Chapter 187 Chapter 187
Chapter 187 Chapter 187
Ronan finds Luna in the garden at dawn.
She's tending roses the ones she's kept alive for decades. Red and deep crimson, the color of blood and love intertwined. She tends them every morning like ritual. Like prayer.
The teen with ancient eyes sits beside his mother on the garden bench.
"I need to tell you something," Ronan says quietly. "Something... Something the prophet consciousness has recently shown me. Something I waited until now to share because you needed to make peace with it first."
Luna's hands still on the roses.
"It's about Grand Father," Ronan continues. "Your father. Ronan Rivers."
"He's not dead," Ronan says gently. "But he's not alive either. Not in way that matters. Not in way you could reach him."
Luna feels her throat tighten.
"You remember He was there," Ronan continues, "the night you gave birth to your first child. The one who didn't survive. He was holding your hand. He felt the moment the baby died. He felt your grief like it was his own."
Tears stream down Luna's face.
"And he knew," Ronan says, his ancient voice carrying compassion, "in that moment, that he was going feral. He could feel it happening. The disease spreading through his wolf nature. He could feel himself losing control. Losing ability to remain human. Losing capacity to be safe around you."
He takes his mother's hand.
"He didn't abandon you," Ronan says. "He loved you so much that he left."
"For years," Ronan continues, "he watched you. From shadows. From distance. He watched you grieve the child. Watched you become Alpha female. Watched you love Damian and have more children. Watched his granddaughter become something cosmic. Watched his granddaughter develop prophet consciousness.."
Luna's body shakes with sobs.
"He was there," Ronan says, "when you didn't know he was there. He watched things around you grow twisted. Watched Damian carry weight of leadership. Watched pack flourish under your and Father's care. And he couldn't touch any of it. Couldn't speak. Couldn't be present. Could only watch like ghost haunting people he loved."
Ronan squeezes her hand.
"The feral disease," he continues, "isn't evil, Mother. It's transformation. Wolf nature changing, hardening, becoming more animal than human. It happens to some wolves when they carry too much pain. When they witness too much loss. When they love too deeply and lose too completely."
"At some point," Ronan says, "GrandFather understood he couldn't watch anymore. The watching was causing him pain. Being near but untouchable was torture. So he gave himself to the Council."
Luna looks up.
"He made agreement," Ronan continues. "Legal, binding agreement secretly with the council, never to let you know he was with them, told them to hide him. That until his death, he would stay in Council territory. That he would never attempt contact with you. That he would fully surrender to feral state and become animal rather than constantly fighting the transformation."
Ronan's ancient eyes meet his mother's.
"He chose that," Ronan says. "Chose to stop fighting. Chose to become fully what he was becoming. Chose to accept his own death so you could live without that haunting. So you could stop waiting for ghost to appear. So you could actually grieve instead of existing in limbo."
Luna feels the memory flooding back.
That night. Birth night. Her first Child's first breath that became last breath.
She remembers her father's hand in hers. His face above hers handsome, fierce, beloved. She remembers him holding the baby. She remembers watching his expression change. Shift. Darken.
She remembers thinking he was grieving the loss.
She remembers not understanding that he was also grieving himself. Grieving the man he was becoming. Grieving the fact that he could feel animal consciousness rising in him and couldn't stop it.
She remembers him kissing her forehead and saying: "I love you. Always, you know that?"
And she remembers him leaving that night.
She remembers thinking he couldn't bear the grief.
She didn't understand that he could bear his own, but not the risk he posed to her.
"He went to rogues," Ronan explains. "Lived among them. Watched them struggle with feral disease like he was struggling. Watched transformation consume them one by one. Waited for it to consume him too."
Ronan pulls her closer.
"But he never fought it," Ronan continues. "He accepted it. Let it happen. Became animal while keeping love human. Became something other than father but stayed loving father in his heart."
Luna weeps.
Not grief. Understanding.
Not loss. Acceptance that was always there, just not fully conscious.
"The Council," Ronan says, "keeps him in territory. Far from you. Far from pack. Far from risk he represents. He's animal now. Fully wolf. But his consciousness his memory of loving you that stayed human. That never fully transformed."
Ronan wipes his mother's tears.
"When I was born," he continues, "when I developed prophet consciousness, it was because I inherited gift from grand father's feral state. I just didn't want to tell anyone even when we all went looking for him. The disease didn't weaken him it deepened him. Made him something other. Made his consciousness spread across time and space. Made his love able to reach through distance."
"The peace you felt earlier," Ronan says, "when you decided to consider him dead? That wasn't giving up. That was understanding. Your soul knew the truth before your mind could accept it."
Luna nods through tears.
"He is dead to you," Ronan says gently. "Not because he stopped loving you. But because he stopped being able to be present in your life. And that's exactly what he chose. That's the gift he gave you permission to stop waiting. Permission to grieve. Permission to move forward."
Luna holds her son close.
"Grand Father loved you like this," Ronan says. "Love so strong it required absence. Love so deep it demanded he become something other than himself. Love that manifested through distance because proximity would have been cruelty."
Luna understands suddenly.
Understands what her father did.
Understands what her daughter might have to do.
"Rowan," Luna whispers.
"Yes," Ronan confirms. "Grandfather's sacrifice is template for what Rowan might choose. If she decides to fully transform to become only divine or only cosmic she's following his example. Choosing to become something other so those she loves can survive."
Ronan holds his mother while she cries.
Not tears of loss anymore.
Tears of understanding.
Tears of seeing the lineage of love that transforms. That sacrifices. That becomes ghost in service of protecting the living.
"Does he know?" Luna asks. "Does grandfather know that I know?"
"He sees through my consciousness," Ronan says. "Through prophecy. Through the feral connection that makes him aware of family across distance. He knows. He's always known that someday I would tell you. He waited for you to be ready. He waited until you made peace with his death so that knowing the truth wouldn't destroy that peace."
Luna squeezes her son.
"He loves you still," Ronan says. "From whatever he's become. From whatever animal form holds his human consciousness. He loves you. And his love is the reason you can understand what Rowan faces. His love is the reason you can support her making impossible choice."
Luna nods against her son's shoulder.
"Your grandfather," Ronan continues, "became a ghost so you could live. Now watch what your daughter might become so that love survives."
