Chapter 168 The Cabal Beneath Ashviel

Chapter 168 The Cabal Beneath Ashviel
Lord Cassian POV
Deep beneath the historic archives of Ashveil, far below the reach of public detection wards and academy security, the true work of the realm continued in absolute silence.
Lord Cassian stepped down the damp, spiral stone staircase, his fine velvet cloak rustling softly against his leather boots. He entered a massive, sunken chamber lit only by suspended null-crystals that hummed with a quiet, anti-magical blue glow. The air was bone-chilling, smelling of damp earth, ancient parchment, and cold forged iron. Water dripped rhythmically from a stone stalactite in the far corner, marking time in the quiet dark like a slow, relentless clock.
Seated around a long obsidian table were seven men and women, his inner council of regional cell leaders representing the highest ranks of Ashveil nobility, military logistics, and academic administration. They wore dark gray coats free of family crests or noble heraldry, their faces shadowed by the pale, cold light hanging above the center of the table.
"You are late, Cassian," a tall, scarred woman at the head of the table noted, her voice completely flat as she reviewed a stack of parchment reports under the pale light. Commander Vance was a former border general who had lost half her squad in the final year of the old war, and her patience for delays was non-existent.
"I was attending the practical combat trials at the Citadel, Commander Vance," Cassian replied smoothly, pulling out a heavy stone chair and taking his seat at the foot of the long table. "Our young dragon put on quite a show today. She disarmed three senior battle-mages in less than twelve seconds using her unified core. It was a remarkable demonstration of balance and technique."
He pulled a small leather ledger from his inner coat pocket and laid it flat on the obsidian table, opening it to a page filled with dense numerical notations. "Her combat metrics are exceptional. Her unified core is developing exactly on schedule, precisely as our historical projections predicted three decades ago. Her balance between Vreth shadow and Range light is nearly perfect, which presents us with a very specific set of variables."
A quiet, uneasy murmur passed through the council members seated around the table.
"And what of the regional censuses?" Cassian asked, turning his gaze toward an elderly nobleman sitting on his right.
"The reports are deeply concerning," Lord Vane replied, sliding a map covered in red ink marks toward the center of the table. "The Resonants are appearing in every major province now. Children born to common farmers are manifesting hybrid magic without any noble bloodline heritage. In the southern crags, a twelve-year-old girl accidentally leveled a stone barn during an emotional outburst last Tuesday. The ancient suppression wards are completely dead, Cassian. The magical barrier that kept the peace for generations is gone, and the ambient energy of the continent is overflowing."
"They are calling it a miracle in the lower villages," Commander Vance added, her dark eyes cold and unblinking. "The common folk believe it is a blessing from the earth, a sign of prosperity. They do not realize that ten thousand children casting wild magic without formal training will tear the agricultural infrastructure and local trade routes to pieces."
Cassian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the obsidian table and lacing his long fingers together. His warm, diplomatic smile from the Citadel balcony was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, terrifyingly absolute clarity that settled over his features like gray stone.
"Then our duty is clearer than ever," Cassian stated, his voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of personal malice or anger. "We are not acting out of hatred, my friends. We are acting out of historical necessity. The core doctrine of the Quietist Cabal has remained unchanged for three hundred years."
He looked around the circle, meeting the eyes of every cell leader in turn until each one nodded in silent agreement.
"Unchecked magic, left unified in a single individual or allowed to spread freely among the masses, inevitably leads to catastrophic tyranny, vanity, and world-ending war," Cassian lectured softly, his tone resembling that of a patient professor teaching a class of young scholars. "Our ancestors split the ancient power and constructed the original suppression wards for a profound reason. They understood that humanity cannot handle absolute light without burning the world to cinders. For twenty years, Caelum and Mira have played at peace, unaware that their daughter's unified core is the catalyst that will wake every dormant power line on the continent."
"What of the girl herself?" Commander Vance asked, leaning forward to rest her calloused hands on the map. "She possesses the Gilded Gaze. If she senses our true intent when we interact with her at the academy, our entire network will be compromised before the array is ready."
"She will not sense anything until it is far too late," Cassian interrupted smoothly, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "She trusts her peers implicitly. She trusts the administrative structure of the academy. And most importantly, she believes that love, unity, and open dialogue are enough to keep the world safe. She looks for lies in spoken words, but she does not look for conviction in silence. My mind is entirely focused on the preservation of the realm. Therefore, my aura shows no malice, no guilt, and no deception. To her Truth-Sight, I am simply a dedicated elder working for the future of the state."
"And her friends?" Lord Vane inquired, gesturing toward the side notes in Cassian's ledger. "The Vreth girl and the young ward-builder?"
"Tools," Cassian dismissed lightly, turning a page in his ledger. "Useful tools who perform their tasks without understanding the grand machine they serve. The Vreth girl acts on ancestral duty, while the boy acts on academic ambition. Neither of them sees the complete picture."
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a single, heavy silver coin stamped with the old imperial seal, and placed it on the parchment map directly over the drawn location of the Ranges.
"Now that the old suppression wards have decayed completely, we will execute our permanent solution," Cassian declared quietly, the soft blue light of the null-crystals reflection in his dark eyes. "We will restore the ancient fracture before this new generation of mages can bloom into total chaos. We will save the world from its own destructive power, even if we have to burn their precious peace to the ground to achieve it."
