CHAPTER 195
CHAPTER 195
The night around the cabin was alive with sound.
Sirens wailed from every direction, cutting through the forest like warning cries. Red and blue lights strobed between the trees, flashing across bark and leaves, across weapons raised and boots planted firmly into the dirt. Police officers formed a wide semicircle around the cabin, rifles aimed, bodies tense, fingers resting dangerously close to triggers.
“ADRIAN REYES!” a voice boomed through a megaphone. “COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!”
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the cabin door creaked open.
Adrian emerged slowly, one arm locked tightly around Vincent’s neck, the gun pressed hard against his skin. Vincent’s posture was rigid, his jaw clenched, his breath shallow but controlled. Amelia walked beside them, her steps hesitant, her face streaked with dried tears, her hands still trembling from hours of fear.
“Everyone drop your weapons!” Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. “Every single one of you, or I swear I’ll kill him!”
The officers froze.
Several guns lowered instinctively. Others remained trained, unwilling to risk a sudden move. The standoff tightened, stretched thin as wire.
“Adrian,” the negotiator said calmly, stepping forward a fraction. “No one wants anyone hurt. Let the hostages go. We can talk.”
“There’s nothing to talk about!” Adrian screamed. “I’m not going to prison. I won’t rot in a cell for crimes I didn’t commit!”
Behind the police line, a figure broke free.
“Adrian!”
Viviana ran forward before anyone could stop her. She pushed past the officers, her coat flapping open, her hair disheveled, her face pale and desperate.
“Stop her!” someone shouted.
But it was too late.
Viviana stopped several feet in front of Adrian, standing squarely between the police and the man holding her father hostage.
“Adrian, please,” she cried. “This has gone too far. You can still stop. You can still come back alive.”
Adrian’s eyes flickered toward her, confusion and fury warring in his expression. “Get back,” he snapped. “This doesn’t concern you anymore.”
“It does!” Viviana sobbed. “I know you used me. I know you never loved me the way I loved you. But I love you anyway.”
Amelia sucked in a sharp breath.
“I’m carrying your baby,” Viviana said, clutching her stomach instinctively. “Please. For our child. For my father. We can figure this out.”
The clearing fell eerily silent.
Adrian’s grip faltered for half a second.
“I’m not going to prison,” he said hoarsely. “It’s either they let me walk away with Vincent… or everybody dies.”
Vincent felt the gun press harder against his skin.
In that instant, a single thought cut through his fear.
This ends now.
He moved.
Vincent twisted sharply, driving his elbow backward into Adrian’s ribs with everything he had left. The movement was sudden, desperate, fueled by the knowledge that this was the only chance they would get.
Adrian cried out.
The gun jerked.
A deafening crack split the air.
Everything froze.
For a heartbeat, no one understood what had happened.
Then Viviana screamed.
She collapsed to the ground, blood spreading rapidly across her blouse, staining the dirt beneath her. Her body hit the forest floor hard, her breath coming out in a broken gasp.
The sound of the gunshot echoed through the clearing, sharp and final.
For a heartbeat, no one moved.
“Viviana….!” Adrian screamed.
The gun slipped from his hand as he dropped to his knees beside her, his hands hovering helplessly over her blood-soaked blouse. His face crumpled, panic tearing through him with terrifying speed.
“No, no, no,” he gasped, pressing his hands uselessly against her wound. “Viviana, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to…. I swear I didn’t mean to.”
Her eyes fluttered weakly.
“Oh God,” he sobbed. “Please don’t die. Please. Look at me. Stay with me.”
He turned wildly toward the police, his voice breaking completely. “Help her! What are you standing there for? Help her!”
Officers surged forward, weapons lowered now, urgency replacing aggression.
“She can’t die,” Adrian cried, tears streaming down his face. “She’s pregnant. She’s carrying my baby. Please…please save her.”
Hands grabbed his arms, pulling him back, but he didn’t resist. Not even a little.
“Just help her,” he begged as the handcuffs snapped around his wrists. “I don’t care what you do to me. Just help her.”
Medics dropped to their knees beside Viviana, working quickly, calling out vitals, pressing gauze to the wound.
Adrian watched them in horror, completely broken now, his shoulders shaking as he whispered over and over, “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
He didn’t fight when officers hauled him to his feet.
He didn’t look away when they dragged him back.
His eyes never left Viviana.
“She’s alive!” one of them yelled. “Pulse is weak but present!”
Amelia broke free then, running forward until Matteo caught her.
She crashed into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably, clutching his jacket as if he were the only solid thing left in the world. Matteo wrapped her tightly in his arms, holding her so fiercely it was almost painful.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered over and over. “I should never have let you walk out of that building alone. I should have….”
She shook her head violently against his chest. “No. No, it’s not your fault. None of this is your fault.”
They clung to each other, crying openly, unashamed, the kind of reunion that only happens when you are certain you almost lost someone forever.
Vincent was already kneeling by Viviana’s side. His hands hovered helplessly near her blood-soaked blouse, his face drained of color as he watched the medics work on her.
“Viviana,” he whispered urgently. “Stay with me. Please, stay with me.”
He looked up at the paramedics, his voice shaking for the first time that night. “She’s my daughter,” he said. “Please…do everything you can.”
When they lifted her onto the stretcher, Vincent stayed close, walking beside them until the ambulance doors closed, his breath uneven, his eyes never leaving her face.
Only then did he step back, his shoulders sagging under the weight of everything he had almost lost.
“Is she going to be okay?” Amelia asked suddenly, pulling back just enough to look at Matteo. “Viviana… is she going to live?”
Matteo glanced toward the ambulance where medics worked frantically. “They’re taking her to the hospital now,” he said softly. “I’ll drive there after this. I’ll make sure she gets the best care possible.”
Amelia nodded weakly, tears spilling again.
The ambulance doors slammed shut, siren blaring as it sped off into the night.
Adrian was hauled to his feet, his face hollow, eyes empty, the fight completely gone from him.
As police cars pulled away and the forest slowly returned to silence, Matteo tightened his hold on Amelia once more.
“You’re safe now,” he whispered.
