to everything he stands for. He knows she is evil and manipulative. He knows she had something to do with his mate’s disappearance."

Eric nods, his expression grim, his eyes distant as if seeing something beyond the room. "We can’t afford to give up. Not now."

But as the weeks turn into months, our hope begins to wane like a candle in the wind. Astaroth’s presence grows stronger, her influence spreading like a poison through the realms. Rumors of her minions wreaking havoc reach our ears, and we know time is running out. The world is changing, the balance shifting, and we are powerless to stop it. All of the beings I resurrected are doing their part, but it isn’t enough. Darkness is winning.

One night, as I sit alone in our bedroom, the weight of the world pressing down on me, a faint whisper reaches my ears. It’s a voice I haven’t heard before, but it’s a voice that sends a jolt of recognition through me. "Eva..."

I freeze, my heart pounding, my breath catching in my throat. "White Wolf? Is it you?”

The whisper comes again, softer this time, but unmistakable. "Yes, Eva... find me... before it’s too late."

I spring into action, my divine senses heightened, my mind racing. "Bael! Brandon! Eric! Vincent! Vlad! I’ve found him!"

They gather around me, their faces a mix of hope and skepticism, their eyes searching mine for answers. "Where?" Bael asks, his voice urgent, his hands clenching into fists.

I close my eyes, focusing on the whisper, on the faint pull of his presence. It’s a thread, thin and fragile, but it’s there. "The Forest of Echoes. He’s there, waiting for us."

“It can’t be. Eva, how do you know of it?” Bael asks with his eyes full of worry.

“I don’t know. It is just the name I heard when I connected to him just now. Why?”

“Eva, the Forest of Echoes is a place of ancient magic, a realm where time and space bend and twist like a living entity. It’s a dangerous place, but if the White Wolf is there, it’s where we need to be,” he explains, and without hesitation, we set out, our hearts filled with a renewed sense of purpose. As we journey through various realms until we reach the forest, the air grows heavy with an eerie silence. The trees seem to watch us, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers, their leaves whispering secrets we cannot understand. The ground beneath our feet shifts and changes, as if the forest itself is alive, testing our resolve.

"This place gives me the creeps," Brandon mutters.

"Stay alert," Bael warns, his shadows dancing around us like sentinels, their darkness a stark contrast to the eerie light of the forest. "We don’t know what we’ll find here."

Hours pass, the forest’s twists and turns leading us deeper into its heart. Just as doubt begins to creep in, a figure emerges from the shadows. He is tall and lean yet muscular, his long white hair flowing like a river of moonlight, his eyes a piercing silver that seems to see right through us. His presence is both calming and unnerving, a paradox that leaves me breathless.

"White Wolf," I breathe, my voice filled with awe, my heart pounding in my chest.

He regards us silently, his expression unreadable, his gaze sweeping over each of us like a judge weighing our worth. "You’ve come," he says, his voice a low rumble that seems to echo through the forest, a sound that vibrates in my very soul.

"We need your help," I say, stepping forward, my voice steady despite the trepidation in my heart. "Astaroth is rising, and we can’t stop her alone."

The White Wolf’s gaze lingers on my companions, his eyes narrowing as he takes in their strength, their determination, and their flaws. "You bring a lot of baggage with you, Eva. Are you sure you’re ready for what I can offer?"
