Prelude To The Night It All Happened (Before The Pregnancy Scare)

Marco pov
After our return from the safehouse, things were a little settled. Giovanni and I were still dealing with Kristoff's involvement in riling up other parties against us.
I wasn't going to lie, he was getting on my last nerve. And I couldn't wait to settle this issue between us and live my life the way I wanted.
“What should be our next course of action?”
“I don't really know. But we can try to reach out to other organisations and get them on our side.” Side talks were bad, it caused a lot of problems, problems that we didn't need right now.
“Okay, that doesn't sound bad. What do we do about Riccardo?”
He had a serious expression on his face as he switched to a more serious topic.
“We watch him. The surveillance team is still on him right?”
“Yeah. And also his twin brother, Leonardo. He could be on to the plan too. It’s better to be safe than sorry.” Giovanni nodded.
“Good.” The twins were like day and night. Leonardo was the lighter version, while Riccardo was the darker one. But I knew not to judge a book by its cover, both grew up in a violent setting. And from my past interactions with them, it was obvious they both had something in common, they were both dangerous men.
“And if they find out that he's against us?”
And that was a topic I was avoiding, I wasn't ready to open that can of worms.

“Then we do what's good for the family.” I replied.
“Okay.” Giovanni watched me with an unknown expression.
“Wipe that look off your face.” I told him slapping the back of his head as I walked past him.
He flipped me off, muttering what I knew would be a stink word, according to what Alyssa refers to curses.
I didn't know what Riccardo was doing, but if I found out he was betraying the family or worse working with Kristoff, he was going to pay.
But I was conflicted because Sofia was my wife and she was also his sister. My relationship with Sofia was improving, I don't want to mess up the progress that we have made.
Would her brother's carelessness affect my marriage with her?

After freshening up, I checked my emails and retired to my bed.
“Damn it.” It was a little strange sleeping by myself after sharing a bed on most nights with Sofia.
I missed the soft feel of her body against mine, how we aligned like Yin and Yang.
Since we got back, her recurring nightmares had stopped making an appearance, so we haven't really shared a bed for days.
And I couldn't look for a good excuse to go to her room.
I turned from side to side on my bed. I was so restless, I couldn't even drift off after I forced myself to close my eyes.
“Fuck this.” I stood up and threw on a light white vest.
Marco De Santis couldn't sleep alone because he had started getting used to his wife's presence. Giovanni will have a big laugh if he ever hears of this.
I exited my room and made my way to Sofia's room hoping she hasn't slept off yet.

My heart was beating so fast and I considered retracing my steps but I held firm. I could just put it on checking up on her.
“The worst thing she can say is no.” I took a deep breath before I knocked. I heard her voice.
“Who's that?”
“It's me, Marco.”
“Alright, give me a minute.” With each step that she took, my composure crumbled like damp tissue.
All my composure flew when she opened the door. I was faced with her beautiful soft features, her lips parted in surprise, like she didn't really she didn't really expect to see me here.
“Sorry, did I wake you up?” She didn't look like she had been sleeping.
Was she still battling with her nightmares?

“No, no. I could barely sleep. I was literally forcing myself to go to sleep when you knocked.”
“Oh ok.” I noticed that she was still standing blocking the entrance and not offering for me to go in.
As I looked closer, she had a deep flush on her cheeks. Was she fine?
Is she running temperature? My concern spiked through the roof. Her breaths came out elevated.
“Sofia, are you ok?”
“Hmmn, yeah. Why are you asking?” She shifted slightly on her foot like she was restless.
“You look flushed.” Her eyes went down and she bit her lip in? What was going on?
“I'm fine. I think it's the heat. It's getting to me.” She mumbled the last bit to herself.

“Oh ok.”
We keep silent for an awkward minute just staring at each other before Sofia broke it.
“So do you need anything?” She asked.
“Um, yeah.” I scratched the back of my neck, I was so nervous.
“What's it then?” Her tone was neutral.
This was what I was scared of. I hope she doesn't turn me down and think I'm weird.
“I wanted to check in with you regarding your nightmares, if you're comfortable. Like if you need me to keep you company.”
“Oh.” She adjusted her silk rope.
“Yeah.” I nodded.
“That's so sweet of you.” Her soft smile made my heart lurch in excitement.
“Yeah.”
Another awkward silence ensued between us.
“So do you want me to keep you company? You know, to help scare away those nightmare monsters.” I asked her with bated breath. If she turned me down, I would respect her decision but it would be a deep blow to my ego. This was the first time that I was reaching out to a lady I liked.

“Hmmn, yes. Pardon my manners.” She reluctantly stepped to the side.
I observed her mannerisms, she looked uncomfortable like she didn't want me to come in.
“Sofia, are you sure you want me to come in? It's fine if you don't want,” I stepped back.
“No.” Her hand came up landing on my chest. Her abrupt answer took me by surprise.
“No, It's fine.” Her hand patted down.
I looked at her hand on my chest. I looked at her, she was also staring at it.
The sight was a very stimulating one, her small soft hand looked so feminine on my hard chest.
“Sorry, it was just a reflex action.” Her hand dropped and I missed that little bit of contact.
“You can come in.”

Inside her room, the light was dimmed, the curtains were drawn closed. My brows furrowed in confusion, I thought she said that she was feeling hot. Then why were her curtains closed? The air conditioner was on sleep mode.
I sat down on the bed since that was the only option available. She sat down beside me.
“So,”
“So.”
“Are you nervous?” I broke the ice.
“About?”
“I'm just asking, you know, having me in your space.”
“Maybe a little.”
She looked distressed.
Why was she distressed?
“Is something bothering you?”
“I,I.” She sputtered.
Something was definitely wrong.
As I adjusted my position to face her, my hand touched something on the bed which fell and thudded on the floor.
“Oh my gosh.” She exclaimed.
“What's that?” I bent down to help her pick it up since I was the one close to it.

“No, don't. I can pick it up myself. It's nothing.” I sensed a bit of panic in her voice.
“No, it is no stress.” Was she hiding something?
“No, don't.”
I should have listened to her warning. Or should I not have?
What I saw was enough to put me in a state of shock, so thick I remained in that bent position.
“Oh my gosh.” She buried her face in her hands.
