what she endured
what she endured
Dominic’s P.O.V.
I was so nervous that I had this urge to bite my nails, but I resisted it while watching the doctor check on Violet. We took her to the hospital when the pain suddenly intensified. They immediately admitted her after doing a quick scan.
Violet was now sleeping, but her face was still pale, and the numbers on the vital monitor were still a little elevated.
After finishing her check-up, the doctor instructed the nurse in a few things before coming to me. Victoria, who was standing right behind the doctor, immediately approached Violet.
“The fetus is stable, Mr. Whitemore. Her blood pressure is slightly raised, but she will be okay after a good rest. This is what we are hoping for now,” Her OB, Doctor Maria Wilson, told me while removing her glasses.
“The pain in her abdomen?” I asked her anxiously. I couldn’t describe how frightened I was when she suddenly went pale after my little stunt.
I only wanted to tease her a little, but it backfired, and the sudden deterioration in her condition scared me to death.
“That was because of a sudden escalation in her emotional turmoil. You guys need to be careful about her emotional instability. The fright triggered her mind, which led to an emotional turmoil. This is not good. Either she experienced something worse in the past or she has problems with loud and sudden voices. I have seen her previous pregnancy papers. I told her that she needs to stay calm all the time, as this can be a high-risk pregnancy for her because of the previous case. You need to be cautious, Mr. Whitemore.” She replied, but the warning hidden in her statement was clear to me.
“I understand, doc.” I replied in a stiff voice. Violet told me that everything is okay. She never told me those things. I guess she still didn’t trust me as much as she trusted me back then.
She nodded and then walked out of the room.
Victoria was still sitting on the stool near the bed, holding Violet’s hand.
Their bond was stronger than my bond with Violet. It made me envious sometimes, but I was glad that Victoria was with Violet all the time.
She found her, provided her the emotional support, made her overcome her fears, and built a life for herself and for Natalie.
All the time when I was absent from their lives, Victoria was there.
“Victoria.” I called her softly when I heard her sniffing.
“Don’t, Dom,” she raised her hand while stopping me in a stern voice.
“You don’t know how many nights I stayed awake, holding her tightly in my embrace to make her feel safe. You don’t know how close she was to loose her sanity while carrying Natasha. You only have ideas, but not the facts.” She added in a stern voice, but her voice cracked a bit.
She was still looking at Violet. She held Violet tightly all the way to the hospital. I couldn’t tell who was more in pain and scared, Violet or Victoria.
“When you threw her out, Sara sent a few men after her. They chased her when she called me for help. But to our bad luck, she lost everything during her run. I don’t know how she managed to get away from them and escape from the city. She hid inside a grocery truck to get out of the city. Can you imagine that? A pregnant woman, hiding among the crates for a few hours? I searched so hard but couldn’t find her. When Michael contacted Jorden, we both almost ran to find Violet. What we saw.” She paused in the middle of the sentence, her lips quivered, and her shoulders shook badly.
Every word coming out of her mouth was like a stab to my chest.
“She was covered with so many wounds all over her body, clothes torn, almost a skeleton, and hair dried and grey as if it had never been touched by the water. She was severely malnourished, anemic, traumatized, and highly cautious. She… she couldn’t even close her eyes while sleeping, Dominic. Can you imagine that? Because of her mental instability, she was about to miscarriage. She was five months pregnant at that time, but the fetus was barely alive inside her. All because you trusted another woman over your own wife.”
I knew she didn’t mean to yell at me as it could startle Violet in her sleep, but she lost control over her emotions.
I couldn’t even breathe while listening to her. My eyes were now fixed on Violet’s sleeping face. Her face was still pale, but she was at ease.
“I am not telling you this to guilt trip you, Dominic. I am telling you to understand why Violet is emotionally this fragile.” She added in a choked voice this time.
I couldn’t utter a word in reply because my throat was completely clogged.
We heard a knock on the door, which made me blink away the tears that had filled my eyes. I sniffed a little and stepped away a little.
I have heard in the past that no matter what you do, your past will come back haunting you. I guess this is also called karma.
A nurse entered the room and administered something in the IV drip that was connected to Violet. The silence in the room was suffocating but I didn’t want to leave Violet.
Victoria slowly stood up and took a deep breath.
“Natasha is alone at home. I am going to her. Stay with her and please don’t do anything that triggers her again.” She instructed me in a choked and firm voice.
I only nodded in response; my eyes lowered in guilt this time.
She walked out of the room at a steady pace, and I sat down on the stool.
“I will come back in a few minutes, Mr. Whitemore. If she wakes up before that, please press the call button.” The nurse requested me after finishing her work.
I nodded in response and slowly took Violet’s hand on my side.
“I am sorry.” I whispered in a very low and shaky voice after the nurse went out.
“You suffered because of me. I can’t blame anyone else for what happened back then. I married you. Victoria is right. I trusted another woman but my wife. The blame is on me. I am really sorry.” I admitted everything without any hesitation, but it only increased my guilt.
Victoria didn't tell me a thing about what exactly happened to Violet after she left the city, but now I wanted to know. I wanted to know how badly I hurt her so that I could spend the rest of my life making amends.
I took my phone out and messaged my assistant immediately. I am sure that Michael would have done everything to erase those worse things, not only to prevent me from knowing the truth but also saving Sara.
