Chapter 35 The Price Revealed
Chapter 35 The Price Revealed
POV: Aria
I don't recognize myself anymore.
When I look down at my hands, they're not entirely hands. They're light and shadow mixed together. Bond marks cover my entire body now, glowing with golden and blue fire. Every symbol that represents my connection to Kael is visible. Every magical seal that binds us together is written across my skin like scripture.
I'm no longer just Aria.
I'm no longer just Kael.
I'm something new. Something that hasn't existed in centuries.
The moment I step forward, everything changes.
The essence flowing toward Matthias stops. It reverses. All those stolen consciousnesses, all those awakened wolves being drained, their power suddenly shifts direction. It flows toward me instead.
Matthias's face goes white.
That's impossible, he says, his voice cracking with disbelief. True Keepers are extinct
But I'm not listening to him anymore.
I move through the chamber like liquid lightning. Every binding holding a suspended wolf shatters at my touch. The magical restraints crack and fall away like glass. One by one, the awakened wolves collapse to the stone floor. Free. Conscious. Themselves again.
But something's wrong.
The essence keeps coming. It doesn't stop. The power that was supposed to flow to Matthias is now pouring into me and it doesn't know how to stop. It just keeps coming and coming and coming.
I feel myself overflowing.
The consciousness of dozens of wolves. Their essences. Their magic. Their fear and pain and desperation. It's all flooding into me at once and I can't process it. Can't contain it.
Through the bond, Kael realizes what's happening.
The ritual can only process one consciousness at a time, he says, and his voice is filled with sudden horror. If you absorb all this power at once
I understand before he finishes.
The merging is accelerating.
When we merged completely, we created a consciousness that was balanced between two beings. But now that balance is being flooded with dozens more essences. My body can't hold this. The ritual isn't designed for this. Nothing is designed for this.
We have minutes, Kael says. Not hours. Minutes before the merging becomes irreversible.
Panic floods through both of us simultaneously.
He tries to pull back. Tries to separate from my consciousness to slow the merging process. But I grab him. Not physically. Spiritually. Through the bond itself.
Not yet, I tell him. First we end him
His consciousness pushes against mine in frustration and fear.
We don't have time
We make time, I respond.
There's a desperate coordination that happens then. Not gentle. Not patient. We're moving as one being that's racing against its own dissolution. Every second, more essence pours into me. Every second, the merging accelerates. Every second, we lose more of ourselves to something new.
But we focus.
Matthias is backing away. His dark magic is flickering. Not from our assault but from confusion. He's never seen a True Keeper. Never faced a bonded pair in their truest form. He doesn't understand what he's looking at.
Fear is his weakness.
I advance and he panics.
His hands rise and the dark magic explodes outward. Not controlled anymore. Not focused. He's throwing everything he has at us. All the stolen essences he absorbed. All the power he's collected over centuries. Every ounce of darkness he's cultivated.
The chamber shakes.
Not from the magic hitting us. From Matthias pulling power from the very foundation of the Citadel itself. He's using the building as a weapon. Pulling at the ancient magic that sustains the structure. Trying to bring the whole chamber down and bury us all.
Stone cracks spread across the ceiling.
Dust falls like rain.
One of the larger cracks opens above and I see the sky beyond. The Blood Moon is fully risen now. Fully red. The ritual circle is complete.
But there's no ritual circle anymore. There's just us. Just Aria and Kael merged into something neither of us understood we could become. Just Matthias realizing that his greatest threat isn't the True Keeper or the Alpha King separately.
It's what happens when they choose each other over everything else.
The chamber shakes again and pieces of stone start falling. Chunks the size of wolves tumble down around us. The awakened wolves on the ground scream and run toward the exits. Fenris limps toward them, shepherding them out, understanding that the chamber itself is becoming a death trap.
Matthias summons more power and the Citadel groans.
I feel the building dying around us. I feel centuries of stone and magic cracking and crumbling. I feel the weight of history literally coming down on our heads.
And I move forward anyway.
