First Lessons
"Your ancestor?" Lucien's voice echoed in the dark stairs. "That's impossible!"
Clara pulled Lucien down the stairs, away from Dominic's reaching hands. The secret tunnel closed behind them, sealing them in darkness.
"Nothing is impossible anymore," Clara whispered. Her locket glowed, lighting their way through the tight tunnel. Erynn walked ahead, her red hair noticeable in the dim light.
"How is Dominic your ancestor?" Lucien asked as they rushed through the passage.
"I don't know exactly," Clara said. "But when he spoke, a memory came back to me—from my first life in 1642. I saw him holding a baby. My mother, I think."
The tunnel stopped at a small wooden door. Erynn pushed it open, and they stepped out into a part of the forest Clara had never seen before. Giant trees with silver leaves surrounded them. The ground sparkled with tiny blue flowers.
"The sacred grove," Erynn said. "We'll be safe here for a while. Dominic can't enter this place."
Clara sank down onto a flat rock, her head spinning with all she had learned. Lucien paced uncomfortably, his silver eyes scanning the trees.
"We need a plan," he said. "The three moons align tomorrow night."
"First," Erynn said firmly, "Clara needs to learn to control her powers. She's no use to any world if she can't handle her magic."
Clara looked up. "I don't even know what I can do."
"You're a bridge between worlds," Erynn explained. "You have vampire blood from Dominic's line, witch blood from Isolde's, and your human spirit. You can draw power from all three realms."
"Like when I stopped that vampire in the dungeon," Clara said, remembering how she had frozen him in place.
"Exactly," Erynn nodded. "But that was just fear and instinct. You need control."
Lucien stopped walking. "I can help with that. I've watched you learn to control your powers in past lives."
Clara's eyes widened. "You remember my training?"
"Parts of it," Lucien said. "Enough to start."
Erynn looked up at the sky. "I need to check on the moon alignment. I'll be back before dawn." She gave Clara a serious look. "Practice hard. We don't have much time."
After Erynn left, Lucien sat across from Clara on another rock. "First, you need to understand what's happening inside you."
"I'm scared," Clara admitted. "What if I hurt someone again?"
"You won't," Lucien said gently. "I'll make sure of it."
He held out his hands, palms up. "Put your hands on mine."
Clara paused. "What will happen?"
"I'll show you how to feel the power in your blood," Lucien explained. "It's similar to how vampires learn to control their hunger."
Slowly, Clara put her hands on top of Lucien's. His skin was cool against hers. Immediately, a warm tingle spread up her arms.
"Close your eyes," Lucien said softly. "Feel the energy moving inside you. It's like a river flowing through your body."
Clara closed her eyes. At first, she felt nothing odd. Then, gradually, she became aware of something moving under her skin—a current of warmth flowing with her heartbeat.
"I feel it," she whispered.
"Good," Lucien said. "Now, try to direct it. Send it to your fingertips."
Clara focused, picturing the warm energy flowing down her arms to her hands. Her fingers began to tingle and grow hot.
"It's working," she said happily.
"Now open your eyes," Lucien directed.
Clara opened her eyes and gasped. Her fingertips were glowing silver, just like her eyes did when her power triggered.
"I'm doing it!" she said.
Lucien smiled. "Now, try to pull it back. Draw the energy back into your center."
Clara focused, imagining the silver light flowing back up her arms. Slowly, the glow faded from her fingers.
"That's perfect," Lucien said. "Control means being able to call your power when you need it, and put it away when you don't."
They practiced for hours. Clara learned to move the energy through different parts of her body. She could make her eyes glow at will now, and even create a small silver flame in her palm.
"You're learning faster than ever before," Lucien noticed.
"It feels familiar," Clara said. "Like my body remembers even if my mind doesn't."
As night fell, Lucien taught her a more tough lesson. "Now we'll try something harder," he said. "I want you to reach out with your senses. Feel the life around you."
Clara frowned. "I don't understand."
"As a bridge between worlds, you can sense all three realms," Lucien explained. "Try to feel the forest, the animals, the magic in this place."
Clara closed her eyes again and reached out with her mind. At first, there was nothing. Then, suddenly, she gasped as awareness flooded her. She could feel everything—the trees breathing, small animals moving through the underbrush, the pulse of magic running through the ground beneath them.
"It's amazing," she breathed. "I can feel it all."
"Now," Lucien said, "take my hands again and tell me what you sense."
Clara reached for Lucien's open hands. As their fingers touched, something unexpected happened. A flash of light burst behind her eyes. Images poured into her mind.
She saw herself in a beautiful dress, dancing with Lucien in a big ballroom. Her dress was blue silk, her hair piled high with pearls weaved through it. Lucien wore a black coat with silver buttons. They were laughing, spinning together under sparkling chandeliers.
"I love you," Lucien whispered in her ear. "In this life and all others."
"Forever," she promised in return.
Clara jerked her hands away, gasping. "Did you see that?"
Lucien's eyes were wide. "The ballroom in Paris. 1789."
"We were dancing," Clara said. "I was wearing blue."
"You died three days later," Lucien said softly. "The revolution came. They took you away."
Clara shivered. "Why did we see that memory?"
"Our blood recognized each other," Lucien revealed. "When our powers connect, the past surfaces."
Clara stood up and walked a few steps away. "I don't know if I can handle remembering all my deaths."
"It gets easier," Lucien said, though his voice held little confidence.
Clara turned back to him. "How do you bear it? Watching me die over and over?"
Lucien's face filled with pain. "I don't. Each time breaks me a little more."
Clara moved back to him and, after a moment's pause, touched his face gently. "I'm sorry."
As her fingers brushed his face, another memory flashed:
Blood on stone. Her blood. Lucien holding her, crying, as life drained from her body.
"Don't leave me," he begged. "Not again."
"Find me," she whispered with her last breath. "I'll come back to you."
Clara pulled her hand away, tears filling her eyes. "So much pain," she whispered. "So many goodbyes."
Lucien looked away. "Maybe it would be better if we broke the cycle. If you lived a normal human life, free from all this."
"Is that what you want?" Clara asked, hurt in her voice.
"What I want doesn't matter," Lucien said. "I want you to be safe."
"And what about the three worlds?" Clara asked. "What about Dominic and Isolde? What about our curse?"
Before Lucien could answer, the ground beneath them shook. The silver leaves on the trees began to fall, spinning in a sudden wind.
"Something's wrong," Lucien said, standing up. "Erynn should have been back by now."
A low growl came from the shadows between the trees. Glowing eyes appeared in the darkness—dozens of them, surrounding the grove.
"What are they?" Clara whispered, moving closer to Lucien.
"Shadow wolves," Lucien said sadly. "Dominic's hunters. But they shouldn't be able to enter this place unless..."
"Unless what?" Clara asked.
Lucien's face went pale. "Unless Erynn let them in."
The wolves stepped into the light—black animals with smoke for fur and teeth like daggers. They circled closer, growling.
"Stay behind me," Lucien directed, pushing Clara back.
"I can help," Clara urged. "I have power now."
"You're not ready," Lucien said. "These creatures feed on magic. They'll drain you dry."
From between the trees, a form emerged. Clara expected to see Dominic or Erynn, but instead, a woman with long white hair stepped into the woods.
"Isolde!" Clara gasped.
Isolde's golden eyes gleamed in the darkness. "Hello, Clara. I see Lucien has begun your training." She waved her hand, and the shadow wolves sat down, still watching with hungry eyes.
"How did you escape Dominic?" Lucien demanded.
"Escape?" Isolde laughed. "My dear brother, you still don't understand."
She walked toward them, her white dress floating around her like mist. "I never needed to escape. Dominic and I have been working together from the beginning."
"That's not possible," Clara said. "You've been helping me."
"I've been guiding you," Isolde amended. "Preparing you. But not for what you think."
She reached out her hand. "Come with me now, Clara. The time has come for you to fulfill your true purpose."
"Don't listen to her," Lucien warned.
Isolde smiled coldly. "Tell her the truth, Lucien. Tell her what happens in the ritual your way. Tell her who really has to die."
Clara looked at Lucien, fear creeping into her heart. "What is she talking about?"
Lucien's silver eyes met hers, filled with sorrow. "To create the bridges between worlds, someone must become the bridge."
"I know that," Clara said. "That's my purpose."
"What he's not telling you," Isolde said, "is that becoming the bridge means ceasing to exist as yourself. Your soul will be torn apart, scattered across the worlds. You'll be everywhere and nowhere, forever."
Clara stepped back. "Is that true?"
Lucien couldn't meet her eyes. "I was going to tell you."
Clara's world seemed to tilt beneath her feet. "So all this time, all these lives... you've been preparing me to sacrifice myself?"
Lucien reached for her hand. "Clara, please—"
As their fingers touched, one final memory burst between them—the most terrible one yet. Clara saw herself on an altar, Lucien holding a knife over her heart. Her own voice echoed: "Do it, my love. End this curse. Set us free."
Clara pulled away, horror on her face. "You killed me," she whispered. "In my first life. It was you."
Lucien's face crumpled in pain. "I didn't want to. You begged me to do it."
"And now," Isolde said softly, "he'll do it again."
