Chapter 147 - Welcoming Chaos
Chapter 147 - Welcoming Chaos
Chapter 45 - Welcoming Chaos
Lyrielle POV
The courtyard overflowed with energy as the fox, bear, and lion shifters arrived through shimmering portals, their entourages packing the air with magic, musk, and excitement.
The second they stepped onto academy grounds, every student seemed to rise a little taller. New allies meant new strength. New strength meant hope.
Nyx and I led the welcoming committee with wide smiles and open arms… until everything inside me stuttered.
A scent hit me first. Warm honey, and burnt cedar. My entire body shivered like someone dragged claws down my spine.
"Seiryn," I hissed in my mind. "Don’t even start."
My dragon purred. "Mate."
Across the crowd, a fox shifter stepped into view.
And gods… he was lethal, and beautiful.
He has red hair that glowed like autumn fire, golden brown eyes that tracked me like prey he’d politely ask permission to devour, sun-warmed tan skin, tattoos swirling down his arms, and a body stacked like he’d been sculpted by thirsty poets.
I froze.
Nyx groaned beside me. “You have got to be kidding me…”
Before I could turn, her scent hit the air too. Sunlit sand. Hot wind. Lion musk. Nyx’s head snapped around.
There he was.
A lion shifter with long blonde hair tied back in a warrior’s tail, green eyes glowing like enchanted jade, and a cocky smirk plastered on his stupidly perfect mouth. He gave her a once over, blatantly appreciative.
Of course he did. Beside us, Lucen and Rhaen went rigid.
Rhaen’s wolf snarled through his chest.
Lucen hissed. “Absolutely not.”
Nyx shot them a look. “We literally JUST talked about this.”
“Doesn’t mean I like it,” Rhaen growled.
The fox shifter approached first. When he bowed, every muscle in his body moved in a slow, controlled ripple that made my mouth go dry.
“Princess Lyrielle,” he said, his voice smooth and warm. “I’m Elion Lightfoot. Elite fox tracker. Here to serve the realm.”
Serve the realm....or....Serve me. Great. Love that for my sanity.
My voice came out too high. “H-Hi.”
Nyx snorted. The lion shifter strutted up to her with swagger potent enough to knock out a small kingdom.
“Princess Nyxaria,” he purred. “I am Rykard Sunclaw, heir to the Southern Pride.”
Lucen shoved himself between them. “Back the fuck up, Simba.”
Nyx slapped his chest so hard he stumbled. “Control. Yourself.”
Rhaen stepped close to my side, his chest brushing my arm. “Fox boy can stop staring at you now.”
Elion raised a brow at him. “Fox man. And I’m staring because the goddess of fate apparently hates you enough to give your mate another mate.”
Nyx wheezed laughter. Rhaen growled, stepping forward.
I grabbed his arm. “Stop being dramatic.”
He glared at Elion. “Stop calling it fate.”
“It’s literally fate,” Elion said. “Also, you smell like jealousy. It’s cute.”
Nyx slapped a hand over her mouth to hide her laughter.
Rykard looked between Lucen and Nyx with a grin. “I like her fire. She’ll make a good queen.”
Lucen snarled. Nyx elbowed him again.
“Boys,” I said, rubbing my temples. “We are not doing this.”
“Agreed,” Elion said smoothly. “I’d rather get to know my mate without anyone losing limbs.”
Rhaen stiffened like he was three seconds from exploding.
Nyx crossed her arms. “Well. This is going to be a nightmare.”
“Absolute nightmare,” I muttered.
Elion smiled at me like he already imagined kissing me breathless. Rykard winked at Nyxaria. Lucen and Rhaen growled in unison.
Seiryn laughed in my head. "This is going to be fun."
I was going to die. Or murder everyone.
Probably both.

Lucen POV
I had to walk away.
If I didn’t, I was going to tear the lion’s throat out and shove the fox up a tree.
The bond was pulling so hard it felt like someone was dragging barbed wire through my chest, but Nyxaria was standing there talking to that golden-haired bastard with a soft blush on her cheeks and a smile she used to only give me.
I couldn’t breathe.
Rhaen grabbed my arm, his jaw tight. “Come on. Before I rip out the fox’s spine through his asshole.”
We pushed through the crowd, ignoring the glances and whispers, ignoring how Lyrielle’s laugh rang behind us as fox-boy-Elion tried to impress her. I hated him. I hated all foxes. I hated every animal with red hair.
“I’m gonna puke,” I muttered as we reached the eastern courtyard.
Rhaen groaned, pulling at his own hair. “I don’t… I don’t understand how people do this. One mate is already like having your soul set on fire. Two? Why would the goddess be like, hmm yes, let’s multiply their suffering.”
“It’s not suffering, it’s character development,” I snapped, pacing. “I’m going to develop myself into a murderer.”
Rhaen snorted a broken laugh. “You’re losing it.”
“No shit I’m losing it!” I snarled. “He looked at Nyxaria like she was dessert. My mate. Mine.”
Vareth, his wolf, snarled so loudly in his head I could practically hear it.
My own wolf, Kaelth, was pacing in mine like a caged beast.
"We should kill the lion," Kaelth hissed.
“No,” I muttered aloud. “We’re not killing anyone.”
"Fine. We maim him."
“Shut up.”
Rhaen collapsed onto a bench, his fingers trembling.
“Lucen… I love her,” he whispered. “I’ve loved Lyrielle since we were kids. I thought I had time. I thought..”
His voice cracked.
“I know,” I said quietly. “I know, Rhaen.”
The ache in my chest pulsed, sharp and breathless. We were two of the strongest hybrids in the realm…
…and we were helpless.
The heavy sound of boots echoed behind us, and we whipped around to find Ravek, our lycan father, approaching with that grim expression that usually meant he was about to lecture us into behaving.
“You two look like shit,” he said bluntly.
Rhaen buried his face in his hands. “Dad… what do we do?”
Ravek exhaled and sat down beside us, his broad arms crossing over his chest. “You breathe. First of all.”
“I can’t breathe,” I snapped. “My mate is talking to a lion like he hung the moons.”
“That lion,” Ravek said calmly, “has political power, battle training, and a damn good family reputation. Same with the fox. These matches strengthen our alliances.”
“I don’t care about alliances,” I said through clenched teeth. “I care about her.”
“I know,” Ravek said gently. “Which is exactly why you need to handle this right.”
Rhaen’s voice shook. “How are we supposed to share?”
“You don’t share,” Ravek said. “You grow.”
“That sounds like bullshit,” I said.
He smiled faintly. “It is bullshit. But it’s also true. You two were raised to be leaders. Leaders don’t get to cling to what they love like dragons to their hoard. Your mates’ destinies are bigger than your jealousy.”
“I hate destiny,” Rhaen muttered.
“I know,” Ravek said again. “But you have to let them choose. And you have to trust them to love you even when others love them too.”
I didn’t want to hear that. I wanted someone to tell me to punch the lion in the face.
Before I could argue, the air crackled, and lightning spiraled down into the courtyard in a perfect column.
Kylion materialized, storm god, our father by magic and some very complicated divine nonsense. He looked like he ate thunderstorms for breakfast and judged mortals for fun.
“You boys are loud,” he said. “And dramatic.”
Rhaen groaned. “We know.”
Kylion crossed his arms, his eyes glowing pale blue.
“So,” he said, “you found out about the additional mates.”
“Found out,” I echoed. “As in we watched them flirt with the girls right in front of us.”
Kylion raised a brow. “A tragedy. Truly.”
Rhaen gestured helplessly. “We’re losing it. How are we supposed to let this happen?”
Kylion sighed and crouched in front of us, like a father dealing with toddlers throwing divine tantrums.
“You don’t have to like this,” he said. “But you do have to accept it.”
“Why?” I demanded.
“Because the world is not set up for comfort right now,” Kylion said. “The realms are unstable. Chaos is merging with your Queen. Fear is awakening. Raelith is nearly reborn. Ancient powers are stirring. This is not a time to claim, or possess, or restrict.”
His eyes softened.
“It is a time to strengthen bonds. All bonds.”
Rhaen swallowed. “Even if it hurts?”
“Especially when it hurts.”
I felt my throat close.
Kylion rested a hand on each of our shoulders. Electricity hummed under his skin.
“Your mates,” he said, “will need every one of you. Every connection. Every strength each mate brings. The lion’s pride magic. The fox’s stealth. Your shadows and blood. Rhaen’s wolf. Nyxaria’s storms. Lyrielle’s waters.”
He squeezed.
“The realm needs all of you working as one. If you fight fate now, you fracture the defense the realms desperately need.”
I exhaled shakily.
Rhaen wiped his eyes. “We don’t want to lose them.”
“You won’t,” Kylion said simply. “Not unless you push them away.”
He stood, lightning threading through his hair.
“Now go,” he said. “Let the girls meet their new mates. Trust the bond. Trust them.”
Rhaen looked at me. I looked at him. We both groaned in unison.
Ravek slapped our backs. “Proud of you idiots.”
“I hate this,” I muttered, dragging my hands through my hair.
Kylion smirked.
“Good,” he said. “Growth always starts with hate.”
And the bastard vanished.
Leaving me and Rhaen staring at each other like two wolves forced into therapy.
“…I still wanna punch the lion,” I said.
Rhaen nodded. “Same. But we won’t.”
“No,” I agreed.
Silence.
“…maybe just a little bit.”
He grinned.
“Later,” he said. “After they like us again.”
And we walked back toward the courtyard away from the girls, our hearts aching, and our bonds burning…
…and deciding to do the right thing anyway.

Nyxaria POV
The heat between me and Rykard was ridiculous.
He stood close, way too fucking close, his broad shoulders blocking half the damn sunlight, and that golden hair catching the breeze like he knew exactly what it did to me. His green eyes tracked every move I made, slow, deliberate, and hungry.
Vhalra purred in my head, "He smells like lightning and firewood. Claim him."
"Absolutely not. Not yet."
“So…” Rykard said, his voice a deep rumble that hit low in my spine. “You’ll be at the welcome feast tonight, yes?”
“Yeah,” I said, and my voice cracked like a thirteen year old boy. Smooth, Nyx. Real smooth.
He smiled like he heard it and liked it.
A few feet away, Lyrielle was already drowning in fox-boy’s molten brown stare, her dragon Seiryn thrashing happily.
I cleared my throat, loudly, and tugged Lyrielle aside.
She blinked, breathless. “What?”
“We need to talk,” I hissed quietly. “Before we both end up marked and mated in the middle of the courtyard.”
Her eyes widened. “Oh Gods, you’re right.”
I leaned in. “I think we need to wait. For Lucen and Rhaen. They’re trying so hard, and if we seal these bonds now…” I shook my head. “It’ll break them.”
Lyrielle’s shoulders softened. “Yeah. We wait.”
Agreement settled between us as easily as breathing.
The fox approached again, respectfully, and his eyes were bright. The lion stepped up beside him, his gaze flicking over my throat like he already imagined his mark there.
“Tonight then?” Rykard asked.
“Tonight,” I breathed.
The boys dipped their heads in a courtly bow that would’ve made any fae girl swoon. Then, one by one, they leaned in and planted soft kisses, barely there brushes of lips against our cheeks that made heat crackle through my chest.
“We’ll see you soon,” Rykard murmured.
And then they walked away, leaving me and Lyrielle standing in the courtyard with shaking hands, burning cheeks…
…and hearts beating way too damn fast.
