Chapter 121 What Ten Can Do
Chapter 121 What Ten Can Do
POV: Nora Ashveil
Malen and Doran gone together meant the situation had changed from Malen managing Doran to Malen moving Doran, and moving him required a destination, and the destination told me what she was building toward, and I needed to know the destination before I could understand what I was actually dealing with.
I stepped out of the circle without announcing why, just stepped out, and went to the tree line where Reed was with Eli, and I showed Reed my phone and then his own message back to him because showing him made it faster than explaining.
"Vera's contact saw them leave together," Reed said, "she could not follow without being seen, she stayed and messaged me."
"How long ago," I said.
"Forty minutes," he said.
Forty minutes of road in a northern direction from Vera's location put them in range of three possible destinations, and two of those three had nothing to offer Malen, and the third was the pack that had not yet formally responded to the coalition withdrawal question.
I messaged Vera: Did Doran seem willing or managed.
Her reply was immediate: Managed but not forced, there is a difference, he came with her.
He had come with her, which meant the leverage was still working, which meant he still believed he had more to lose from not cooperating with Malen than from cooperating with her, and changing that calculation required the thing Vera had told him, the Pack Advocate restorative provision, landing as more real and more available than Malen's version of protection.
I left the Malen and Doran situation with Reed and Vera and went back to the circle.
The circle had continued without me and the quality of it was not disrupted by my leaving and returning, which was something I noted, the gathering had its own presence that was not dependent on any one person in it being there continuously, and the independence of the gathering from my presence was its own kind of information about what the ten together were and were not.
We spent three days.
Not three days of structured work, not a workshop or a conference or anything that had a formal agenda, just three days in the sanctuary and the adjacent spaces, and what happened in those three days was the thing that had not been possible before because it required everyone to be in the same place.
They were each different.
This was the first thing that became clear, the ten were not the same manifestation in ten different bodies, the power had a common root and produced fundamentally different expressions, and the expressions varied in range and in specificity and in the cost structure and in the way it interacted with each person's existing bond, and mapping the differences required the kind of conversation you could only have with someone who also had the thing you were trying to map.
Vera's was the most controlled, fifteen years of careful cultivation, precise and efficient, the range limited but the direction reliable, and she could hold it for longer than any of us without a significant cost increase.
Cass had the widest natural range of the group, the signal she had been feeling since the sanctuary gathering was an expression of an ambient reach that she had not been consciously managing, and the managing of it was something Vera began working with her on the second day.
Jen, coming off the pharmaceutical, was in the process of the power returning to full availability and was experiencing the return with the specific disorientation of someone whose system had been interrupted for eight years, and Grace was monitoring the physiological side while the rest of us worked around the edges of what Jen could access without overtaxing the recovery.
Petra was the strongest in raw force, the youngest and the one whose power had been least worn down by years of suppression, and the force of it when she reached for it was something that stopped conversation in the clearing even when she was not intending to use it fully, just the reaching creating a presence in the space that everyone felt.
By the third day Vera had started using a word for what the ten of them were together.
Not a pack, she said, and the not-a-pack was important to her, the pack was a specific thing with a specific structure and the ten of them were not that, they were not bonded through a common alpha authority, they were not operating under a hierarchy, they were not drawn together by the bond's compulsion, they were drawn together by recognition and by the signal the sanctuary had sent and by the choice each of them had made to respond to that signal.
"Something different," she said, "something new."
On the last day Faye, who had been the quietest throughout and who had the specific quality of someone who had been observing carefully and had found the moment she had been waiting for, said she wanted to try something.
She said, "All of us, at the same time, just reaching, not pushing outward, just reaching for the power simultaneously."
The circle was quiet for a moment.
Vera looked at me and I looked at Vera and the looking had the quality of two people who had each spent enough time with the power to understand what the proposal might produce and were not certain they knew.
I said, "Together."
Everyone in the circle reached.
I felt my own power open at the same moment I felt nine others open, and the feeling of nine others was something I had no framework for because I had only ever felt my own opening, and what it felt like when ten opened simultaneously in the same space was not ten times one, it was something the multiplication did not capture, something that had a quality the individual versions did not have.
The silence that fell was not supernatural quiet, it was not the Unbinding as I had used it before, it was something older and more complete, a stillness that was not the absence of the bond but the presence of something that the bond had been built from, something that predated the pack structure and the authority mechanisms and the compulsion system and all of the things that had been built on top of it.
It lasted for thirty seconds.
When it cleared, the sanctuary had a different quality, and the people in the circle had a different quality, and I looked around at nine faces and found them all doing the same thing, looking at themselves and at each other with the expression of someone who had touched something and had been changed by the touching.
Eli was at the tree line and I found his face, and even from the distance I could see that he had felt the edge of it, the ambient presence reaching beyond the circle to the tree line.
My phone vibrated, Reed, and the message said Malen had made contact with the one remaining undecided pack, and the pack's alpha had agreed to a meeting, and the meeting was tomorrow morning, and the meeting included a request for Pack Advocate representation.
Both sides had asked for the Pack Advocate.
In the same meeting.
