The Doctor's Redemption
The Doctor's Redemption
Dr. Ryan Archer's POV
The gunshots had stopped, but the screaming hadn't. I crawled out from behind the fishing shack where I'd been hiding and saw bodies spread across the lighthouse clearing like broken dolls.
"Help me! Please, someone help me!"
Agent Martinez was pulling Agent Thompson toward the rocks, leaving a trail of blood in the sand. Thompson's head wound was bleeding, and Martinez's shoulder was torn apart by a bullet.
This was my time. After five years of being too scared to help anyone, I finally had a chance to save lives instead of watching people die.
I grabbed my medical bag and ran toward the injured agents. "Agent Martinez! I'm Dr. Archer! Let me help!"
"Doc, thank God! Thompson's losing too much blood, and I can't stop the bleeding!"
I knelt beside Agent Thompson and quickly checked his head wound. The bullet had grazed his skull but hadn't entered. Lots of blood, but not fatal if I could stop the bleeding and avoid shock. " Agent Martinez, I need you to put pressure on your own shoulder wound while I work on Thompson. You're losing blood too."
"Is he going to make it?"
"If I can get him stabilized." I pulled out my emergency supplies and started cleaning Thompson's wound. "Agent Martinez, where's Agent Kim?"
"She went after Marcus with Elena Santos. Doc, we lost three agents in that battle."
Three dead spies. Because I'd been too much of a coward to turn Marcus in years ago when I first noticed what he was doing. " Agent Martinez, I need to tell you something important about Marcus's plan."
"Can it wait? We've got hurt people everywhere."
"No, it can't wait. Because Marcus isn't working alone, and the people helping him might come back to finish what they started."
I finished bandaging Thompson's head wound and went on to Martinez's shoulder. The bullet had gone clean through, which was good. But he'd lost a lot of blood, which was bad.
"Doc, what do you know about Marcus's partners?"
"Everything. I've been recording his talks for five years."
Agent Martinez looked at me. "You've been recording Marcus for five years and never told anyone?"
"I was scared. After what happened to Sarah Mitchell, I was too scared to act."
"Who's Sarah Mitchell?"
"A sixteen-year-old girl who tried to escape Marcus's trafficking business five years ago. Marcus killed her and made sure I knew it was my fault for trying to help her."
I finished treating Martinez and looked around for other injured people. Deputy Morrison was helping two locals who'd been shot during the firefight. Old Hank the fisherman was sitting against a rock, holding his arm and looking pale.
"Agent Martinez, I need to get my recordings to the FBI instantly. They prove Marcus has been working with a criminal group based in Seattle."
"What kind of organization?"
"The kind that moves hundreds of girls through West Coast ports every year. Marcus wasn't just a crooked sheriff. He was part of something much bigger."
I ran over to help Hank, who had a bullet wound in his wrist. Nothing major, but it needed cleaning and bandaging. "Doc Archer," Hank whispered, "I should've helped you stop Marcus years ago. I knew what he was doing to those girls, but I was too scared to speak up."
"Hank, we were all scared. But we're not scared anymore."
As I worked on Hank's wound, I thought about all the girls I'd treated over the past five years. Broken bones, rope burns, drug injuries, and worse things I tried not to remember. Every time Marcus brought me a girl who'd been "hurt in an accident," I knew the truth but stayed quiet.
"Hank, do you remember Jennifer Walsh?"
"The girl who supposedly fell down the courthouse steps three years ago?"
"She didn't fall. Marcus pushed her because she found out about the shipping plans. I treated her before she died, and she told me Marcus was going to move six girls to Seattle the next week."
"Did you record that conversation?"
"I recorded everything, Hank. Every confession, every threat, every detail about how the plan worked."
Agent Martinez had been listening to our talk. "Doc, we need those records right now. If Marcus was working with people in Seattle, they might already be planning to kill witnesses."
"The records are in my clinic. Hidden in a safe behind my medical papers."
"How much evidence do you have?"
"Five years' worth. Conversations, medical records, pictures of injuries, and shipping papers Marcus showed me when he was drunk and bragging about his success."
Agent Martinez tried to stand up, but I pushed him back down. "Agent, you're not walking anywhere with that shoulder wound. You need surgery."
"Doc, we don't have time for surgery. Marcus just died in a boat explosion, and his partners might be planning to clean up all the loose ends."
That's when I heard helicopter rotors coming. Medical helicopters, finally. "Agent Martinez, the medical helicopters are here. I'm going to get you and Agent Thompson to the hospital, and then I'm going to give the FBI everything I have."
"What about Elena and Agent Kim?"
I looked toward the harbor, where searchlights were searching the water for survivors from Marcus's boat. "They can take care of themselves. Right now, my job is saving the people I can save."
The medical helicopters arrived in the clearing, and paramedics jumped out with stretchers and equipment. I helped load Agent Thompson and Agent Martinez, giving the paramedics specific information about their injuries.
"Doc," Martinez called out as they loaded him into the chopper. "Those recordings you have - are you sure they prove Marcus was working with people in Seattle?"
"I'm sure. Marcus used to brag about his boss in Seattle who paid him bonuses for finding the prettiest girls. He called him Mr. Chen, and he said Chen had businesses in five different states."
Agent Martinez's face went pale. "Doc, did you say Chen?"
"Yes. Marcus said Chen was the one who taught him how to move girls without getting caught. Why?"
"Because Tommy Chen runs the biggest crime network on the West Coast. If Marcus was working for Chen, then this operation is about to get much more risky."
The helicopter took off, carrying Agent Martinez to the hospital. I watched it disappear into the night sky, then headed back to my clinic to get the proof that might save hundreds of innocent girls.
But as I walked through the town, I noticed something that made my blood run cold. Black SUVs were parked on three different streets, and guys in dark suits were watching my clinic from the shadows.
Tommy Chen's people had already arrived in Moonfall Bay.
I had a choice. I could run home, pack my bags, and disappear like I'd been planning to do for five years. Or I could walk into my clinic, knowing Chen's men were waiting for me, and hand over proof that might get me killed but would definitely save lives.
I thought about Sarah Mitchell, the sixteen-year-old girl who'd died because I was too scared to help her five years ago. I thought about all the girls Marcus had trafficked while I stayed quiet and gathered evidence I was too cowardly to use.
Then I thought about Amy Rodriguez, who'd trusted me enough to ask for help despite being beaten and frightened.
I walked straight toward my clinic, where Tommy Chen's assassins were ready to kill me.
But this time, I wasn't running away from the truth.
I was walking toward it with five years of proof that could destroy the entire Pacific Northwest trafficking network.
As I reached for the clinic door, I heard footsteps behind me in the darkness.
"Dr. Archer," a voice said quietly. "Mr. Chen would like to have a word with you."
