Chapter 165 The Second Shattering
Chapter 165 The Second Shattering
(Isabella’s POV)
The moment Alexander’s phone buzzes, I know something is wrong—terribly wrong. He freezes, mid-step, staring at the screen as if the message reached out and gripped him by the throat.
“Alexander?” I whisper. “What is it?”
He doesn’t answer.
His jaw clenches.
His breathing changes.
The color drains from his face.
He turns the screen slowly toward me.
A single message.
From an unknown number.
“Check your private vault. You missed something. Tick-tock.”
My stomach drops. “No… no, no—Alexander, what does that mean? Your vault is supposed to be—”
“Secure,” he finishes hollowly. “Only I can access it.”
But the look in his eyes tells me something much worse:
Whoever sent this… knows him. Knows his past. Knows us.
“Get your things,” he murmurs. “We’re leaving.”

The Drive
The car is silent except for the soft hum of the engine. Rain hits the windshield in steady, anxious taps. Alexander grips the wheel with a force that turns his knuckles white. His mind is racing—I can feel it, see it, hear it in the clipped breaths he takes.
“Talk to me,” I finally say.
He shakes his head. “I told no one about that vault—not even Sebastian. Not even Vincent knew the full details.” His voice cuts like broken glass. “But someone does. Someone who wants to play.”
“And they’re using your trauma against you,” I whisper.
He doesn’t deny it.
When we reach the hidden underground facility—one I only saw once before, during the darkest moment in this journey—my skin prickles. Something about the cold air, the sterile walls, the scent of metal and electricity brings back memories that still choke me.
Alexander walks ahead. His shoulders are rigid. The doors recognize his biometrics and slide open.
A gust of cold air hits us.
The vault sits in the center of the room like a steel monolith, swallowing the light around it.
Alexander hesitates.
“Alexander?” I touch his hand.
“I’m fine,” he lies.
But he’s shaking.
He presses his palm to the scanner, and the heavy vault door unlocks with a hiss.
Inside… everything looks untouched.
Documents. Drives. Weapons. Files on past threats. Emergency protocols.
But then I notice something off.
A small flash drive sitting on top of a sealed lockbox.
Black.
Unmarked.
Not his.
Alexander sees it the same moment I do.
His face hardens. “That wasn’t there.”
Fear slams into my chest.
“Don’t touch it,” I whisper.
He touches it anyway.

The Video
We’re back upstairs, the flash drive plugged into a secured system.
One file.
Video.
No name.
He clicks play.
Static floods the screen before clearing into an image that freezes my blood.
A dark room.
A single chair.
A masked figure—same voice modulation used by the person who taunted Alexander before.
“Hello, Mr. Blackwood,” the distorted voice purrs.
Alexander stiffens.
“You’ve been distracted,” the figure continues. “By your lover. By your reconciliation with the Leclairs. By your attempts at redemption.”
My heartbeat slams painfully.
“But while you were busy trying to change…”
The masked head tilts.
“…your past was watching.”
Alexander’s jaw twitches.
“You think you’ve buried everything? Your secrets? Your mistakes? Your sins?”
The masked figure laughs—a low, sharp rasp that fills the room like poison.
“Sweet Alexander… I know more about you than you know yourself.”
Alexander leans forward, knuckles braced on the table. “Show your face. Right now.”
The figure ignores him.
“In your vault,” they continue, “you keep items connected to the people you’ve destroyed.”
I suck in a breath.
Destroyed?
He never told me—
“We both know you’re not the saint she thinks you are.”
My blood runs cold.
“Don’t listen to this,” I whisper, reaching for him.
He flinches away.
The masked figure goes on, “You’ve lied to her about many things.”
Alexander’s eyes close for one moment—the first sign of real pain, real vulnerability.
“And now,” the figure finishes, “the truth will destroy you more beautifully than I ever could.”
The video ends.
Silence punches the air out of my lungs.
Alexander doesn’t move.
His hands curl into fists. His breathing grows erratic. For a terrifying second, I think he might break—truly break.
“Alexander,” I whisper. “Look at me.”
He doesn’t.
He stares at the blank screen like it holds everything he’s been running from.
Then—
“I need… air.”
He walks out before I can grab him.
\---
Alexander Unravels
I find him upstairs, gripping the balcony railing so hard I fear the metal might bend.
Rain pours down. He lets it soak him, head bowed, chest rising unevenly.
“Talk to me,” I plead softly.
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.”
He shakes his head. “You don’t understand, Isabella. There are things I did—things I hid—not out of malice but survival. If you knew—”
“I want to know,” I whisper.
“No,” he snaps—sharp, pained. “You don’t.”
I step closer.
“Alexander, I love you—”
“Don’t say that right now.” His voice is raw.
“Why?”
“Because I might not deserve it.”
My heart cracks.
“You don’t get to decide that for me,” I say firmly.
He laughs, but it’s broken. “You’re too good. You’re too… hopeful. You look at me and see someone worth saving.”
“Because you are.”
He turns, eyes blazing with a mixture of anguish and fury.
“No, Isabella. I am someone with blood on my hands.”
My breath stutters—but I don’t move.
“I’ve protected people in ways that weren’t… clean. I kept evidence. Information. Contingency plans. I lived my life expecting betrayal.” He swallows hard. “And now someone who knows the deepest parts of that life is back.”
“Then we face them,” I say.
He lets out a humorless sound. “You shouldn’t have to face my demons.”
“And you shouldn’t have to face them alone.”
For a moment, I think he might push me away again.
Instead, he grips my face and crashes his forehead to mine.
“I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that,” he murmurs. “If they expose what I’ve done…”
I lift his face.
“Whatever it is, whatever you did—we deal with it together.”
His breath shudders.
Then he kisses me—desperate, searching, almost painful—as if he’s terrified it might be the last time.
When he finally pulls away, there’s something dark, determined in his eyes.
“They want to drag me into the past?” he whispers. “Fine.”
He steps back, shoulders straightening.
“Then I’ll walk into it.”
I grab his arm. “Not without me.”
His gaze softens.
“Not without you,” he agrees.

Later That Night
We’re in his private study. Rain still clings to his hair. He’s calmer, but something is different—like a part of him slipped back into the version he once was.
Dangerous.
Calculated.
Prepared for war.
He opens the lockbox from the vault—the one the flash drive was placed on.
Inside are files. Old. Yellowed. Marked with names.
Some crossed out.
Some not.
“Alexander…” I whisper.
“These are the people who tried to destroy my family before I ever stepped into the spotlight,” he murmurs. “People who threatened to expose secrets that weren’t just mine. I kept records because if they resurfaced, I needed leverage.”
“And now someone found out,” I say.
“Yes.”
He closes the box slowly.
Then turns to me.
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
My pulse races.
“This is the truth I’ve kept hidden,” he says softly. “The truth they might use against me.”
I nod, bracing myself.
He opens his mouth—
A loud bang echoes through the house.
We both freeze.
Another bang.
Closer.
Alexander’s eyes widen.
“They’re here.”
\---
The Intrusion
Alarms begin screaming.
Alexander grabs my hand. “Stay behind me. Don’t argue.”
“I won’t.”
Armed guards rush down the hall, shouting. Lights flicker. Doors lock. Security barriers drop. The house becomes a fortress.
But whoever broke in…
They got this far.
Alexander pulls me behind a corner as footsteps approach—steady, unhurried, taunting.
Then a voice fills the hallway.
A voice neither of us expected to hear.
“Miss me, Alexander?”
Alexander goes still.
My heart stops.
The voice is smooth. Familiar.
A ghost from the early-mid chapters.
One we thought was gone.
Alexander’s chest rises sharply—rage and disbelief merging into something lethal.
“I killed you,” he whispers.
A laugh echoes back.
“Clearly not well enough.”
I grip Alexander’s arm.
“Who is it?” I breathe.
He answers, voice barely above a whisper—
“Lucien.”
My blood runs cold.
Lucien—the one who orchestrated the first attack, vanished, presumed dead.
Alexander steps forward, voice tremoring with fury. “Show yourself.”
Lucien steps into view, unmasked, soaked from the rain, eyes glittering with madness and triumph.
“Hello, old friend.”
Alexander lunges—
“Alexander!” I shout, grabbing him just in time.
Lucien smirks. “Aw, still relying on her to hold you back? How adorable.”
Alexander growls like he’s ready to tear him apart.
Lucien lifts a phone.
“And now… the game really begins.”
He hits play.
A recording plays.
Alexander’s voice.
Cold.
Deadly.
Talking about leverage. Destruction. Revenge.
Taken out of context. Twisted.
My heart slams against my ribs.
Alexander whispers, horrified, “Isabella, I didn’t—That recording is—”
Lucien cuts in.
“Oh, she’ll hear the whole thing soon enough. So will the world.”
Then he turns and runs.
Alexander bolts after him.
“Alexander!” I shout.
But he’s already gone.
The last thing I hear before the alarms swallow the house is his furious, broken roar—
“LUCIEN!”
And just like that…
Everything shatters again.
