Chapter 45 Mirror of Rage

Chapter 45 Mirror of Rage
KAEL
I had faced armies. Ancient evils. Impossible odds.
But watching two versions of my wife face each other was something entirely different.

The other Sera moved like death itself. Corrupted magic pouring off her in waves. Her eyes were violet still but wrong. Cracked. Like staring into shattered glass.
My Sera stood between this nightmare and our daughter. Shadows ready. Defiant. Terrified.
"Nyx, run!" Sera shouted.

"I am not leaving you!" Nyx's small voice. Too young for this. Too powerful to run.
"Listen to your mother." The other Sera laughed. Broken. "While you still have one. I lost mine to war. Lost everyone. Because of you."
"I have never met you," Nyx said. "I did not destroy your timeline."

"Not yet. But you will. In six years, you lose control. Your power fractures reality. Creates a cascade. Destroys seventeen timelines simultaneously." The other Sera stepped closer. "Mine was one of them. I watched my daughter die. My husband. Everyone. Erased. Because you were careless."

"That has not happened here," Sera said. "This is a different timeline. Different choices."
"All timelines converge eventually. She will make the same mistakes. Power that strong always does." The other Sera's magic flared. "Unless I stop her now. Kill her before she kills us all."
She attacked.
Too fast. I barely intercepted. My blade met her magic and shattered. The force threw me back into a wall. Ribs cracked.
"Kael!" Sera ran to me.
Wrong move. Left Nyx exposed.

The other Sera was on our daughter in seconds. Hand around Nyx's throat. Lifting her. "This ends now."
"STOP!" Sera's scream was raw. Desperate. "Please. She is just a child. MY child. If you were me, if you loved like I love, you would understand. You cannot kill her."
"I was you. I did love like you love. That is why I must kill her." The other Sera's voice broke. "Because I know what comes. I lived it. I watched it. And I would rather murder this child than let her destroy billions."

"Then kill me instead." Sera dropped her weapons. Walked forward. Hands raised. "Take my life. Spare hers. Please."
"Mother, no!" Nyx struggled. The other Sera's grip tightened. Choking her.

"One life for billions. That is the math." The other Sera looked at me. "You. King. Choose. Your wife or your daughter. Who dies today?"
My blood froze. "What?"
"I can kill one. Not both. My power has limits. Your wife offers her life. I could take it. Let the child live. Or I kill the child. Let your wife live with the grief like I do." Her smile was vicious. "Choose. Now. Or I kill both."

This was not a choice. This was torture.
"Kill me," Sera said. "Let Nyx live. Let her have a chance to be different. To choose better."
"No!" I found my voice. "You do not get to sacrifice yourself. Not for this."

"She is our daughter. To save her, I would give my life a thousand times over."
And if it meant keeping you alive, I would burn a thousand universes." I looked at the other Sera. At this broken version of the woman I loved. "You want revenge? Want someone to pay? Take me. King for king. Life for life. Let them both live."

"You?" The other Sera laughed. "What are you to me? Nothing. I want her to feel what I felt. Loss. Grief. The emptiness when everyone you love is gone."
"Then take me," Nyx gasped. "Let my parents live. Kill me. Stop the future you fear. Just let them go."
"NYX NO!" Sera and I shouted together.

The other Sera's face twisted. Pain. Rage. Grief. "You would die for them? So young and already willing to sacrifice?"

"They are my family. I would die for them. Just like you would have died for yours." Nyx stopped struggling. Met the other Sera's eyes. "You are not evil. You are hurt. You lost everything. I understand. If someone killed my parents, I would become you. I would hunt them across timelines. I would burn worlds."
"Then you do understand." The other Sera's grip loosened. Slightly.

"I do. But killing me will not bring your family back. It will not heal your grief. It will just make you a murderer of children." Nyx's voice was soft. "Is that what your daughter would want? For you to become this?"

The other Sera flinched. "Do not speak of her."
"Why? Because it hurts? Because remembering what you lost is worse than the rage?" Nyx reached up. Touched the other Sera's face. "She would not want this. You know she would not."

"She is dead because of you!"
"She is dead because of me in another timeline. I am sorry. I am so sorry you lost her. But I am not her killer. Not yet. Maybe not ever if you let me live. Let me learn. Let me choose differently."

Tears streamed down the other Sera's face. "I have nothing left. No family. No home. No timeline. Just rage. If I do not have revenge, what do I have?"
"A chance to start again." Arianna appeared from nowhere.

"I have walked through your timeline. Seen your collapse. It was not just Nyx. It was a combination. War. Famine. Corruption. Her power was the catalyst but not the cause. She was six years old. Overwhelmed. Under-trained. She made a mistake. One mistake. And seventeen timelines paid the price."
"Exactly. One mistake killed billions."

"Yes. But this Nyx is different. Trained. Controlled. Learning consequences. She knows what you lost. What could happen. That knowledge changes everything." Arianna stepped forward. "Let her live. Help us prevent your timeline from happening here. Or kill her and guarantee that another version makes the same mistake somewhere else."

The other Sera looked at Nyx. At me. At Sera. Calculating. Broken. Lost.
Then she dropped Nyx. "I cannot do this. I thought I could. Thought revenge would help. But looking at her—at you—I just see my family. What I lost." She fell to her knees. "I am so tired. So tired of being angry. Of hurting. I just want it to stop."

Sera moved slowly. Knelt beside her other self. "Then let it stop. Stay here. Help us. Be part of this family. You do not have to be alone anymore."
"I am you from a dead timeline. A ghost. I should not exist."

"But you do. You are here. Real. Suffering." Sera took her hand. "Let us help you. Please."
The other Sera looked at their joined hands. Hers was scarred. Broken. Sera's was whole. Undamaged. Two versions of the same person. One destroyed. One surviving.

"What is your name?" Nyx asked. "You are not just 'other Sera.' You must have a name."
"I gave up my name when my timeline collapsed. I am just Void now. Empty." She looked at Nyx. "But before. I was Sera Arianna Blackwood Draeven. Queen. Mother. Wife. Failure."

"You are not a failure," I said. "You survived the impossible. Crossed timelines to get here. That is strength, not failure."
"I tried to kill a child. Your child."
"You did not. You stopped. That matters."

Void looked at me. Really looked. "You are like my Kael. Same eyes. Same stupid nobility. He died protecting our daughter. Threw himself between her and the cascade. It did not save her. Just killed him too." Her voice broke. "I have hated myself for surviving ever since."

"Then stop surviving and start living." Sera squeezed her hand. "Stay. Help us. Be the aunt Nyx needs. Be family."
"You want me to stay? After I attacked you? Threatened your daughter?"
"Yes. Because you are me. And I understand grief. I understand rage. I understand doing terrible things to protect what matters." Sera helped her stand. "We are stronger together.

Two Seras instead of one.

Imagine what we could do."
