Chapter 84 Eyes on Mrs. Sinclair
The Sinclair Industries headquarters rose high above the city.
Evelyn slowed the car as she pulled into the long driveway leading toward the towering building. For a moment, she simply sat there, staring.
She had seen pictures of it before.
But standing in front of it now was entirely different.
The massive structure gleamed
under the morning sun, its polished glass reflecting the surrounding skyline. People in suits streamed in and out through the wide revolving doors, moving with purpose and urgency.
It felt… intimidating.
Evelyn tightened her grip on the steering wheel.
‘This is where Roman built everything.’
Her stomach twisted slightly.
Behind her, another black car rolled into the driveway and parked several spaces away.
Leo stepped out quickly, adjusting the folder tucked under his arm as he walked toward her car.
Evelyn stepped out just as he approached.
“Boss lady,” Leo said with a quick nod.
Evelyn let out a small breath.
“Please don’t call me that here.”
Leo blinked.
“Why not?”
“Because everyone already thinks I’m here because of Roman,” she said quietly. “Let’s not make it worse.”
Leo scratched the back of his head.
“Well… technically…”
Evelyn shot him a look.
Leo immediately straightened.
“Right. Understood.”
They both turned toward the building.
Up close, it felt even bigger.
The tall glass doors reflected Evelyn’s figure—her cream blouse and charcoal skirt, with her blazer draped neatly over her arm.
For a second, she remembered Roman’s voice that morning.
‘You can thank me by surviving your first day.’
Evelyn inhaled slowly and slipped the blazer on.
“Ready?” Leo asked.
She nodded.
They walked toward the entrance together.
The moment the security guards spotted Leo, they immediately straightened.
“Good morning, Mr. Hart,” one of them greeted respectfully.
Leo nodded casually.
“Morning.”
But as Evelyn stepped through the revolving doors beside him, the guards’ eyes flickered toward her.
A surprised expression flashed across their faces.
Inside, the lobby was enormous.
Marble floors stretched across the vast space, polished so perfectly they reflected the high ceiling lights.
A massive silver logo reading SINCLAIR INDUSTRIES dominated the far wall.
Employees moved across the lobby in steady streams, quiet conversations buzzing in the background.
Then someone noticed her.
A young woman near the reception desk slowed, her eyes widening slightly before she leaned closer to whisper to the colleague beside her.
“Isn’t that… Evelyn? The young mistress of the Hayes family?”
“What? How do you know?”
“You didn’t see the videos circulating online a few months ago?”
Another employee cast a quick glance toward Evelyn before lowering her voice.
“Apparently… she’s the CEO’s wife.”
A small gasp escaped someone nearby.
“Shh! Don’t get me in trouble. Leo is right there!”
Like ripples spreading across water, more heads turned.
In seconds, Evelyn had become the center of attention.
She kept walking as if she hadn’t noticed anything.
But she could feel the weight of every stare.
Leo leaned slightly toward her.
“Just keep walking,” he murmured quietly.
Evelyn nodded, lifting her chin as they approached the elevators.
The whispers followed them across the lobby.
“I heard she’s joining the company.”
“Really?”
“But the CEO is on sabbatical…”
“How is she going to survive the acting CEO?”
By the time they reached the elevators, a few employees had already stepped aside to give them space.
The elevator doors slid open. They stepped inside.
Just as the doors were about to close, a delicate hand suddenly reached in and pressed the button.
The doors reopened.
A petite young woman stepped inside gracefully.
She was strikingly pretty, dressed in an elegant ivory blouse tucked into a fitted navy skirt. Her long, milky-blonde hair shimmered softly under the elevator lights.
Her gaze moved to Leo first.
Her lips curved into a warm smile.
“Good morning, Leo.”
Leo nodded politely.
“Morning, Amelia.”
Then her attention shifted slowly to Evelyn.
She studied her openly.
Leo’s brows furrowed slightly.
Evelyn cleared her throat, feeling oddly uncomfortable under the scrutiny.
“Good morning,” she said politely.
Amelia’s smile brightened.
“Oh! You must be Evelyn.”
Her voice was sweet and light, almost musical.
“I was wondering who arrived with Leo that managed to draw the attention of the entire company this early in the morning.”
Leo’s expression hardened slightly at the way she addressed the CEO’s wife so casually.
Evelyn met her gaze calmly.
“Yes.”
Amelia tilted her head slightly, the same pleasant smile still resting on her lips.
“I’ve heard quite a lot about you.”
Something about the way she said it made Evelyn uneasy.
Then Amelia suddenly turned back to Leo.
“Oh Leo! I almost forgot.”
Leo looked at her with visible irritation.
“What?”
“The investment analytics team has been looking for you,” Amelia said lightly. “There’s a problem with the quarterly projection files. They’ve been struggling to resolve it all morning.”
Leo rubbed his temples.
“God… why today?” he muttered.
“I know, right?” Amelia said sympathetically. “Everyone’s a little stressed.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Is everything okay?”
“Yes!” Leo answered quickly.
“Everything is fine.”
Amelia chuckled softly.
“Oh Leo, you don’t have to hide it.”
Then she turned toward Evelyn again.
“Don’t worry,” she said sweetly. “I can take Evelyn upstairs. The executive offices are on the same floor anyway.”
Leo hesitated.
“Thank you, but I was instructed by the boss to escort his wife personally.”
Amelia waved a hand dismissively.
“Your floor is coming up.”
Her voice carried a gentle sing-song tone.
“You wouldn’t want to be late solving that problem. Especially now that Roman isn’t here.”
Evelyn’s brows knitted slightly at the way she said Roman’s name so casually.
She turned to Leo.
“Leo, you should go. It sounds important.”
Leo looked conflicted, but the elevator dinged before he could argue.
The doors slid open.
He looked back at Evelyn. Then bowed slightly.
“Thank you, boss lady.”
Evelyn gave him a small nod.
The doors closed.
The elevator continued rising.
For a moment, silence filled the space.
The numbers above the door climbed higher.
Then Amelia stepped forward until she stood directly in front of Evelyn.
Her arms crossed lightly as she tilted her head.
“So,” she said pleasantly, “you’re the new daughter-in-law of the Sinclair family.”
Evelyn said nothing, keeping her eyes forward.
She didn’t want to attract trouble on her first day.
But for some reason, she had disliked this woman the moment she stepped into the elevator.
Amelia didn’t seem bothered by the lack of response.
Instead, she slowly lifted her gaze.
She tried to meet Evelyn’s eyes… but even in heels she was still noticeably shorter.
She had to tilt her head up slightly.
Evelyn couldn’t help the faint curve of amusement tugging at her lips.
She often complained about having to look up at Roman whenever he spoke to her.
Seeing someone else doing the same now felt oddly satisfying.
Amelia noticed the slight smile.
For the briefest moment, her own expression stiffened.
Then the smile returned.
“Do you know how Roman ended up on sabbatical?” she asked casually.
Roman had never explained the reason.
But something about Amelia’s tone made Evelyn more uneasy than she already was.
Her gaze sharpened.
“Is this how employees of Sinclair Industries address their CEO?”
She paused deliberately.
“By his name?”
