Chapter 101 Selene moves in
Chapter 101
DARIUS
My phone rang far too early that morning, pulling me from the first decent sleep I had managed in weeks. I groaned and reached for it blindly, squinting at the screen through bleary eyes. Unknown number.
Something in my gut told me to answer it anyway, though I could not explain why. I swiped to accept the call and brought it to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Good morning, darling." Selene's sickeningly sweet voice poured through the speaker. "I am at the academy main gate right now. I would very much like you to come pick me up and help me get settled in."
I sat up so fast the room spun slightly. "Are you completely out of your mind?"
"Excuse me?" Her tone shifted immediately to offense.
"Go see the administrator," I snapped, not caring how rude I sounded. "Get your keys and room assignment and everything else you need from them. Then move into your room like every other normal student. Stop bothering my life, Selene."
"But I thought as your fiancée, you would want to—"
I cut the call before she could finish that sentence, throwing my phone down onto the bed with more force than necessary. I dropped my head into my hands and let out a long, frustrated sigh. "Why is everyone just constantly trying to piss me off lately?"
Dorian, who had apparently been awake this entire time watching from his own bed, spoke up. "You should probably go pick her up anyway."
I lifted my head to glare at him. "Absolutely not."
"The next call is going to be from your father," Dorian pointed out reasonably. "And you know exactly what will happen if he finds out you treated your fiancée this way. Is it really worth the punishment?"
"I do not care," I muttered stubbornly, though we both knew it was a lie.
"Yes, you do care," Dorian countered, sitting up properly now. "I am tired of seeing you come back to school battered and badly wounded after visiting your father, Darius. Every time you go home lately, you return looking worse. Stop being so stubborn and trying to rebel against him constantly."
"So I should just roll over and accept everything he demands?" I challenged.
"No," Dorian replied calmly. "But pick your battles. He is stronger than you right now. Wait until you are in a better position before directly challenging his authority. Build your own power base first."
I glared at him, hating that he was making sense even as fury burned in my chest.
Then my phone rang again. We both looked at it.
Dorian moved faster than I expected, snatching the phone before I could stop him. He answered with false cheerfulness. "Hello? Oh hi, Selene. Darius is in the bathroom right now, but he will absolutely be there to pick you up shortly. Yes, of course. See you soon."
He ended the call and tossed my phone back to me. "There. Now you have to go."
"You are completely insane," I said. "I am not going anywhere."
Dorian stood and started getting dressed. "Fine. Then I will go pick her up myself and explain to your father why you refused."
I knew a threat when I heard one. Cursing under my breath, I dragged myself out of bed. "You are not going anywhere. I will pick her up myself since you seem determined to make my life more difficult."
"I am coming with you," Dorian announced. "I do not trust you to actually be civil to her without supervision."
We both got ready quickly and made our way to the main gate where Selene was waiting with several expensive-looking suitcases. She brightened immediately when she saw us approaching.
"There you are," she cooed, linking her arm through mine before I could stop her. "I was starting to think you had forgotten about me."
"That would have been preferable," I muttered, too quietly for her to hear clearly.
We accompanied her to the administrator's office where she handled the official transfer paperwork. I tried not to pay attention to the process, scrolling through my phone whilst they sorted everything out.
Then the administrator announced her room assignment, and my blood ran cold.
"You will be in room 214 with Samantha and Ravenna."
I looked up sharply. "That cannot be right. There must be other available rooms."
The administrator checked his records. "That is the only room with an open bed at the moment. Unless you would like to wait for reassignment, which could take several weeks."
"We can't wait," I started to say, but Selene cut me off.
"Is that not the human girl's room?" she asked with false innocence. "The one you were partnered with for that festival? I would absolutely love to stay there. I might learn a thing or two from Ravenna about how she managed to win your heart so effectively."
Both Dorian and I stared at her, alarm bells ringing loudly in my head. This was deliberate. She wanted to be in that room for a reason, and it had nothing to do with learning from Ravenna.
But I could not figure out how to refuse without making things worse, so I kept my mouth shut whilst we followed Selene to the dormitory.
When we reached room 214, only Samantha was inside. She looked up when we entered, her expression immediately shifting to something carefully neutral when she saw Selene. "You must be the new roommate. Welcome."
The smile she gave was tight and completely fake.
I noticed immediately that she was pointedly ignoring Dorian's existence, not even glancing in his direction despite him standing right there.
"Where is Ravenna?" I asked, unable to stop myself.
"I do not know," Samantha replied coolly.
"You are lying," I challenged. "You and Ravenna are best friends. There is no way she would leave without telling you where she was going."
Samantha's expression shifted into something wicked and satisfied. She grinned at me in a way that made me deeply uncomfortable. "Then why don't you not come over here and force the information out of me? See how well that works for you."
"Samantha—" Dorian started, but she cut him off with a sharp look.
"I have nothing to say to you either, Dorian. So do not even bother."
Dorian winced but backed off, clearly recognising a lost cause when he saw one.
Selene emerged from checking out the bathroom and bedroom area. "This will do nicely. Now, Darius darling, would you mind accompanying me to the female hockey team practice? I need to register and introduce myself to my new teammates."
I groaned audibly, the sound escaping before I could stop it.
Dorian nudged me hard in the ribs, his expression screaming behave yourself.
I glared at him but followed when Selene grabbed my hand and started pulling me towards the door.
In the corridor, she leaned close and whispered, "You really should be sweeter to me when we are in public, darling. You never know who might be recording or watching. Would you want everything to come out into the light? You not loving me?"
Something inside me snapped. I grabbed her chin firmly, forcing her to look directly at me whilst my eyes flashed gold. "Never in your life should you try threatening me, Selene. I promise you will regret it if you do."
Then I released her and walked off towards the hockey section, leaving her standing there looking shocked.
A few hours later, we all had classes. I was already in my seat when the classroom door opened and Ravenna walked in with Samantha beside her.
My breath caught painfully in my chest.
She was dressed in a mini black skirt that showed off her legs and a white crop top that hugged her figure perfectly, bringing out every curve. High black boots completed the outfit. Samantha wore a short flowery dress with matching boots.
Ravenna looked absolutely stunning. Hot in a way that made it physically difficult to look away.
Apparently, I was not the only one who thought so. Whispers filled the classroom. Male students openly stared, some not even trying to hide their appreciation.
Rage flooded through me so intensely that I slammed my hands down on the desk before I could stop myself. "Stop eye-fucking her," I snarled at the room in general.
The classroom went completely silent. Everyone stared at me in shock, including myself. I had not meant to say that out loud.
Ravenna's gaze shifted to me, one eyebrow raised in amusement. Then her attention moved past me to where Selene sat in the seat beside mine.
I watched Ravenna watching Selene, and something about her expression unsettled me deeply. There was no rivalry in her eyes. No jealousy or anger. Just cold calculation, like she was sizing up an opponent and determining the best strategy.
It made my skin prickle with unease.
Class proceeded in tense silence. I could barely concentrate on anything the professor was saying, too aware of Ravenna sitting a few rows away looking like that and watching Selene with that calculating expression.
Finally, mercifully, the lecture ended. Students began packing up their belongings and filing out.
Before I could move, Ravenna stood and walked directly towards where Selene and I sat. My entire body tensed, preparing for confrontation or anger or some kind of scene.
But what came out of her mouth was completely unexpected.
"Congratulations on the engagement, Selene," Ravenna offered with what sounded like complete sincerity. "I hope you and Darius will be very happy together.”
