Chapter 294 - Echoes in the Darkness
Ryan was alone.
The large, silent room felt like a prison. The flickering torchlight on the walls cast strange shadows that stretched and distorted as he moved. But the prince saw more than just shadows — he saw eyes. Eyes that watched him, judged him, laughed at him.
Paranoia had become a poison, slow and fatal. His mind, once sharp and strategic, now fractured into confused and disconnected thoughts. The weight of the crown was no longer just on his head but crushing his soul.
"They are lying," he murmured, staring at his reflection in the mirror.
But the mirror reflected not just his face. It also reflected the creature within him. The one Sérgio had awakened. The dragon. The beast. The dark heir of an empire built on blood and power.
Ryan touched the mirror's frame, trembling. His eyes, once golden, now had a dark glimmer at the edges. He was changing. The darkness consumed him little by little, and he knew it. But part of him... liked it.
The door opened with a subtle creak. He turned abruptly, the wild expression of a cornered animal on his face.
"Who’s there?!" he roared, his eyes flashing.
But it was just a servant. A young boy, with wide, frightened eyes. Ryan stared at him for long seconds, and in his mind, a voice whispered:
"He is a spy. Sent by Xenorth. He will tell Sérgio everything."
The boy fell to his knees.
"Forgive me, Your Highness! I only came to bring the tea, as I was ordered..."
Ryan approached slowly, the dark aura intensifying around him. When the boy trembled, Ryan realized what he was doing. His fist was clenched, and a faint black smoke rose around his fingers.
"Leave," he murmured.
The servant fled, dropping the tray with a crash. Ryan turned back to the mirror. He was panting, trembling. His hands still surrounded by a strange energy. He fell to his knees on the floor.
"You are becoming what you swore to destroy," the voice in his head whispered.
But he no longer knew if it was his conscience... or Sérgio.
The palace corridor felt colder that day. The soldiers avoided looking directly at the prince. Something about him was different, frightening. His gaze was no longer the same — it was empty, restless, unpredictable.
Helius tried to approach him in the morning, but Ryan ignored him. Amara, who attempted to send a message through Lyra, received no response.
Only one person continued to insist.
Lyra.
But Ryan avoided her. Not because he didn’t love her. But because he loved her so much that the pain of not being able to protect her was destroying him inside.
That afternoon, Ryan entered his strategy room. Maps were scattered across every corner. Holographic projections flickered, as if mocking him. In one of them, Sérgio’s face appeared.
Sérgio was smiling.
Always smiling.
Ryan punched the table, sending papers flying. The flames inside him rose, mingled with the darkness growing in his bones.
"He is always one step ahead. How is that possible?!"
The answer came as a whisper:
"Because he is like you. He understands you, sees you, molds you."
"No! I am not like him!"
The denial echoed against the walls but did not convince him.
He remembered Xenorth’s words. The veiled threat. The desire the high consul had for Lyra. It was more than jealousy. It was war. And he was surrounded.
In his mind, the entire empire turned against him. There was a plan. There was betrayal. There were spies. And perhaps… even Lyra was hiding something.
The thought hit him like a blade.
No.
She would never do that.
But...
What if she was just being used?
What if Sérgio was talking to her?
What if she was in danger too?
The protective instinct roared inside him, and with it came pain, fury, and more shadows.
Ryan stood, trembling. He needed to see her. He needed to feel that he still had control. That he was not alone.
But when he reached the door to his chambers, he stopped. Someone was watching him from the other side of the corridor.
Xenorth.
The high consul stood there, as if waiting for him. His gaze was cold, calculating. But something in his smile provoked an almost insane fury in Ryan.
"Prince," Xenorth said with false courtesy. "I hope you are well..."
"Don’t you dare pretend to care," Ryan growled. "I know what you want."
"Do you really?"
Xenorth's eyes sparkled.
"You are losing control, Ryan. And that will be your end. The people need stability... and Lyra needs a lucid man by her side."
Ryan took two steps forward.
"Say that again and you will meet the wrath of a dragon."
"I am not afraid of dragons, prince. I have faced them before."
Silence settled like a storm about to break.
"She loves me," Ryan said, his voice low.
"For now," Xenorth replied cruelly. "But how long will she endure watching you descend into madness?"
Ryan felt his fists burn with dark energy.
And then the door to the corridor opened slowly.
Lyra.
She had heard everything.
Her gaze was fixed on Ryan. But also on Xenorth. Her expression was serious, almost incredulous. It was as if she had arrived just in time to see the worst.
"What is happening here?"
Ryan swallowed hard. The shadows within him danced furiously. Xenorth calmly adjusted his clothes.
"Nothing. Just a conversation between men concerned about the future of the empire."
"Stay away from him," Lyra said firmly to Xenorth. "I saw you trying to turn him against everyone."
"That is what you think, Zyara. But sooner or later... he will fall. And I will be there to lift the empire from the ground."
Ryan roared, and the energy around him exploded in a dense wave. But Lyra held his arm.
"Ryan. No."
He looked at her. Her eyes were dark, almost dull. But there, in that moment, he found something.
Balance.
Love.
Reality.
Xenorth took a step back. He knew he had lost that round. But his smile, still present, made it clear: he would return.
Lyra and Ryan entered the chambers together.
And Ryan finally broke down.
"I am losing control," he confessed, sitting on the bed. "And... I am scared, Lyra."
She knelt before him.
"I am here. But you need to fight. You need to trust."
"Trust in whom? Everyone betrays me. Even my mind..."
She hugged him tightly.
"Trust me. Just me. Always."
He closed his eyes. For the first time in days, he allowed himself to cry. The wall of shadows was still there. But Lyra was the light amidst them.
And for her... he would try to win.
