Bernard’s Involvement

The small café at the corner of Main Street had always been a place of quiet comfort for Scarlet. Its warm, dimly lit interior, filled with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee, had provided her solace more times than she cared to admit. She had come here countless times, to escape, to think, or sometimes simply to find a moment of peace amidst the chaos of her life. But today, the usual calm felt distant, as if it was no longer enough to soothe the storm inside her.

Scarlet sat in the corner booth, her fingers wrapped tightly around the warm ceramic cup, though the tea inside had long since gone cold. Her gaze was fixed on the steam that rose from the surface, the thin tendrils of vapor curling upward in slow, deliberate spirals. She felt detached from everything around her, as if the world outside this small, cozy space had ceased to exist. The conversation she had overheard echoed in her mind like a broken record each word a weight, a burden, a chain that bound her tighter and tighter with every passing moment.

Her chest tightened at the thought of confronting Wyatt, of asking him the questions she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear the answers to. But there was one person who might be able to help her make sense of it all. One person who knew the darkness of this world better than anyone else. Bernard.

She hadn’t planned on bringing him into this mess. She’d always tried to shield him from the ugliness of her problems, but things had changed. He was the only one who had been there for her since the moment she’d lost everything her parents, her home, her sense of security. And now, he was the one person she couldn’t turn away from.

The bell above the door jingled softly, and Scarlet’s gaze lifted instinctively. She saw him immediately Bernard, with his kind face and easy smile, walking toward her. His presence was like a breath of fresh air, grounding her in a way nothing else could.

He slid into the seat across from her, his eyes scanning her face with concern. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Scarlet didn’t respond right away. She took a slow sip from her cup, her fingers trembling slightly as the warm liquid slid down her throat. “I overheard something today,” she said quietly, the words feeling heavy on her tongue. “Something I wasn’t supposed to hear.”

Bernard’s eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

She set her cup down with a soft clink, the sound of it sending a ripple of discomfort through the air. “Wyatt,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s all about control. He’s using me, Bernard. He’s been using me from the start.”

Bernard’s expression hardened at the mention of Wyatt’s name. “I figured as much,” he said, his tone grim. He leaned back in his seat, his hands folding together in front of him as if trying to organize his thoughts. “But you’re not the only one he’s been controlling, Scarlet.”

She looked at him, confusion written all over her face. “What do you mean?”

Bernard hesitated for a moment, his eyes flicking away before returning to meet hers. The vulnerability in his gaze caught her off guard. “I’ve been involved, Scarlet,” he admitted quietly. “In more ways than you think.”

Her heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean? Bernard, no. You why didn’t you tell me?”

He sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “I didn’t want to drag you into this. I thought I could handle it on my own, that I could keep you safe from all the mess. But the truth is, I’ve been complicit. Wyatt’s been pulling the strings, using me as much as he’s used you.”

The words struck Scarlet like a blow to the chest. She sat back, feeling the weight of Bernard’s confession pressing down on her. Complicit? She couldn’t comprehend it Bernard, the man who had always been her rock, her unwavering support, was entangled in Wyatt’s web of deceit.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Bernard continued, his voice tight. “I’ve been trying to find a way out, but Wyatt’s got his claws in so deep. He’s manipulated me, too. I thought I could help you from the sidelines, but now I realize… I’ve been part of the problem. I never meant to hurt you, Scarlet. I swear.”

She felt the sting of betrayal, but it wasn’t as sharp as the one from Gabrielle. This was different. Bernard had always been like family to her, and hearing that he had been involved in the same schemes that had ruined her life made her heart ache. Yet, she couldn’t ignore the sincerity in his eyes, the regret that lingered in his every word.

“I should have known,” Scarlet murmured, her voice tinged with disbelief. “All this time, I thought you were on my side. But you ” She stopped herself, trying to collect her thoughts. “Why didn’t you warn me, Bernard? Why didn’t you tell me what was happening?”

“I couldn’t,” he replied, his voice quiet but resolute. “I thought I could protect you without getting too involved. But I was wrong. I’ve been walking a fine line for too long, trying to stay under Wyatt’s radar, but I can’t do it anymore. I can help you now, Scarlet. But only if you’ll let me.”

Scarlet stared at him, torn between the pain of his betrayal and the flicker of hope that his words ignited. She didn’t know what to think anymore. The web of lies, manipulation, and control had become so tangled that she wasn’t sure where the truth ended and the lies began. But one thing was clear she couldn’t face Wyatt and this mess alone.

She leaned forward, her fingers curling around the edge of the table as she met Bernard’s gaze. “If I let you help me,” she said slowly, “you have to promise me something. No more lies. No more secrets. If you’re in this, you’re all in.”

Bernard nodded, his jaw tight with determination. “I promise. No more lies.”

For the first time in what felt like ages, Scarlet allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was a way out of this. But she knew that the road ahead wouldn’t be easy. The game had only just begun.
