Caught in a Scandalous Web
Isabel and I quickly adjusted our appearances, our faces flushed with embarrassment as we exchanged hurried glances. With practiced ease, I lifted her into the saddle behind me, her arms wrapping securely around my waist as we prepared for a hasty retreat. The castle grounds were unsettlingly quiet as we rode back to the courtyard, the night cloaking us in darkness. Despite our efforts to remain inconspicuous.
“No one saw us,” I whispered to Isabel.
“You are wrong,” a voice cut through the silence, sending a jolt through both of us.
I turned to see my father stepping out from the shadows, his figure imposing against the dim light. His presence cast a pall over the courtyard. Without a word, Isabel and I dismounted, following him with our hearts pounding in fear of what was to come. I helped Isabel out of the saddle. Her cheeks flushed crimson. My father led us to his study, slamming the door behind him. The sharp echo felt like a thunderclap. His gaze pierced through me, filled with disappointment and frustration.
"Andrew, how could you be so careless?"
"Father, I was returning from the docks, and we decided to go for a ride," I replied quickly, scrambling for an excuse.
“Alexander, you were unchaperoned. Do you know how this looks?”
I stood silent, shame settling over me as Isabel remained tense beside me, waiting for the consequences of our reckless actions.
“Father, I swear, nothing inappropriate happened,” I said, trying to convey the truth in my voice.
His expression, however, did not soften.
"Even if that were true, appearances matter, Andrew. If word of this reaches anyone, both of your reputations will be tarnished. Everything that you have worked for will be erased in a single moment of carelessness.”
His next words hit me like a blow.
“You will be married tomorrow.”
I froze.
“Tomorrow? Father, I see no need to rush our marriage. Nobody else saw us.”
“Can you prove that nobody else saw you? Nathan is marrying Lady Amelia at the end of the week, and you will wed Isabel before then. This is not up for discussion. You have put me in a difficult position. Your mother is already cross with me as is the council. I will not have people questioning your virtue or actions as the next king and queen.”
My protests died in my throat as his stern gaze silenced me. Isabel and I exchanged a glance, hers filled with resignation, mine with turmoil.
“There is much to prepare. Return to your chambers. Both of you. I expect to see both of you in the church on time tomorrow. If you disobey there will be severe consequences.”
We turned to leave. His voice stopped me cold.
“Before you go, where did you get those cuts and bruises? Your shirt is stained with blood. Was there trouble at the docks?”
I hesitated.
“Sparring accident,” I lied quickly. “Missed a parry.”
“Very well,” he replied, though I could sense the lingering doubt in his eyes. “You are dismissed. Alexander, I expect you to respectfully walk Isabel to her chambers then you are to report promptly to your own chambers.”
Isabel hurried from the room, tears glistening in her eyes. My chest tightened with guilt as I followed her, desperate to ease her distress.
“Isabel, I am so sorry. I should not have put you in this position. I was not thinking clearly. I was careless and I am sorry.”
To my surprise, she met my gaze, her expression softer than I expected.
“Andrew, I am not angry. I have accepted this. I look forward to tomorrow, whatever challenges it brings.”
Her strength stirred something in me. With a tender kiss on her hand, I watched her disappear into her chambers. I made my way to my room. Dawn broke. The castle buzzed with activity. Servants rushed about, preparing for the day’s events, their footsteps echoing through the stone halls. In the grand hall, decorators adorned the space with flowers and ribbons, transforming it into a vibrant display of color and elegance. The air was filled with the scent of fresh blooms and the glow of flickering candles.
In my chambers, I stood before the mirror, adjusting the crisp white collar of my shirt, my reflection of a king on the rise. I smoothed down my tailored jacket, each movement grounding me in the reality of the day ahead. My thoughts drifted to Isabel. I suddenly realized that today, after years of longing, I would finally marry the woman I loved. I approached my ornate wardrobe and carefully selected my wedding attire. The midnight-blue velvet coat shimmered with delicate silver embroidery, a stark contrast to the pristine white linen beneath. I donned each piece. The significance of the moment settled over me, a mantle of responsibility and purpose.
With one last glance in the mirror, I straightened my shoulders and stepped out, making my way to the church. The towering spires loomed overhead as I crossed the threshold, my heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves. Inside, the whispers of guests filled the air, blending with the soft strains of music from the organ. The golden light of candles cast a warm glow over the pews adorned with flowers. I walked down the aisle. My parents stood at the end, their faces glowing with pride. My mother’s eyes welled with emotion as she clasped my hand.
“You look handsome,” she whispered, her voice thick with love.
My father nodded; his approval was silent but profound.
“You are ready for this, son.”
I drew strength from them as we approached the front of the church. The anticipation built within me as I took my place at the altar, standing beside the priest. The music swelled, and I turned, my breath catching in my throat as I laid eyes on Isabel, radiant and breathtaking. The moment had arrived.
