Chapter 169

Chapter 169
Lila's POV

The ferry rocked gently as it moved across the dark water. The distant city lights blurred into a haze, a stark contrast to the tension still flowing through my veins. I leaned against the railing, the cool breeze brushing my face, but it did little to soothe the storm inside me.

Behind me, I heard Ethan’s footsteps, gentle and deliberate. He always moved with purpose, even when the world felt like it was collapsing around us.

“You should sit,” he said, his voice low but filled with concern.

I turned to look at him, his face etched with exhaustion yet unyielding in its strength. “I don't think I want to, Ethan. Not after everything.”

His eyes softened, and he stepped closer, resting his hand on the railing beside mine. “I know,” he said quietly. “But we’ve all been together in this. You have me. You don't have to carry the burden alone.”

His words weighed heavily on my chest. For so long, I trained myself to endure, to fight, and to survive.  But with Ethan, it was different. He saw through the walls I had built, and his presence was both a comfort and a challenge.

In the blink of an eye, he pressed his lips against mine. As if that was all I needed, the heaviness on my chest subsided.

“I don’t even know what ‘not carrying it alone’ looks like,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan reached out, his fingers brushing against mine. "This is how it appears," he stated, maintaining a steady tone. “We remain united, regardless of the severity of the situation. We’ve faced everything else side by side. Why should this be any different?”

I wanted to believe him. I want to let go of the fear that threatens to paralyse me, the fear that would snatch away every fleeting moment of peace.

But I couldn’t.

“Ethan,” I began, my voice trembling. “What if this doesn’t end the way we hope? What if we can't have our life back? What if…”

“Stop,” he interrupted gently but firmly. His hand closed over mine, grounding me. “I don’t deal in ‘what ifs.’ I deal with what’s real—what’s in front of me.  And right now, that’s you. Us.”

The sincerity in his eyes made my breathing seized. He wasn’t just saying the words to comfort me; he meant them.

“I don’t know how you can be so sure,” I said, my defences cracking.

His grip tightened slightly, not to restrain but to reassure. “I’ve already experienced life without you, and I don't want to live that life again. No matter what happens, we fight through this together.”

The ferry’s engines rumbled softly as we stood there, the world around us fading into the background. I turned back to the water, my hand still held in his, and let the silence stretch between us.

“I wasn’t always this person, you know,” I said after a moment.

“What do you mean?” Ethan inquired, his voice tinged with curiosity.

“I wasn’t always this...hard,” I admitted, the words tasting strange on my tongue. “There was a time when I believed in happy endings, in trusting people. But everything I’ve been through, everything I’ve seen—it’s changed me. Sometimes, I wonder if there’s even anything left of the person I used to be.”

Ethan was quiet for a moment, his gaze steady on me. “Do you think being strong means you’ve lost yourself?”

I nodded, unable to meet his eyes.

He released a gentle breath and moved closer until his shoulder touched mine. “I think the opposite. The person you are now—fierce, unrelenting, brave—is a reflection of who you have always been, and I admire that. You didn’t lose yourself, Lila. You adapted. That's why we are still here.”

I gave him a serious look at that moment and saw the truth in his words. He wasn’t romanticising me or sugarcoating anything. He was seeing me for who I was, scars and all, and accepting every part of it.

“You make it sound so simple,” I said, a faint smile tugging at my lips.

“It’s not simple,” he admitted. “But with you, it’s worth it. You’re worth it.”

The air between us shifted, heavier with unspoken emotions. I turned fully to face him, our hands still connected.

“You have changed me too,” I said softly. “Before you, I didn’t think I could trust anyone. Not fully. But you’ve shown me that it’s possible to let someone in, to have someone who stands with me instead of against me.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened, as if he were holding back the full force of his emotions. “I will always be with you, Lila. Even when the entire world turns against us, I will remain by your side.

His words broke something open inside me. His unwavering presence caused the fear, doubt, and carefully built walls to crumble.

I stepped closer, resting my forehead against his. “I don’t know how this will end, Ethan. I don’t know if we will win or if we’ll lose everything. But I know one thing for sure.”

“What’s that?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“I’m not afraid anymore,” I said, the words a surprise even to myself. And in that moment of whirlwind of emotions, I kissed him back, his tongue in my mouth, and mine in his.

The ferry’s horn blared in the distance, pulling us back to the present. Ethan leaned back slightly, his hands coming up to cradle my face.

“We’ll make it,” he said with quiet conviction. “We have already survived so much. And the syndicate? They don’t stand a chance against us.”

I nodded, the weight of his words sinking in. He wasn’t just giving me hope; he was reminding me of the strength we had together.

As the ferry approached the dock, the moment shifted, but the bond between us remained.

“Come on,” Ethan said, taking my hand as the ferry slowed to a stop. “We’ve got work to do.”

The next few hours were a rush of planning and preparation. Back at the safe house, Grayson worked tirelessly to decode more files, while Reyes handled logistics. Ethan and I moved in sync, our unspoken connection driving every decision.

But as the night wore on, a sense of quiet resolve settled over me. No matter what came next, I knew we were ready.

And at this point, I felt like we were truly unstoppable.
