Chapter 290

Chapter 290

The moment the lights returned, Kayla knew something had changed.

The observatory was exactly as it had been seconds earlier, yet the atmosphere felt different. Tension pressed against the walls like an invisible force, wrapping itself around everyone in the room. The warning messages still glowed across the monitors, but nobody seemed focused on them anymore.

Evelyn Navarro was gone.

One second she had been standing there, and the next she had vanished without a trace.

Marcus immediately began searching the surrounding corridors while Noor desperately checked the security feeds, but every camera showed nothing except empty hallways and flickering emergency lights.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Noor said, her fingers moving rapidly across the keyboard. “No doors opened. No exits were used.”

Arthur’s face darkened.

“Then she’s still inside the facility.”

Nobody liked that possibility.

Kayla stared at the space where Evelyn had been standing. Questions filled her mind faster than she could process them. Her mother was somehow connected to all of this. The founder system knew things it shouldn’t know. The Archive Keeper had been compromised. And now Lily Meyer, the woman she had buried years ago, was appearing in system records marked as active.

None of it felt real.

For the first time in a long while, uncertainty settled inside her.

A warm hand suddenly closed around her wrist.

Kayla looked up.

Jason.

His expression was unreadable.

“Come with me.”

She frowned slightly.

“Jason—”

“Now.”

There was something different in his voice.

Something she rarely heard.

Fear that wasn't for himself but for her.

Before anyone could object, he led her away from the others and into one of the private observation rooms overlooking the mountains. The door closed behind them, shutting out the noise and confusion of the observatory.

For several moments neither spoke.

Kayla watched him carefully.

Jason stood near the window, his broad shoulders tense beneath his dark jacket. The city lights in the distance reflected faintly against the glass, creating shadows across his face.

He looked angry..No, not angry but terrified.

The realization surprised her.

“You’ve been quiet,” she said softly.

Jason laughed bitterly.

A humorless sound.

“Do you know what I heard tonight?”

Kayla frowned.

“What?”

“I heard that the only way to activate the override might be your death.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that existed right before something shattered.

Silence filled the room.

Jason turned toward her.

His eyes were darker than she had ever seen them.

“When we first met, I wanted revenge.”

The words landed heavily between them.

Kayla remained silent.

“You were Gerald Meyer’s daughter.”

He took a slow breath.

“The daughter of the man who destroyed my family.”

A shadow crossed his face.

“I told myself you were a weapon. A tool. A means to an end.”

Kayla’s chest tightened.

They had come so far, yet hearing it still hurt.

Jason stepped closer.

“But somewhere along the way, everything changed.”

His voice became quieter.

More vulnerable.

“I stopped seeing Gerald when I looked at you.”

Kayla felt her heartbeat quicken.

“I started seeing you.”

The room seemed smaller suddenly.

More intimate.

More dangerous.

Jason laughed softly and shook his head.

“I hate that.”

A faint smile touched Kayla’s lips despite everything.

“You hate loving me?”

His gaze locked onto hers.

“More than anything.”

The honesty of the answer stole her breath.

Jason reached forward and gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

The gesture was simple.

Tender.

The exact opposite of the ruthless mafia king everyone feared.

“I spent years believing revenge would heal me.”

His fingers lingered against her cheek.

“It didn’t.”

Another pause.

“You did.”

Emotion tightened Kayla’s throat.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The world outside seemed far away.

The founders.

The Archive.

The conspiracies.

All of it faded.

There was only this.

Only them.

Jason lowered his forehead against hers.

A gesture so intimate it nearly broke her heart.

“If anyone thinks I’m going to let you die for some system,” he murmured, “they’ve lost their minds.”

Kayla closed her eyes briefly.

“Jason—”

“No.”

His voice hardened immediately.

“I mean it.”

She opened her eyes.

The determination she found there startled her.

“If the choice is between you and the founder system, I choose you.”

Silence.

“If the choice is between you and convergence, I choose you.”

His hand tightened around hers.

“If the choice is between you and the entire world…”

He stopped.

His jaw clenched.

Then he finished anyway.

“I choose you.”

The words struck deeper than any confession he had ever given her.

Because Jason Lugard was not a man who surrendered anything.

Not power.

Not control.

Not pride.

Yet here he was.

Giving all three away.

For her.

A tear slipped down Kayla’s cheek before she could stop it.

Jason immediately brushed it away.

“Don’t.”

She laughed weakly.

“Don’t what?”

“Cry.”

A small smile appeared on his lips.

“I don’t know how to fight tears.”

That earned an actual laugh from her.

The first genuine laugh she had managed all night.

Jason stared at her for a moment.

Then his expression softened.

“There she is.”

“What?”

“The woman I fell in love with.”

Kayla’s heart nearly stopped.

The words hung between them.

Simple.

Honest.

Powerful.

Jason looked surprised by his own confession.

But he didn’t take it back.

For once, neither of them hid behind pride.

Neither of them hid behind fear.

Slowly, Kayla reached for him.

Her fingers curled around his hand.

“I love you too.”

The admission came quietly.

Yet it felt louder than every alarm currently echoing through the observatory.

Jason closed his eyes briefly.

As if hearing those words physically hurt.

Or healed.

Perhaps both.

Then he kissed her.

Not desperately.

Not recklessly.

Gently.

A kiss filled with everything they had survived together.

The betrayal.

The revenge.

The lies.

The marriage.

The pain.

The love that had somehow grown from the ruins of all those things.

For a brief moment, nothing else existed.

Then the door burst open.

Both of them immediately pulled apart.

Charles stood in the doorway.

His expression was grim.

Very grim.

“We have a problem.”

Jason’s face hardened instantly.

“What happened?”

Charles looked directly at Kayla.

“The system found the Archive Keeper.”

The room became silent.

Every trace of warmth vanished.

Kayla’s stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?”

Charles swallowed.

“The identity has been unlocked.”

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Because they all knew what that meant.

Months of questions.

Generations of secrets.

Were finally about to be answered.

Charles looked between them.

Then delivered the revelation.

“The Archive Keeper isn’t a stranger.”

A pause.

“The Archive Keeper is someone connected to your family.”

Kayla felt ice spread through her veins.

Charles’ expression darkened further.

“And according to the founder records…”

He hesitated.

For the first time since she had met him, Charles looked genuinely shaken.

Then he finished.

“The Archive Keeper is your brother.”

The world stopped.

Because Kayla Meyer had spent her entire life believing she was an only child.
