INTO THE DARKNESS

The darkness was absolute.

For a moment, Lena couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe. The world was swallowed whole in an instant, the familiar surroundings of the penthouse wiped away by the sudden, suffocating blackness. Her heart pounded in her chest, a frantic rhythm that filled her ears as she reached out blindly, searching for Aiden.

“Aiden!” she gasped, her voice trembling in the pitch-black.

There was no response. Just silence.

And then—

A scuffle. The sound of bodies colliding. A sharp, metallic thud.

Lena’s heart leapt into her throat. “Aiden?” she called again, louder this time, her voice laced with fear.

A hand suddenly grabbed her wrist, strong and firm. Lena gasped, her body tensing as she instinctively tried to pull away.

“It’s me,” Aiden’s voice came, low and urgent in the darkness.

Lena’s breath caught, relief flooding through her as she gripped his hand tightly. “What’s happening? Who—?”

Before she could finish, there was a sudden flash of light—brief and blinding. The figure Aiden had slammed against the wall was gone, and in their place, Lena caught a fleeting glimpse of something else. A shadow moving swiftly through the room, slipping deeper into the penthouse like a phantom.

And just as quickly as it appeared, the light vanished, plunging them back into darkness.

Aiden swore under his breath, pulling Lena close to him. “He’s inside,” he whispered, his voice tight with tension. “Marcus is already inside.”

Lena’s stomach twisted with fear, her mind racing. “But how? How could he—?”

“I don’t know,” Aiden cut her off, his voice strained. He was breathing hard, his grip on her hand tight as he fumbled through the darkness. “But it doesn’t matter. We have to get out of here. Now.”

Lena’s pulse quickened, her eyes darting around the black void that surrounded them. Her senses were on high alert, every sound amplified by the oppressive silence. She could hear the soft creak of the floorboards beneath their feet, the faint hum of the city beyond the windows, and then—just barely—a whisper of movement behind them.

“Aiden…” Lena whispered, her voice trembling. “He’s close.”

Aiden didn’t respond. Instead, he pulled her toward the hallway, his steps quick and silent, his body tense as if preparing for an attack at any moment. Lena’s heart raced, every nerve in her body screaming at her to run, but the darkness was disorienting. It was as if the walls were closing in, the space around them warping in the absence of light.

Suddenly, a crash echoed through the penthouse, the sound of glass shattering somewhere nearby. Lena flinched, her grip on Aiden’s hand tightening as her breath came in sharp, shallow gasps.

“He’s trying to herd us,” Aiden muttered under his breath, his voice grim. “He’s trying to push us toward the back of the penthouse.”

Lena’s blood ran cold. “What do we do?”

Aiden’s hand tightened around hers. “We don’t play his game,” he said, his voice low and determined. “We go the other way.”

Without another word, Aiden pulled Lena sharply to the left, toward the stairwell that led to the building’s lower floors. Lena stumbled after him, her heart pounding in her chest as they moved quickly through the darkened hallway, the sound of their footsteps almost deafening in the silence.

But just as they reached the stairwell door, something slammed into Aiden from the side.

Lena screamed as Aiden was ripped from her grasp, his body crashing into the wall with a sickening thud. She stumbled backward, her body trembling with fear as she blindly reached out for him in the darkness.

“Aiden!” she cried, her voice breaking.

There was a low growl, the sound of a struggle—a grunt of pain from Aiden—and then, out of nowhere, the lights flickered back on.

Lena blinked against the sudden brightness, her eyes struggling to adjust. When her vision cleared, she saw Aiden pinned against the wall, his gun knocked from his hand and skidding across the floor. Standing over him was Marcus.

Lena’s heart stopped.

Marcus was taller than she remembered, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the room. His dark hair was slicked back, and his eyes—cold, calculating—were locked on Aiden with a terrifying intensity. His lips curved into a cruel smile as he leaned in close, whispering something in Aiden’s ear that Lena couldn’t hear.

Aiden’s face was a mask of pain, blood trickling from a cut above his eyebrow. But even in his weakened state, he glared up at Marcus with defiance, his chest heaving as he struggled to break free.

“Let him go!” Lena shouted, her voice shaking as she took a step forward.

Marcus’s eyes flicked to her, his smile widening. “Ah, Lena,” he drawled, his voice smooth and mocking. “Always the brave one.”

Lena’s stomach twisted with fear, but she forced herself to stand tall, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. “This ends tonight, Marcus,” she said, her voice trembling but fierce. “You don’t get to hurt us anymore.”

Marcus chuckled darkly, his eyes never leaving hers. “Oh, Lena,” he said softly, almost tenderly. “You still don’t understand, do you? This never ends. Not for you. Not for him.”

Before Lena could react, Marcus reached into his jacket, pulling out a gleaming silver blade. He held it up to the light, the sharp edge catching the glow of the overhead bulbs.

Aiden’s eyes widened, his body tensing as Marcus pressed the blade against his throat.

“No!” Lena screamed, her heart lurching in her chest as she lunged forward.

But Marcus was faster.

With a swift, brutal motion, Marcus shoved Aiden to the ground, the blade slicing across his arm as he fell. Aiden let out a strangled cry of pain, clutching his arm as blood seeped through his fingers.

Lena froze, her breath catching in her throat as she watched in horror. Her mind screamed at her to move, to do something, but her body refused to obey.

Marcus turned to her, wiping the blood from the blade with a slow, deliberate motion. “You’re going to watch him bleed,” he said, his voice calm, almost pleasant. “And then, when he’s gone, I’ll take you.”

Lena’s vision blurred with tears, her heart pounding in her chest as fear and fury warred within her. “You won’t touch him again,” she whispered, her voice shaking with rage.

Marcus raised an eyebrow, his smile widening. “And how do you plan to stop me?”

Lena didn’t think. She didn’t hesitate.

She grabbed the nearest object—a heavy lamp from the side table—and threw it with all her strength.

The lamp shattered against Marcus’s head with a deafening crash, the force of the blow sending him stumbling backward. For a split second, he looked stunned, his hand reaching up to touch the blood now trickling down his forehead.

And then his eyes darkened with fury.

“You little—”

Before Marcus could finish, Aiden surged forward from the ground, tackling him to the floor. The two men crashed together in a violent tangle of limbs, Marcus’s blade skidding across the floor as they fought.

Lena scrambled to her feet, her heart racing as she searched for something—anything—that could help.

But just as her fingers closed around the handle of Aiden’s discarded gun, Marcus broke free from Aiden’s grip, his eyes wild with rage.

He lunged at Aiden, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against the wall once more. Aiden gasped, his hands clawing at Marcus’s arm as he struggled to breathe.

And then—

There was a gunshot.

The sound echoed through the penthouse, deafening in the silence that followed.

For a moment, no one moved.

Marcus slowly released his grip on Aiden, his eyes wide with shock as he looked down at his chest. Blood blossomed across his shirt, spreading in a dark, wet stain.

He staggered backward, his hand reaching up to touch the wound, his expression disbelieving.

Lena stood frozen, the gun still raised in her trembling hands.

Marcus’s eyes flicked to hers, his lips parting as if to speak.

But no words came.

He collapsed to the floor, motionless.

Lena’s breath came in ragged gasps, her heart pounding in her ears as she stared at Marcus’s lifeless body. The gun slipped from her hands, clattering to the floor as her legs gave out beneath her.

She sank to the ground, her entire body trembling.

Aiden was beside her in an instant, his arms wrapping around her as he pulled her into his chest. “It’s over,” he whispered, his voice raw with emotion. “It’s over.”

But even as he said the words, Lena couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly, terribly wrong.

Because in the silence that followed the gunshot, she heard something else.

A soft, almost imperceptible sound.

The sound of footsteps.

Coming from somewhere deep within the penthouse.
