Chapter 42

Chapter 42
It always has to be someone.
The door slammed shut, cutting off her screams. My chest heaved. That was another battle I had won over my obsessions.
"My lord, what do you intend to do with this human?"
Hmm… I took a deep breath.
I stayed silent for a long while, then I finally said the words that came to my mind. "We're getting close to the point where I'll toss her away."
It's just a matter of time.
"Good call," Darius chipped in.
It would be hard. But I had to do it.
This time around I won't look back.

Lilas POV
The dungeon was depressingly cold. The stone floor pressed hard against my butt through my torn dress.
It had been hours or was it days since I was thrown in here?
No one to talk to everywhere was just silent like a grave yard.
I had no way to track time in this darkness.
There was a lamp, but it was too low wouldn't even shine bright for days now, and the light too weak to change anything.
I sat in the corner, my knees pulled up and my arms wrapped tightly around them. The air smelled of damp rock and rust. My heart was heavy, like there was a huge stone on my chest.
I couldn't keep up with this torture, it had been so traumatizing.
All my efforts to be on Ronan's good side had gone in vain.
There's nothing I could do to make him change his good forsaking mind.
It was all a waste. I had been in a cage ever since I arrived here.
No proper food to eat or water to drink.
He hadn't come to check up on me.
It's high time I cut off my expectations with him.
When Ronan pulled me from that alley, I thought he had saved me but I was wrong. I became a prisoner.
His prisoner.
Long before I was dumped in this dungeon, I was already a prisoner.
But it took me a long time to notice.
My throat tightened and my eyes burned with tears. It was a shame that I got into this trouble trying to get Caius to help me.
What was I even thinking?
In as much as they're both not in good terms.
I won't think of doing that ever again.
But would I have needed Caius if Ronan wasn't a monster?
It was all his fault.
I thought of Ronan. His cold eyes and sharp voice haunted me. They played over and over in my head.
Why was he so cold now? He used to look at me like I was special.
But it's all gone now.
Now, I was nothing.
It's just like I never existed.
I now fit into the maids he looks around.
Did I do something wrong? I kept thinking.
I was and never was at fault.
My mind spun as I tried to think of answers. I couldn't think of anything for his sudden change in attitude toward me.
He'd been so kind ever since I was admitted to the hospital.
Since then everything about him just changed.
Maybe I defied him too much, or maybe I pushed him too far.
Maybe he has fallen completely out of love.
Maybe it wasn't my fault after all. He just got tired of me.
I hugged my knees tighter and exhaled.
Maras face kept flashing in my mind. It was not as sharp as it used to be. It had been so long since I saw her that I was struggling to clearly remember the last time we were together.
But sadly I couldn't, part of my memory reminded me of my days with Ronan.
I had failed her. By now, I should have helped her get back on her feet, but I failed to get Ronan to do my bidding.
Everything I tried failed. Even the letter to Caius didn't work out.
Nothing I ever did worked out as planned.
Caius had thrown it back and laughed in my face.
I'm very sure he was happy he'd treated me that way.
I was alone, locked away, with no way out. Nobody had to tell me. This was the end of the road. . .
The dungeon door creaked. I remained in my position. At intervals, someone would open the door and push my food in and I would grope around in the dark to find my meal.
I was badly treated her like a prisoner.
Footsteps further than ever. Usual they didn't get this close.
I looked up and my eyes strained in the dim light to see who it was. It took a while but I finally saw who it was. Vera.
What took her this look to recognize I haven't been around.
She was no where to be found after all the scandal I experienced.
Why is she here now.?
What does she want?.

I needed answers.
I had a whole lot of questions to ask her.
But what if I did scare her and she stopped coming.
She came at me and stopped a couple of steps away.
Are you okay?she asked.
I shook my head. "No. Im not.
"But what happened? How did you end up in here?"
Is she been serious right now, why did it take her this long to notice. I thought.
I swallowed, my throat suddenly going dry. Please leave Vera.
Youll get in trouble for being here. I heard the guards say nobody is allowed to visit."

Yes, but I pushed some buttons to be able to come here. Trust, Im not leaving you like this. You dont deserve this horrible situation.
I was a bit confused.
How was she able to do that.
My chest tightened. Why are you helping me?
 Aren't you loyal to Ronan?"
Yes I am.
But you see, I can't afford to see you like this.
It's honestly not fair.
I'll try to talk to Ronan to see if he could reason or see some sense into what I have to tell him.
"I know you're a good person. Yes, I'm loyal to the king and Ill talk to him. I will get you out.
Don't be scared Lila I'm in this with you.
You'd appeal to Ronan for me?
Are you sure about that?.
You mean you'll do all that for me?.
Ill try. Hes stubborn as you well know, but Ill push.
"Thanks, Vera. If you pull this off, I will never forget it as long as I live."
That's a promise.
