Chapter 38 The Broken Councilor

Chapter 38 The Broken Councilor
POV: Aria

The dark magic starts to unravel.
Not all at once. Slowly. Like threads coming loose from something that was never really woven together properly. Matthias was never really whole. He was just a collection of stolen pieces held together by will and corruption.
And now that will is breaking.
He screams as his body begins to change. Not transforming like I did. Breaking down. His skin darkens and cracks like ancient leather left in the sun too long. His hair turns white and falls away in clumps. His hands shake and his fingers twist inward like branches dying.
Decades are passing across his body in seconds.
All the years he stole. All the essence he took to stay young and powerful and eternal. It's all coming back at once. All the aging he refused to do is happening now.
He looks down at his hands and the horror on his face is almost painful to see. Almost.
No, he whispers. No, I was supposed to be eternal
His voice cracks. Literally cracks. Like something old and dried out breaking apart.
I step forward and he sees me. Sees me clearly for the first time since we entered this chamber. Not as a girl he can break. Not as a problem to solve. As the True Keeper who just destroyed his entire world.
You were supposed to be just, I say coldly. The words come out without anger. Just fact. Instead you became a thief
His body is crumbling faster now. The skin hanging loose from his bones. His eyes sinking deeper into his skull. He looks ancient. He looks like he's been dead for centuries and only now the world is realizing it.
He reaches for me.
His withered hand stretches out like he's asking for help. Like he thinks I might save him. Like he thinks there's still something left worth saving.
I don't move.
I don't step forward. I don't pull back. I just stand there and watch as the ritual chamber and the dark magic he created turn on him completely.
The shadows wrap around his body like they're alive. Like they're angry. The magic he stole from all those wolves, all those consciousnesses he drained, they're all rejecting him at once.
He screams but it's not a sound. It's a scream that happens entirely inside the magic. Inside the space where his consciousness is being torn apart.
Through my connection with Kael, I feel nothing. Not victory. Not justice. Not triumph.
Just exhaustion.
Kael's presence wraps around mine quietly. No words. Just understanding. Just being there. Just knowing that this moment isn't something to celebrate.
It's something to survive.
Matthias falls.
What lands on the stone floor isn't really him anymore. It's dust. Decades of stolen magic turning to dust. Essence returning to the territories. Consciousness dissolving back into the places it was stolen from.
The wolves in the chamber feel it. I can sense them becoming whole again. Their stolen years returning. Their consciousness recognizing themselves as complete. All because one man decided to stop existing.
I should feel something. Relief. Anger. Justice. Some kind of closure.
But there's only the exhaustion.
And something else.
A pull.
Aria, Lyanna's voice reaches me through our triple consciousness. Something's wrong. You're still transforming. You're still changing
I look down at my hands and she's right.
My skin is glowing brighter. The gold and blue light is spreading. It's not just emanating from me anymore. It's pulling me in. I'm becoming the light. I'm becoming the magic. I'm becoming something less human and more consciousness.
The transformation is accelerating.
Kael, I say through the bond. What's happening
His response comes immediately but it's tinged with fear. The ritual. It's trying to complete fully. To merge you with the pack magic. To make you part of the territories themselves instead of just connected to them
This wasn't supposed to happen yet. This was supposed to be slow. This was supposed to give us time.
But nothing about this has gone the way it's supposed to.
My form is becoming translucent. Not like Kael was when he was fading. Like I'm becoming the magic itself. Like the distinction between my consciousness and the power is blurring.
Can we stop it, I ask. Can we slow it down
There's a moment of silence through the bond. A moment where Kael and Lyanna are trying to find an answer that doesn't exist.
No, Lyanna says finally. She's being honest. I don't think we can stop it. I think what's happening to you is the final cost. The price of merging three consciousnesses. Of accepting stolen magic and transforming it into balance. Of defeating someone who tried to corrupt everything
The chamber walls are still cracking but they're cracking differently now. Not from destruction. From transformation. They're becoming something else. Something that mirrors what I'm becoming.
I'm fading but I'm not dying.
I'm transforming but I'm not disappearing.
I'm becoming something that exists in both the physical world and the magic itself.
And I don't know if I'm going to be able to come back from it.
