Chapter 2 The Daughter Sold to Settle a Debt
The sound of breaking glass echoed through the small apartment like a gunshot.
Serena Hale flinched.
She froze in the doorway of the narrow kitchen, her fingers tightening instinctively around the frayed strap of her worn handbag. For a moment, she didn’t move. She didn’t breathe. Her body reacted before her mind did, muscles stiff, pulse spiking, as if she had learned long ago that sudden noises often meant something worse followed.
Then her father shouted.
“Do you think I wanted this?” His voice cracked, raw and ugly, stripped of the restraint he usually forced himself to wear. “Do you think I had a choice?”
Serena swallowed and stepped forward.
The living room looked like a storm had torn through it. A chair lay on its side near the wall. Papers were scattered across the floor, overlapping bills and envelopes stamped with red warnings. A framed photograph lay shattered near the bookshelf, glass glittering beneath the dim ceiling light like sharp ice.
Her father stood in the middle of it all, shoulders hunched, chest rising and falling too fast. His tie hung loose around his neck, his sleeves rolled unevenly, his hair disheveled in a way Serena had never seen before. His eyes were red, unfocused, like he hadn’t slept or cried for hours.
“Dad?” Serena said softly.
He turned toward her as if startled, as if he hadn’t noticed her enter at all. For a fleeting second, guilt flickered across his face. It vanished just as quickly, replaced by exhaustion.
“You’re home early,” he said, his tone flattening.
Serena nodded. “The library closed sooner.”
Her gaze drifted back to the shattered frame. It was an old photograph of her, her father, and her mother. Taken years ago, before illness hollowed their home, before hospital bills piled up, before debt crept in like a slow, quiet rot.
Without thinking, Serena crouched and began gathering the broken glass with her bare hands.
“Don’t,” her father said quickly. “You’ll cut yourself.”
“It’s fine,” she replied automatically.
A thin line of blood appeared along her finger. She barely noticed.
Silence settled between them, thick and uncomfortable. It pressed against her ears until she could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator and the distant noise of traffic outside.
Her father turned away from her.
Serena straightened slowly. “What happened?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he walked to the window, resting his hands against the frame as he stared out at the city. Neon lights blinked in the distance, bright and unreachable, a reminder of a world Serena had never belonged to.
“We’re losing the apartment,” he said suddenly.
The words landed with weight, but Serena didn’t gasp. She didn’t cry.
She had expected this.
“I’ll find another job,” she said calmly. “I can work nights too. Maybe weekends at the café—”
“It’s too late for that,” her father interrupted, his voice hollow.
Serena frowned. “What do you mean?”
He dragged a hand down his face and turned around slowly. In the harsh overhead light, he looked smaller. Older. Like a man who had already lost.
“I owe a man a lot of money,” he said. “More than I can ever pay back.”
Serena’s stomach tightened.
“What man?”
He hesitated. His eyes flicked away again, as if the name itself burned.
Then he said it quietly.
“Dominic Vale.”
The name meant nothing to her at first. Just another wealthy man. Another powerful stranger. But the way her father said it—carefully, fearfully—made something cold twist in her chest.
“And?” she asked.
“He offered a solution,” her father continued, voice low. “A way out.”
Serena waited. Her heartbeat slowed, each thud deliberate, as if her body already sensed what was coming.
“What kind of solution?” she asked.
Her father swallowed hard.
“A contract,” he said. “A marriage contract.”
The room tilted.
Serena stared at him, not understanding. “Marriage?”
“Yes.”
She shook her head slowly. “Dad, that’s not funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Who?”
He closed his eyes.
“His son.”
Serena took a step back, as if the floor had shifted beneath her.
“No,” she said immediately. “No. You can’t be serious.”
“It’s already been discussed,” he said. “The terms are clear.”
“The terms?” Her voice trembled now. “You talked about me like I wasn’t even there?”
Her father finally looked at her.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I had no choice,” he said hoarsely. “If I refuse, we lose everything. The debt will bury us.”
Serena let out a soft, broken laugh. “So you decided to bury me instead?”
Silence.
That was enough.
She backed away until her shoulders hit the wall. The familiar paint felt cold against her skin.
“You promised,” she said quietly. “After Mom died, you promised my life was mine.”
“I know,” he whispered. “I failed you.”
Serena slid down the wall and sat on the floor, knees pulled close to her chest. Her hands trembled in her lap.
“Who is he?” she asked.
Her father hesitated again, as if delaying the inevitable.
Then he said the name.
“Adrian Vale.”
The room seemed to shrink.
Serena felt something cold settle deep inside her chest.
“That’s the man on the news,” she said slowly. “The scandal.”
Her father nodded.
The motel. The women. The headlines.
Her stomach turned.
“You want me to marry him?” she whispered.
“It’s only a contract,” her father rushed to say. “There will be rules. Protection. He doesn’t want love either.”
Serena stood abruptly.
“No,” she said. “I won’t do it.”
Her father’s shoulders slumped.
“I already signed my part,” he said quietly.
The words cut deeper than any glass.
Signed.
Her future. Already decided.
“So that’s it?” Serena asked. “My life was negotiated without me?”
He reached for her. “Serena....”
“Don’t touch me.”
Her eyes burned, but she refused to let the tears fall.
“I need air,” she said. “I need to think.”
She grabbed her coat and rushed out before he could stop her.
The night air was cold. It burned her lungs as she walked, directionless, her thoughts louder than the city around her.
Marriage. A stranger. A contract.
Her phone buzzed.
She stopped.
Unknown number.
Meeting confirmed. Tomorrow, 10 a.m. Vale Residence. Please arrive on time.
Her hands shook.
I haven’t agreed to anything.
The reply came instantly.
The agreement is already in motion.
Serena looked up at the dark sky.
Somewhere across the city, a man who didn’t want her was being forced into the same cage.
And tomorrow, she would meet the husband she never chose.
