Chapter 39 The Breaking Point
Chapter 39 The Breaking Point
POV: Aria
The ceiling is coming down.
Not in pieces anymore. In massive sections. The stone that held the Citadel for centuries is finally breaking. The magic that sustained it is gone. The power that kept it standing is unraveling.
Everything is falling.
Below us in the corridors, Fenris is moving fast. He's herding the awakened wolves toward the exits. The ones who were suspended in the ritual chamber. The ones whose consciousnesses were stolen. They're confused and weak but they're alive.
Raven is with him. Damon too. Dragging wolves who can't walk. Screaming orders at the ones who can still move.
They're trying to save everyone.
But up here in the ritual chamber, nothing is being saved.
Lyanna staggers to her feet. She's pale. Shaking. Like she might collapse at any moment. But her eyes are clear. She sees me and her expression breaks.
What's happening to her, Thorne demands. The Commander is standing in the chamber entrance, her hand on her weapon like she could fight this. Like there's anything left to fight.
The merging, Fenris says. He's returned to the chamber after getting the last of the wolves out. His voice is grim. It's gone too far. If she doesn't separate from him now, they're both going to be lost
His words hit like ice.
I look down at my hands and they're barely there. My skin is translucent. The gold and blue light isn't coming from inside me anymore. I'm becoming the light. The distinction between my body and the magic is disappearing.
And underneath my skin, golden veins spread like branches. Like roots. Like Kael's consciousness is becoming visible in my form.
My entire body flickers.
Not like a candle. Like a transmission breaking. Like I'm trying to be two things at once and failing at both.
Aria's form keeps flickering and I can feel him there. Deep inside my consciousness. Burning as bright as the sun but beginning to burn out.
His voice comes through overlapping with mine. Not two separate voices. One voice trying to be two people.
I can't maintain two forms anymore, our voice says. The chambers are collapsing. The ritual is consuming everything. One of us has to let go
The words land and I understand what he's saying.
One of us has to die so the other can survive.
We've been running from this moment since the beginning. Since the first time we felt the bond accelerating. Since the moment we merged completely. Since Lyanna joined us in the ritual.
We've known this was coming.
But knowing and facing it are different things.
No, I say through the bond. Kael, no. We can find another way. We can—
I can't complete the sentence because there is no other way. There's never been another way.
His presence wraps around me with devastating love and finality. Then I'll choose for both of us
His consciousness starts to pull away from mine.
Not suddenly. Slowly. Like he's unwinding himself from inside me. Like he's untangling his essence from my form. Like he's preparing to let go completely.
Wait, I scream at him. Wait, you can't just—
But he can. He's an ancient Alpha King. He's survived five years of conscious death sleep. He's been waiting for this moment his entire existence even if he didn't know it.
The separation is starting.
His golden veins are fading from under my skin. His presence is getting quieter in my consciousness. His light is dimming.
I can feel what comes next. When he completely separates, his consciousness will diffuse. It will spread across the territories through the magical bonds he's reestablishing. He won't die in the way humans die.
He'll transform into something else entirely.
He'll become part of the pack magic itself.
He'll exist in every bond between wolves. In every connection. In every moment of true mate magic moving through the territories.
He'll exist but he won't be Kael anymore.
Not in any form I could recognize.
Kael, please, I beg him. Come back. Don't do this. Please
His response comes like a whisper at the edge of my consciousness.
I love you, he says. That's the only thing that matters. Everything else is just time. But this love. This is eternal
His presence is getting weaker.
Lyanna is crying. Thorne's hand is over her mouth. Even Damon has stopped moving.
Everyone can feel what's happening. Everyone knows what this moment means.
The separation continues.
His consciousness is pulling away piece by piece. Each withdrawal takes something from me. Takes a warmth I didn't know was there. Takes a presence I've grown used to. Takes the other half of my existence.
Aria, his voice is fading now, take care of them. Lead them better than I did. Be the bridge between their worlds. Be what I couldn't be
No, I say. Kael. No no no
But he's still pulling away.
The golden light is disappearing from my form. My skin is becoming solid again but it's a wrong kind of solid. It's lonely solid. It's half-alive solid.
The chambers shake harder around us.
More stone falls. Dust fills the air.
And Kael's consciousness is fading into something vast and impersonal and everywhere.
I can feel him distributed across the territories. Spreading through every magical bond. Becoming the foundation that true mates are built on.
He's not dying.
He's becoming eternal in a way he never wanted.
And he did it so I could live.
