Chapter 287 - The Fire and the Storm

Lyra remained still, gazing at Ryan with a serious, unwavering look. The silence weighed like a sharp blade between the two, cutting through the charged atmosphere of the room. Ryan, still weak but filled with a growing rage, clenched his fists at his sides, breathing heavily.

— Why are you looking at me like that? — his voice was deep, tinged with frustration and something darker that Lyra couldn't define at first.

She crossed her arms, holding his gaze.

— Because I’m waiting for you to realize what you’re doing to yourself and everyone around you.

Ryan gritted his teeth. The shadow of his fury manifested in the small tremors of his hands, in the feverish glow of his golden eyes. He disliked the way Lyra challenged him, as if she saw something in him that he couldn't see himself.

— I don’t need you to analyze me, Lyra. I need you to stand by my side.

She scoffed, impatient.

— Standing by your side doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to what’s happening, Ryan! Don’t you see? Sérgio is toying with you! He wants to destabilize you; he wants you to lose so that he can win without lifting a finger!

Ryan stepped forward, his overwhelming presence imposing over her.

— I know what I’m doing!

— You do? — Lyra shot back, raising an eyebrow. — Then tell me, Ryan. When did you lose control? When did you start becoming what you hate the most?

He fell silent.

Lyra took another step, getting close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body. Her heart pounded in her chest, but she didn't back down.

— You’re falling exactly into his game. You’re becoming everything you swore to destroy.

— I’m not like him! — Ryan growled, his dark energy manifesting in a dense breeze around him.

Lyra felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, but she didn’t look away.

— Not now. But what about tomorrow? And the day after?

Ryan ran his fingers through his hair, messing it up in frustration. His breathing was heavy.

— You don’t understand, Lyra…

— Then make me understand — Lyra insisted, her voice laden with a mix of pleading and firmness.

Ryan slowly lowered his hands, his expression twisting into a mix of anger and despair. He wanted to speak. He needed her to understand. But how could he put into words the chaos burning inside him?

— I… — He began, but his throat seemed to close up. The weight of the past weeks crushed his shoulders, and his mind throbbed with memories and promises he wasn’t sure he could keep.

Lyra saw the hesitation in him, and for a moment, her anger waned.

— Ryan, look at me.

He slowly lifted his eyes, and Lyra cupped his face with both hands, her thumbs lightly brushing his warm skin.

— You don’t have to carry everything alone.

— I am the heir prince. The future emperor — he murmured, his tone heavy with an indescribable weight. — Who else should carry this if not me?

— You’re not just a prince. You’re not just a warrior or a ruler. You’re a man, Ryan. A man that I… — She hesitated. Took a deep breath. — A man that I love.

Ryan’s eyes widened, his fury dissipating instantly.

Lyra closed her eyes for a moment, gathering courage. When she opened them, her decision was made.

— And because of that, I won’t let you lose yourself.

Ryan blinked, unable to respond. Then, as if something inside him gave way, he held Lyra’s face and kissed her.

The kiss was not gentle. It was urgent, desperate, as if he were seeking refuge in her that he couldn’t find within himself. Lyra felt the weight of his pain in that touch and responded, trying to convey everything she felt.

His lips were warm, his trembling hands holding her waist as if she were his anchor. She felt the dark energy dissipate slightly around him, as if, for a moment, he were finding a glimmer of peace.

When they pulled away, Ryan rested his forehead against hers, breathing heavily.

— You scare me, Lyra — he whispered.

She frowned.

— Why?

He looked into her eyes, an indecipherable glow in his golden gaze.

— Because you make me want to be better. And I don't know if I can.

Lyra felt her heart tighten.

— Then let me help you.

Ryan closed his eyes, exhausted, but for the first time in a long time, something inside him calmed.

And for the first time, he thought that maybe he had a chance to fight against the darkness within himself.

Even if the price was higher than he could imagine.

the price after this are right.
