Chapter 304: Conflicting Strategies

Chapter 304: Conflicting Strategies
Things were in turmoil on both sides.
Everything seemed to be going against the natural order of the empire, much to the unease of many nobles—and the delight of Xenorth.
He felt as though he had every right to be there, to interfere in everything, and to claim his place within the empire.
Lyra's Plan
Lyra stared at Ryan in silence.
He was sitting by the window, his elbows resting on his knees and his hands clasped in front of his face. The bluish light of Valthorya's stars filtered through the glass, illuminating only part of his exhausted features. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and a thin mist of darkness still curled around his fingers.
He looked exhausted.
But to Lyra, something else mattered far more.
Ryan was still fighting.
She could feel it.
No matter how deeply the darkness had penetrated his soul, there was still a part of him resisting it. A part that loved. A part that feared. A part that was still the man she had once known.
And Lyra had just made a decision.
She would help him.
No matter the cost.
"You've been staring at me for a while," Ryan murmured without lifting his head.
Lyra slowly approached him.
"I'm trying to understand you."
He let out a bitter laugh.
"Good luck with that."
She sat down beside him.
"I don't need to understand everything. I just need to find a way to reach you."
Ryan finally raised his eyes.
"Lyra..."
"No," she interrupted. "This time, you're going to listen to me."
He fell silent.
Lyra took a deep breath.
"You believe you need to master the darkness to defeat Sergio. You believe that if you can control the dragon's power, you'll be able to face him as an equal."
"Because it's true."
"Maybe it is."
Ryan frowned.
"Then why are you trying to stop me?"
"Because you're trying to control something you don't understand."
The shadows around him stirred.
"I understand it perfectly."
"No, you don't."
Her firm response made Ryan clench his jaw.
Lyra, however, didn't back down.
"The dragon isn't just increasing your power. It's amplifying your emotions. Your anger becomes more intense. Your fear turns into paranoia. Your need to protect the people you love becomes possessiveness. And your pain..."
She hesitated.
"Your pain turns into hatred."
Ryan looked away.
Because he knew she was right.
"Then what's your plan?" he asked.
Lyra stood.
"To find a way to separate you from the influence of the shadows without taking the dragon's power away."
Ryan looked stunned.
"That's impossible."
"No."
"Lyra, no one has ever been able to do that."
"No one has tried it the right way."
He stood as well.
"And what exactly do you intend to do?"
She touched the lunar pendant around her neck.
"Use my ancestral magic."
Ryan fell silent.
"Your magic?"
"My magic and yours."
His eyes widened.
"You want to combine our energies?"
"I want to create a bond between your essence and mine. Not to control you. To help you recognize when the shadows are trying to take control of your thoughts."
Ryan shook his head.
"That could be dangerous."
Lyra gave him a sad smile.
"I know."
"It could hurt you."
"I know."
"It could allow the darkness into your mind."
"I know."
Ryan stepped closer.
"Then why would you do this?"
Lyra looked up at him.
"Because you would do the same for me."
Her answer struck him hard.
Ryan remained silent for several seconds.
Then he gently cupped her face in his hands.
"I don't want you to get hurt because of me."
"You're not my burden, Ryan."
She placed her hand over his.
"You're my choice."
His eyes filled with tears.
But before he could answer, a surge of dark energy swept through the room.
Ryan immediately let go of Lyra.
His body went rigid.
"He's here."
A shiver ran through Lyra.
"Sergio?"
Ryan closed his eyes.
"No."
The shadows began gathering in the corner of the room.
An ancient presence seemed to be watching them.
Lyra took a step back.
"That ancient enemy..."
Ryan opened his eyes.
His pupils now glowed red.
"He found a way to sense my energy."
Lyra immediately understood.
"Then we have to act now."
Ryan looked at her.
"No."
"Ryan..."
"You're not doing this."
"I am."
"Lyra!"
His voice echoed through the room.
The shadows exploded around his body.
Lyra remained where she was.
Frightened.
But determined.
"You can yell at me all you want."
Ryan struggled to breathe.
"You don't understand the risk."
"I understand perfectly."
She raised her hands.
Violet symbols appeared around her wrists.
Ryan froze.
"Lyra..."
"Trust me."
The words were simple.
But to Ryan, they seemed harder to hear than anything he had ever faced in battle.
He looked down at his hands.
Then back at her.
"What if I lose control?"
Lyra stepped closer.
"Then I'll find you."
"And what if I hurt you?"
"Then you'll stop."
"What if I can't?"
Lyra moved until she was standing directly in front of him.
"Then I'll remind you who you are."
She rested her forehead against his.
For a few seconds, no words were necessary.
The shadows receded.
Ryan closed his eyes.
"I'm afraid," he confessed.
Lyra wrapped her arms around him.
"So am I."
"Then why are you so brave?"
She smiled against his chest.
"Because someone has to be."
Meanwhile, in another wing of the palace, Angela walked quickly beside Amara.
"She's going to try," Angela said.
Amara nodded.
"Lyra won't give up on him."
"It could cost her life."
Amara stopped.
"Then we need to make sure she doesn't do this alone."
Angela turned toward her.
"You know where the records are?"
"I do."
"Then let's get them."
The two women hurried through the fortress's hidden corridors.
There was little time.
Very little.
Back in the room, Lyra drew a circle of symbols across the floor.
Ryan watched her carefully.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Great."
She smiled.
"But I have hope."
Ryan took a deep breath.
He stepped into the circle.
The shadows immediately reacted.
Lyra felt his power touch her magic.
It was immense.
Brutal.
Ancient.
And at the center of that storm, there was something warm.
Ryan's heart.
She closed her eyes.
"Don't fight the darkness," she whispered.
"What?"
"Don't fight it."
Ryan hesitated.
"But you said I needed to resist."
"Resisting doesn't mean destroying it. It means recognizing what is trying to take control of you."
He took a deep breath.
The shadows wrapped around his arms.
Lyra extended her hand.
"Look at me."
Ryan obeyed.
"You are Ryan."
The shadows receded.
"You are Angela's son."
More of the darkness disappeared.
"You are the Prince of Valthorya."
The energy weakened.
"You are the man who chose to love me."
Ryan closed his eyes.
A tear slipped down his cheek.
"And I am the one who's trying to find his way back to you."
Lyra felt her magic respond.
A violet light surged through the circle.
Darkness and light collided.
For a moment, it seemed as though the universe itself had stopped to watch.
Then a voice echoed inside Ryan's mind.
Accept me.
He shuddered.
The voice was deep.
Ancient.
Seductive.
You could destroy Sergio.
Ryan clenched his fists.
Lyra noticed immediately.
"What are you hearing?"
"Him."
"Who?"
Ryan opened his eyes.
"The dragon."
Lyra tightened her grip on his hand.
"Then answer it."
Ryan stared into the shadows.
"I don't belong to you."
The energy exploded.
Lyra screamed.
The magical circle cracked.
Ryan dropped to his knees.
She rushed toward him.
"Ryan!"
He lifted his head.
For several seconds, his eyes were completely black.
Lyra froze.
Then he blinked.
The blue returned.
"Did it work?"
Lyra took a shaky breath, overcome with emotion.
"Not yet."
She helped him to his feet.
"But now we know it's possible."
Ryan looked at her.
And for the first time since he had chosen to embrace the darkness, he smiled.
"Then let's finish this."
In the corridor, however, Angela and Amara stopped outside the door.
Both of them had felt the explosion of energy.
Amara clutched the ancient grimoire tightly against her chest.
"It has begun."
Angela looked at the door.
"What?"
Amara answered in a low voice:
"The true battle for Ryan's heart."
And far away, deep within a forgotten fortress, Sergio opened his eyes.
He had felt the same surge of energy.
A slow smile spread across his face.
"So Lyra found a way to reach the dragon."
He stood.
"Interesting."
Behind him, a massive shadow opened its eyes.
Sergio didn't look frightened.
He looked pleased.
"Let them try."
The creature behind him let out a low, terrifying growl.
"The harder they fight the darkness..."
Sergio smiled.
"...the deeper it will sink its roots into Valthorya."
