Breaking Point

Breaking Point

Maya's POV

I lunged at Dante with my bare hands.
But something stopped me halfway.
A voice in my head that didn't belong to Agent Maya Seven.
It belonged to me.
The real me.
"No," I whispered, fighting against the programming trying to take control.
"Maya?" Dante asked. "Are you okay?"
"Stay back!" I screamed. "Don't come any closer!"
My head felt like it was splitting in two.
One part of me wanted to kill all four of them.
The other part wanted to protect them.
"Fight it, Maya," Adrian said quietly. "Fight the programming."
"I can't!"
"Yes, you can."
"You don't understand! I can see everything now! Every way to hurt you! Every weakness!"
Dr. Reyes was watching me with interest.
"Fascinating," she said. "The two personalities are fighting each other."
"Make it stop!" I begged her.
"I can't. This is what happens when the program tries to activate but the subject has formed emotional attachments."
"What does that mean?"
"It means you have to choose. Be Agent Maya Seven and complete your mission. Or be Maya and let your programming destroy you from the inside."
I fell to my knees as pain shot through my skull.
Images flashed through my mind.
Agent Maya Seven's memories.
Training in a secret facility.
Learning to kill with my hands, with weapons, with poison.
Practicing on targets that looked like Dante, Marcus, Luca, and Adrian.
Thousands of hours preparing for this moment.
"How long?" I gasped. "How long have I been training to kill them?"
"Fifteen years," Dr. Reyes said. "Since you were six years old."
"Six?"
"That's when we found you. A street orphan with no family, no history, no one who would miss you."
I looked up at her through the pain.
"You stole my childhood."
"I gave you a purpose."
"You made me into a monster!"
"I made you into justice."
Another wave of memories hit me.
But these weren't Agent Maya Seven's memories.
They were mine.
Real memories that had been buried deep.
A little girl living on the streets.
Hungry. Cold. Alone.
Until a kind woman found her and promised her a home.
Dr. Reyes.
"You saved me," I whispered.
"I gave you everything. Food, shelter, training, purpose."
"You gave me lies."
"I gave you the tools to avenge my daughter."
"Your daughter died twenty years ago! This won't bring her back!"
"No, but it will make things right."
I forced myself to stand up, even though my head was pounding.
"What if they're telling the truth? What if it really was an accident?"
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me!"
"It shouldn't. You're a weapon. Weapons don't have opinions."
That's when I realized something.
The programming was strong, but it wasn't perfect.
It could be fought.
It could be beaten.
"You made one mistake," I told Dr. Reyes.
"What's that?"
"You let me think I was human for too long."
I closed my eyes and focused on the real memories.
Not the training. Not the programming.
The memories of the past few weeks.
Dante teaching me how to play chess.
Marcus making me laugh with stupid jokes.
Luca helping me pick out clothes.
Adrian showing me how to fight fairly instead of just to kill.
Four men who had cared about me.
Four men who had become my family.
When I opened my eyes, the programming was still there.
But it was quieter.
Manageable.
"Maya?" Dante asked carefully.
"I'm okay," I said. "For now."
"Can you fight it?"
"I can try."
Dr. Reyes was frowning now.
"This shouldn't be possible."
"What shouldn't be possible?"
"You shouldn't be able to resist the final program. It's designed to override everything."
"Maybe your design wasn't as perfect as you thought."
"Or maybe," a new voice said, "she had help."
We all turned around.
Agent Chen was climbing over the rubble toward us.
The real Agent Chen.
The woman I had thought was my mother.
"Sarah," Dr. Reyes said. "You're supposed to be dead."
"Sorry to disappoint you."
Agent Chen looked terrible. Her clothes were torn, her face was bloody, and she was limping.
But she was alive.
"How?" Dr. Reyes demanded.
"The same way Maya is fighting your programming. I had help."
"From who?"
Agent Chen smiled.
"From your daughter."
Dr. Reyes went completely still.
"That's impossible. Sarah is dead."
"Sarah Volkov is dead. But Sarah Chen is very much alive."
My brain felt like it was melting.
"What are you saying?"
Agent Chen looked at me.
"I'm saying I really am your mother, Maya. And Dr. Reyes really is my mother."
"That's impossible!"
"Is it? Think about it. Who else would go to such lengths to create the perfect weapon? Who else would have the resources and the knowledge?"
Dr. Reyes was backing away now.
"Sarah, you died twenty years ago. I saw your body."
"You saw a body that looked like me. A girl the same age, with the same hair, wearing my clothes."
"You faked your own death?"
"I had to. You were already planning something terrible. I could see it in your eyes."
"I was planning justice!"
"You were planning murder!"
Agent Chen turned to the four heirs.
"She's right about one thing, though. You four did push a little girl off a bridge twenty years ago."
Dante, Marcus, Luca, and Adrian all looked guilty.
"But," Agent Chen continued, "the girl you pushed wasn't Sarah Volkov. It was a stranger. A homeless child who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."
"How do you know?" Marcus asked.
"Because Sarah Volkov was already gone. I had taken her away from the Volkov family the night before."
"Why?"
"Because I found out what my mother was planning. The experiments on children. The programming. The weapons."
Dr. Reyes was looking more and more desperate.
"Sarah, you don't understand. These men are killers. They've hurt so many people."
"So have you, Mother. So have I. So has Maya."
Agent Chen walked over to me.
"The question is, what do we do about it now?"
"I don't know," I said.
"I do."
Agent Chen pulled out a gun and pointed it at Dr. Reyes.
"We end this."
"Sarah, no!" Dr. Reyes begged. "I'm your mother!"
"You stopped being my mother the day you decided to turn children into weapons."
"I did it for you! To get justice for what happened to you!"
"Nothing happened to me! I've been alive this whole time!"
"But I thought—"
"You thought what you wanted to think. You created an entire fantasy to justify your revenge."
Agent Chen's finger moved to the trigger.
"Sarah, please. I love you."
"I love you too, Mother. That's why this hurts so much."
"Then don't do it."
"I have to."
But before Agent Chen could pull the trigger, I grabbed the gun.
"No."
"Maya, she needs to pay for what she did to you."
"Maybe. But not like this."
"Then how?"
I looked at Dr. Reyes. At the woman who had stolen my childhood and turned me into a weapon.
"We let her live with what she's done."
"That's not enough."
"It has to be enough."
I threw the gun over the edge of the building.
"No more killing. No more revenge. No more weapons."
"Maya," Dr. Reyes said quietly. "The programming is still there. You'll never be free of it."
"Maybe not. But I can choose not to use it."
"For how long? What happens when you get angry? What happens when someone threatens the people you care about?"
I looked at the four heirs.
At the men I had been programmed to kill.
At the men I had chosen to love instead.
"I guess we'll find out."
Dr. Reyes shook her head.
"You can't fight your nature forever."
"Watch me."
That's when Isabella Romano started laughing.
She had been so quiet we had almost forgotten about her.
"What's so funny?" Agent Chen asked.
"All of this," Isabella said. "All of this drama and emotion and family bonding."
"So?"
"So none of it matters."
"Why not?"
Isabella pulled out a phone and showed us the screen.
A timer.
Counting down.
Ten minutes and thirty-seven seconds.
Thirty-six.
Thirty-five.
"What is that?" I asked.
"A bomb," Isabella said. "A very big bomb. Hidden somewhere in the city."
"Where?"
"That's the fun part. You have to find it."
"Why would we do that?"
Isabella's smile got wider.
"Because if you don't find it and disarm it in the next ten minutes, it's going to kill ten thousand innocent people."
"You're bluffing."
"Am I? Look at the timer, Maya. Does it look like I'm bluffing?"
The numbers kept counting down.
Nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds.
Fifty-seven.
Fifty-six.
"Where is it?" Dante demanded.
"I'll tell you," Isabella said. "But only if Maya does something for me first."
"What?"
Isabella pointed at Dr. Reyes.
"Kill her."
Everyone stared at Isabella.
"What?" I asked.
"You heard me. Kill Dr. Reyes, and I'll tell you where the bomb is."
"That's insane."
"That's the deal."
I looked at the timer.
Nine minutes and twenty-three seconds.
At Dr. Reyes, who looked terrified.
At Agent Chen, who looked desperate.
At the four heirs, who were waiting to see what I would do.
"Maya," Isabella said sweetly. "tick tock."
