Flora's POV
Before I could respond, he picked up the dirty sheets and walked out of the room, leaving me standing there, stunned and confused.
The door clicked shut behind him, and I sank onto the bed, my mind a game of chess. What did he mean by that? Could I trust him?
I didn’t know. But one thing was certain: Jonathan wasn’t as simple as he seemed.
After he left, the air in the room felt heavier, as if his presence lingered like an unseen specter. I stood there for a long moment, still processing his words. I’m on your side. What did that even mean? And why did it feel like I was being pulled deeper into a web of shadows and secrets?
I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. There was no point in dwelling on it now. Exhaustion tugged at my body, and I decided to rest. I climbed onto the massive bed and positioned myself at the far left corner, facing away from the door.
The light from the hallway streamed faintly through the crack under the door, and I turned my back to it, hoping to block it out. I needed to avoid any distractions. The muffled sounds of the guards moving outside echoed faintly, but I tried to ignore them.
Lying there, I curled into myself, clutching the towel tightly around my body like a shield. Sleep didn’t come easily. Every sound made my heart race—a distant footstep, a soft creak, even my own breathing. My mind refused to quiet, spinning with a chaotic blend of thoughts.
Jonathan’s cryptic behavior. The necklace and how it had shifted. The weight of Lucian’s control. And the shadowy unknown that seemed to loom over everything.
I closed my eyes tightly, willing myself to relax, but it was no use. Every time I started to drift off, a noise or a flash of memory would jolt me awake.
Finally, after what felt like hours, my body succumbed to the fatigue. I fell into a deep, restless sleep, my dreams pulling me into their grasp.
In the dream, I stood in a vast, moonlit field. The grass shimmered under the pale glow, stretching endlessly in all directions. A soft breeze whispered through the air, carrying with it a sense of both peace and unease.
Then she appeared.
Selene, the Moon Goddess.
Her presence was overwhelming, yet calming at the same time. She radiated an ethereal beauty, her silvery hair flowing like liquid light, and her eyes held the wisdom of ages. She regarded me with a mixture of curiosity and intensity, as if she could see through every layer of my being.
“Flora,” she said, her voice soft yet commanding. “You have come far, but your journey is far from over.”
I took a step closer, my heart pounding. “Why am I here? What do you want from me?”
Selene tilted her head, her gaze drifting to the necklace around my neck. “You are on a mission, child. But tell me, how is it going?”
I frowned, unsure how to answer. “I... I’m trying. It’s difficult. Lucian is... he’s a monster. But I have a plan.”
She nodded, a hint of approval in her eyes. “Good. You must continue to fight, even when it feels impossible. But tell me, Flora, how far has the vial progressed?”
My hand instinctively went to the pendant. “The vial?”
“Yes,” she said, her tone cryptic. “The necklace you wear is more than a simple adornment. It holds the key to your destiny. Pay attention to its movement, for it will guide you.”
I looked down at the necklace, confusion and curiosity swirling in my mind. “What does it mean? Why does it move?”
Selene smiled faintly, but her expression remained unreadable. “In time, you will understand.”
I hesitated before asking my next question. “Who is Lucian? Who is Dahlia? And... what about Jonathan?”
At the mention of their names, Selene’s expression darkened slightly. “I cannot tell you that, Flora. To reveal too much would disrupt the threads of fate.”
“Then how am I supposed to know who to trust?” I demanded, frustration bubbling to the surface.
The Moon Goddess stepped closer, her gaze piercing. “Trust your instincts. Trust who you wish to trust, and distrust who you do not. But be warned, Flora—Lucian is not the only enemy you will face.”
Her words sent a chill down my spine. “What do you mean? Who else is there?”
She shook her head. “That is for you to discover. But remember, child, you are stronger than you realize. And the choices you make now will shape not only your future but the future of those around you.”
I swallowed hard, her words weighing heavily on me. “Jonathan... he seems like an ally. I don’t know why, but I feel like I can trust him.”
Selene’s expression softened slightly. “Perhaps you can. But tread carefully, Flora. Not all allies remain loyal.”
Her cryptic advice left me with more questions than answers, but before I could say anything else, she began to fade. The moonlight around her grew brighter, enveloping her figure in a radiant glow.
“Wait!” I called out. “I have more questions!”
But it was too late. She was gone, and the dream dissolved into darkness.
I woke with a start, my heart racing and my breath coming in short gasps. My mind was still reeling from the dream, the Moon Goddess’s words echoing in my ears.
I sat up, clutching the necklace tightly in my hand. It felt warm against my skin, as if it held a life of its own. I stared at it, trying to make sense of everything Selene had said.
But then I froze.
Someone was watching me.
I turned my head slowly, my heart leaping into my throat when I saw him.
Jonathan.
He was standing at the foot of the bed, his dark eyes fixed on me. He said nothing, but the intensity of his gaze sent a shiver down my spine.
“How long have you been there?” I asked, my voice trembling.
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he took a step closer, his movements slow and deliberate.
“Long enough,” he said finally, his voice low and even.
The way he said it made my blood run cold. He had been watching me while I slept. The thought was both unsettling and terrifying.
“What do you want?” I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady.
Jonathan tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable. “Just making sure you’re... safe.”
“Well, I am as you can see.” I spat out.
“And there's something else.”
My body chilled instantly, noticing how calm his face had gotten. He was about to reveal something.
“What is it, Jonathan?” I asked, speaking in a lower tone.
“I have a way for you to escape Lucian.”
