Chapter 41 Are You Okay

Chapter 41 Are You Okay
Omniscient Narrative

As the festivities continued, Kai felt the firelight's warmth and the laughter of friends wrapping around him, but the tension fissured like a crack in fragile glass.

He swizzled his drink nervously, casting cautious glances toward Aries, who was now entrenched in conversation with Derek.

'What is Aries trying to do?'

'When did he even walk over to him?'

Kai thought, feeling the anxiety deepen like a pit in his stomach.

He wanted to walk up to them and stop the conversation but he knew it would cause a scene, so he chose to stand there and watch the interaction instead.

His thoughts became a storm, and he lost himself in trying to find a reprieve from the brewing chaos that wanted to ensnare him. Looking over at Austin, he settled on the idea. Perhaps he could retreat to family gatherings, divert discussions to anything but the lingering shadows.

Yet the knot of anxiety never ended, and every time he felt warmth reflected in the conversations around him, the unsettling whirlwind continued to swirl harder.

"Hey, what's up?" Vincent approached, breaking Kai from his thoughts as he leaned against the side of the porch.

"Nothing, just taking it all in," Kai replied, forcing a smile. "Our son is no longer a baby" he could feel the tears filling in his eyes.

"Everyone looks like they are having a great time! Let's not forget to enjoy ourselves," Vincent replied, laughter shaking his shoulders.

Kai nodded mechanically, fighting to engage in the spirit of celebration. "Yeah, I suppose so," he said, eyes darting back to Derek and Aries as they continued to banter. The tension simmered, twisting like a ghost in the undercurrent.

"I just told a story about how Austin nearly set fire to the grill once," Vincent continued enthusiastically. "You should have seen the look of horror on his face!"

"Sounds like a classic," Kai remarked, half-hearted, as anxiety tucked away in the folds of his mind.

"Good times," Vincent replied, then turned to find Aries. "Looks like the kid is enjoying himself."

Kai sighed inwardly, the fear gnawing deeper, sinking into his gut like acid. It was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up the facade as even Vincent seemed oblivious to the truth unraveling before him.

The evening carried on, and Kai's thoughts continued to spiral, and as the night wore down, the flickering lights dimmed, giving way to more intimate gatherings under the stars. Fewer voices punctuated laughter as guests mingled, while some simply relaxed in cozy clusters.

Yet Aries remained a shadow, effortlessly drifting around the gathering and inserting himself into every conversation between Derek and the other guests.

With every wave of laughter, Kai's heart sank further—questions flickered in and out of shadows, and every glance shared between Aries and Derek now felt anxious with unspoken implications.

Curiosity pressed at the back of Kai's mind but hesitated before giving voice to fleeting thoughts.

"What about everyone else?" he finally managed, sidling closer to Austin. "Are they all having fun?"

"Yeah! This party is amazing, Dad!" Austin replied, beaming, joy radiating from him like warm sunshine. "Everyone is having fun and I love it, thank you dad!"

"Good." Kai let a sense of relief ebb through him. "Hey, let me grab you both a drink."

As he crossed the yard, he caught sight of Vincent whispering to Derek, laughter breaking the barrier of conversation that encircled them.

Every exchange he saw with Vincent and everyone other than him felt like layered blades sharpening, and questioning the nature of their conversation loomed like storm clouds overhead.

He grasped his drink firmly, forcing himself to breathe until he caught Aries watching him from afar, a knowing glint in his eye that sent chills racing down Kai's spine.

The boy was toying with him, playing with the connections that were slowly unraveling around them without much warning.

A sense of darkness gripped his chest as things began to spiral beyond his control. Kai felt an urge to confront the situation, desperate to untangle the threads binding together two worlds threatening to collide.

The night felt sacred—the laughter, the stories shared—but Aries was a looming specter; everything spun around him in ways that felt disjointed and raw.

"Hey, where's Austin?" Joey suddenly appeared by his side, looking up at Kai eagerly, the lighter energy grounding him momentarily.

"He's around somewhere, probably talking with his friends," Kai said, voice steadier than he felt.

"Thanks for hosting this! It's been amazing!" Joey said, his eyes sparkling bright on this special occasion. "It means a lot for both of us. Graduating feels surreal."

"It should—a major accomplishment for you two," Kai replied, a proud smile forming on his lips. "You both worked incredibly hard. I can only imagine what lies ahead."

Despite the turmoil surging within him, Kai found momentary comfort in the couple's celebration.

"Are you okay?" Vincent suddenly appeared by his side, concern etched on his face. "You seem distracted."

"I'm fine," Kai replied, panic creeping into his voice as he tried to shake off the worry. "It's just... a lot going on tonight, you know?"

Vincent nodded, his smile ever-present but with an undertone of confusion. "Let's just enjoy it. Just look at how happy they are."

Kai's worry intensified, creeping into every corner of his mind. It was dangerous to allow their happiness to blindside him from the truth lurking behind warm smiles. Every joke whispered between Derek and Aries stitched together uncharted territory, and he knew it required examination.

He watched as Aries approached Vincent, a strange grin on his lips. "Your barbecue skills are unparalleled," he declared, flashing a charming smile. "Not even the ribeye at the upscale restaurant compares!"

"Thanks Kid!" Vincent laughed, a genuine warmth enveloping his voice. "I'm just having some fun with it and I learnt from the best." He said pointing over to Derek who just dismissed him.

"It's nothing really" he let out a laugh before side hugging his little brother "our father loved to grill and he taught us everything we need to know about cooking" he squeezed his brother's shoulders making Kai roll his eyes at his brother.

"That's nice" was all Aries said before the place became awkward.

"I'll be right back," Vincent muttered, seeking out a moment of save away from the voice of others.

Kai turned to Derek as Aries also walked away to meet up with Joey and Austin. "You got a minute?" he asked

"Yess! Always happy to chat with you, Kai!" Derek replied, flashing that familiar, charming smile. "What's on your mind? Tell your big brother what's up"

"First of all, stop that, that's cringe and second of all I just wanted to check in, that's all," Kai began, feigning normalcy as he gestured toward the party. "What do you think of everything?"

"Oh, it's nice. Really great gathering!" Derek exclaimed, leaning casually against the table. But that lightness didn't relieve the building knots Kai continued to wrestle with. "You get your planning skills from mom that's for sure"

"Are you sticking around for a few days?" Kai ventured cautiously. "It's been a while since we've had some family time."

"Yeah," Derek replied, his voice shifting. "I thought I could catch up with everyone. I did miss the chance to see Austin graduate."

Kai nodded, unsure of how to lead the conversation without setting off warning bells. "I don't want to interrupt your fun if you're busy now, though."

"Not at all! What's eating at you?" Derek asked, uncertainty lacing his tone.

"Just feels like everything's... changing," Kai admitted, the words spilling out before he could reel them in. A lick of worry grazed the space where he hoped to find comfort.

"Change is a good thing," Derek assured, gaze locked onto Kai. "You know, life moves in unexpected directions. Embrace what's ahead."

"Yeah, I suppose," Kai said, uncertainty weaving its way in. "But some changes can feel a bit alarming."

Derek's eyes sharpened for a brief second as tension clouded the air. "Just be wary of what you let in. Sometimes there are secrets lying beneath solid ground."

Kai's breath hitched at the unexpected comment, he caught a glimpse of Aries out of the corner of his eye, still laughing with Austin and Joey.

"Before I lose you in this party," Derek chuckled, feigning lightness as he continued, "how are you feeling about Austin? It's an exciting time!"

"Proud, but it's bittersweet in a way," Kai replied, offering the briefest glimpse of vulnerability. "They're both stepping into the world, and it puts everything into perspective. I just want him to be happy, and I hope I've given him enough..."

Derek's gaze deepened as if he was examining Kai's every word, and suddenly he felt exposed. "You've done everything, Kai. Just remember that your worth isn't tied to others' perceptions. Whatever comes next, don't let outside distractions pull your heartstrings too easily."

"Easier said than done," Kai replied, masking his uncertainty with a forced smile. "But I'll keep that in mind."

Suddenly, Joey bounded up to them, Austin and Aries behind him. "Hey! We're about to cut the cake! You all should join before it's too late."

"I'll be right there!" Kai replied, a sense of relief washing over him as the focus shifted momentarily. He offered a tight-lipped smile as Aries's eyes found his before his son's eyes met his and he gave him a real smile

As they began to head toward the patio where the cake awaited, Kai caught a glimpse of Vincent chatting cheery with others, arms wide open, instantly drawing attention like a moth to light.

'He's so open with everyone but me' Kai couldn't help but be sad at the very friendly sight in front of him.

He's wished he could just go back to when he and Vinnie were just starting out their relationship and they were ever much in love with each other.

Now it just felt like they had to tolerate each other for the sake of their child.
