Chapter 24

"Yes. How should I explain this? When I first saw him, he seemed familiar. Okay, not exactly familiar, let's say known. Then when we were fighting there…” Kyla faltered. Her thoughts raced as she thought back to what had happened and her heart began to beat faster. Was it anger?

"There?" Devon asked with interest.

Kyla hesitated a moment longer. “We humans say that at the moment of death, the whole of life passes before us. It was similar, only it wasn't just this life. Since you mentioned reincarnation earlier, you probably know what I mean. Most of the time, my life ended in unnatural ways. In short, I was murdered. ...Oh my god, if anyone hears this...they'll think I'm crazy.” Kyla sighed and clutched her forehead.

"Yes, I am aware of that," Devon replied simply.

"Okay, and well, I want to know if you ordered him to kill me."

"What do you mean by that?" Devon straightened up and narrowed his eyes.

"Darian was the one who always killed me. Yesterday... When he was just about there again and looked at me... with that look... I knew it. His words too..."

Devon got up with a jerk that caused the chair to tip over with a crash, his eyes blazing and his hands clenched in anger.

From his reaction alone, Kyla could tell the answer.

Devon was about to leave when Kyla got up and grabbed one corner of his robe. "Wait!"

Devon looked down at her, still that red in his eyes.

"I'm not done yet and no, you don't just leave me standing here damn it! According to your reaction, the answer is no, okay. That calms me down a bit, at least I don't have to worry about you wanting to kill me too."

"How could I?! I want Raia to return, so I can't really kill the bearer of her spirit!!!”, he snapped at her harshly.

Kyla winced slightly, but still held him tight. "It's okay! I got it! Would you please calm down? Because I have other news for you.”

"They can wait!" He tore himself from her and was almost out of the room when Kyla called after him: "I saw Raia!"

He stopped abruptly and turned to her with wide, golden eyes. "WHAT?"

"WOW! The gentleman still seems interested.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm.

Devon walked up to her and grabbed her shoulders roughly. "WHERE? WHEN?"

Kyla tried to break his grip, but he only tightened it.

"Damned! Devon, you're hurting me!"

He released her with a jerk and grinned.

"Now what's so funny about that?" Kyla rubbed her arms in frustration.

"You called me Devon."

"Yes and?"

"For the first time."

"Yeah, that's your name, or do you prefer Bastard?!" she moaned.

Devon wondered why hearing his name on her lips filled him with happiness.

"Listen, I know you want her back, that's all well and good, but I'm still me. KYLA!"

When he said nothing, she continued. "Well, I didn't talk to her or anything, but I saw her and felt her feelings..." Being more than confused herself, she started pacing. Devon stood still, his gaze resting on her as she told him about her experience.

When it ended, he was still standing and saying nothing. "Can you tell me what that's about? Can't you just take her spirit out of my body and bring me back to MY WORLD?” she finally wanted to know. "That will not do. We tried it with the first reincarnation, that's when the carrier died."

"Okay, better not then."

“Raia's mind and body are separate. What concerns me, however, is the fact that you saw her body and at the same time her mind. Raia's body no longer exists. But that may also be related to Dantalion's powers.”

"That means? What are these powers anyway and what exactly do you mean by that? Azamir couldn't explain that to me."

"Dantalion poisoned you bit by bit with his power through the book he gave you. For a creature with its own power, that's deadly. He knew that. But since Raia hasn't awakened yet, you're still alive. He would have been the only one who could have taken it back.”

"Why was that?" Kyla asked skeptically.

"Because he's gone." Kyla threw up her arms. "Can you please stop killing everyone? Ever thought that I want to decide for myself what happens to them?” she snapped at him.
