Chapter 79 Chapter Seventy-nine
Mate? What do you mean mate?” Kallum asked, his eyes narrowed. The Alpha, Drex, slowly turned his head towards him.

“Who the fuck are you?”he asked. Alaric was already giving him eyes, trying to tell him to back off but he pointedly ignored him.
He paused before speaking. Who was he to her?

“I'm her boyfriend,” he said, deciding to use the human term. It was simpler than explaining whatever was really going on between them.

Drex scoffed. “She’s my mate. I don't expect a vampire like you to understand. Whatever you two had is over now. She's mine.”

Kallum growled. He turned his attention to Wren who looked considerably pale. Her eyes flitted between the two of them but he didn't miss the way she was looking at Drex.

“Are you certain? Surely a lowly half-breed can't be your mate.” Arya said. Drex didn't even bother gracing that question with an answer.

“What's your name?”he asked Wren, his tone considerably softer.

“Wren,” she mumbled, not meeting his eyes. Kallum knew she didn't like the way she was now the centre of attraction.

“How does this even work? How are you sure she's your ‘mate’?” He crossed his arms.

Drex turned to him sharply, and gave him a look that suggested he was interrupting. Not that Kallum gave a fuck.

“Mates are assigned from birth, given to us by the mother.”

“Exactly. You can agree, Arya, that this is a sign from her. She's already favoured me. I'm going to win.”

“By giving you a half-breed for a mate? That's hardly a blessing.”

“Say that one more time…”

“Or what? What are you going to do, Drex?” There was a challenge in Arya's eyes.

Wren ran out of the living room.

“Look, you've scared her off.” Drex said. He turned to Caleb pointing a finger at him. “I don't know who made you game master but you don't tell me what to do. If I can't use everyone in my pack then you can't use vampires.”

Drex didn't wait for Caleb to respond before he walked out. Kallum was itching to leave too, to go in search for Wren but knowing her, she wasn't going to be found except that was what she wanted, so he stayed put.

“Now, where were we? Yes, Amara and the moonstone. You vampires can focus on killing her while we focus on getting the moonstone. There's something else though. When Amara took the throne, only the King and Queen were killed. The princess is still missing.”

“And that helps us how?” Azriel asked.

“Amara has no right to the throne if the princess is still alive. We need to find her so we can at least try to limit Amara's power. I want to get to her before Amara does.”

“We have two weeks until the next full moon. All our plans should have been executed before then.” said Bradley.

Caleb nodded. “Precisely. We should be heading to Diamond Ridge tomorrow or the day after.”

Kallum only half listened to what they were saying. All he wanted to do was to find Wren. What if Drex found her first? What if he tried to brainwash her with this mate nonsense? Vampires didn't typically have mates like werewolves did but from what he had seen between Briar and Alaric, it was strong and Wren might not be able to resist. Did he even stand a chance?

Mate

Wren couldn't get that word out of her head. She had never even considered the thought of ever having a mate. Much less to an Alpha. She bit her lip. The thought of him was already sending shivers down her spine.

“Why did you run?”

She squeaked, startled by the sudden voice. Drex was standing, hands in his pockets, by one of the trees in the garden of Alpha Caleb's mansion, where Wren had decided to hide.

“How did you find me?” She was sure she was well hidden.

“I'm your mate. You can't run from me.”

True.

“So you're a crossbreed then?”he said, stalking closer.

“Yes. I'm half human.” Wren said, carefully watching his expression. Maybe he would reject the mating bond.

“If you think that's going to stop me from claiming you, then you're wrong.” He was standing directly in front of her now, his scent overriding her senses. She could hardly think straight. She had to strain her neck to look up at him.

He took her chin in his hand, tilting it. “It's high time my pack had a Luna.”

“What?!”Wren sputtered. She took a step back.

“What, you don't want that?”

“This…this is all happening too fast. I need time to process it.”

“Process what? The fact that we've been chosen to be together? You're a werewolf. The concept of mates is obviously not new to you.” His expression hardened. “Or are you still thinking about that vampire? I'm tempted to kill him for touching what was mine.”

Her heart skipped a beat at the mention of Kallum. Just when things were starting to open up between them. She couldn't refuse the bond though. That would cause her unimaginable pain and agony which she wasn't ready for at the moment.

“I'm not thinking about him.”

“Then there's nothing to process. You're coming with me to Diamond Ridge and I'll introduce you to my pack.”

His pack. Her mate's pack. A pack where she would be Luna. A pack where she would rule. It was honestly a big fuck you to Arya and all the other wolves of Stone Haven who'd thrown her out. If only her mother could see her now.

“Okay. I'll come with you.”
