A Courtly Wedding
I stood at the altar. The soft murmur of guests and the gentle rustling of fabric barely registered as I focused on the moment unfolding. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting vibrant, kaleidoscopic patterns across the floor. The air was heavy with the fragrance of fresh flowers, roses, lilies, and baby’s breath, lending the scene an otherworldly enchantment.
The organist began the first notes of the wedding march. A hush fell over the congregation. My gaze snapped to the back of the aisle, where Isabel appeared. She moved with a grace that left me breathless, her dress a masterpiece of lace and satin that clung to her form with elegance. A long train followed behind her, gliding smoothly over the floor. A delicate veil softened the outline of her face. Through the gossamer, her eyes met mine, steady and bright, locked on me as if nothing else existed.
Her steps were slow and deliberate, each one a testament to the solemnity of the occasion. Her father walked beside her, his expression a mixture of pride and bittersweet emotion. I saw it in his eyes. The pain of letting go, but also the joy of this moment. Isabel held a bouquet of white roses and greenery, its purity a striking contrast against the lace of her dress.
She approached. My breath caught, and my heart swelled with a deep, overwhelming love. I could feel the lump in my throat, and I blinked away the sudden sting of tears. The closer she came, the clearer her features became, bringing the dreamlike quality of the moment into sharper focus. When she finally reached me, her father lifted her veil, revealing her radiant face, her smile filled with promises of the future.
For that instant, the world narrowed to just the two of us. Isabel’s hand slipped into mine, cool but trembling with the same nerves I felt. I tightened my grip, silently reassuring her. Together we stood at the altar, surrounded by family and friends, yet utterly wrapped in our bubble of love.
The officiant, a man with a gentle smile, began to speak. His voice was warm, resonating through the space.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness and celebrate the union of Andrew and Isabel in holy matrimony."
His words filled the room, but my attention never wavered from her. Every sentence seemed to echo the depth of the commitment we were about to make, binding our hearts and futures together.
"Marriage is a sacred institution," the officiant continued, "a covenant not entered lightly but with reverence and dedication.”
“It is a bond that unites two souls, where love is nurtured, where each partner supports and cherishes the other."
He turned to me.
"Andrew, do you take Isabel to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“To have and to hold from this day forward?”
“For better or for worse?”
“For richer or for poorer?”
“In sickness and in health?”
“To love and to cherish, until death do you part?"
The weight of the moment settled on me. I looked deeply into Isabel’s eyes. Those eyes filled with trust, love, and certainty.
My voice did not falter as I answered, "I do."
The officiant then asked Isabel the same, and she responded, her voice steady but brimming with emotion, "I do."
With that, the rings were brought forward by Charlotte, the light glinting off the simple bands. I slid the ring onto Isabel’s finger.
"With this ring, I thee wed."
Isabel’s hands trembled slightly as she placed the ring on my finger, repeating the same vow.
"With this ring, I thee wed."
The officiant raised his hands in blessing, his voice full of solemnity.
"By the power vested in me by the state and the church, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
“You may kiss the bride."
I leaned in and kissed Isabel. It was soft, and gentle, a kiss filled with the promise of a lifetime together. The congregation erupted into applause, a joyous sound that mixed with the peal of the church bells ringing in celebration.
Hand in hand, we turned to face our guests as husband and wife. The overwhelming joy of the moment surged through me as we walked back down the aisle, surrounded by love and warmth, ready to embark on our new life together.
We stepped out into the courtyard. The grand wooden doors of the chapel creaked open, revealing the vibrant celebration awaiting us. The castle grounds were alive with music, trumpets blaring in triumph, minstrels playing lively tunes on lutes and flutes. The late afternoon sun bathed everything in golden light, casting long shadows over the cobblestones.
We descended the stone steps, greeted by the cheers of townsfolk and nobles alike. Children, dressed in their finest, scattered flower petals at our feet while villagers raised their goblets in a toast to the newlyweds. The scent of roasting meats and fresh bread filled the air, mingling with the floral fragrances from earlier, promising the grand feast to come.
A procession formed to lead us to the great hall. Torches lined the path, their flames flickering in the gentle breeze. Inside the hall, the sight was one of opulent splendor. Long tables overflowed with roasted boar, pheasant, and venison, surrounded by platters of fruit, cheese, and sweet pastries. Goblets of wine and mead sparkled in the torchlight, casting a warm, festive glow over the room.
We took our places at the high table, overlooking our guests. The walls were adorned with banners of our families' crests, and tapestries depicting scenes of romance and chivalry added to the sense of history and tradition. My father rose, raising his goblet high.
"To Prince Andrew and Lady Isabel," he called, his voice ringing out.
"May their union bring peace and prosperity to our lands, and may their love grow ever stronger, like the roots of the ancient oaks in our forests!"
The hall echoed his words, the sound swelling into a harmonious chorus. The feast began, and Isabel and I exchanged quiet words and loving glances, surrounded by the joy of those we held dear. The evening wore on, minstrels sang ballads, jesters performed, and dancers twirled in vibrant costumes, filling the hall with laughter and life. When it was time for our first dance, I led Isabel to the center of the floor, and together we moved as one, our love evident in every step.
Later, as the night deepened and the torches burned low, we slipped away from the revelry, finding solace in the quiet of the castle gardens. The stars shone brightly above us; their light reflected in the still waters of the garden pond. I wrapped my cloak around Isabel, pulling her close.
"This night has been like a dream," I whispered.
She looked up at me, her eyes gleaming with love.
"It is only the beginning of our story," she said softly.
We kissed, and in that moment, the future felt limitless, full of promise and love.
