Caught
Abigail's POV
“Hey,” Baron greeted me with a smile and bent down to greet my son. “How are you, Ashton and Aiden?”
“We're good!” The kids answer in chorus before running inside his house, giggling.
I followed them inside and went to the living room; I sat down and felt comfortable again. It's been months since we started this game, and I'm glad to see him for a while.
“How have you been? I was surprised when you told me you'll pay a visit.”
“I'm surprised, too. Perhaps I'm exhausted with all the work I've been dealing with since we did this plan. Also, Ashton and Aiden have been looking for you since you moved out, and I can see how it affects them.”
He sighed softly, “I miss them too. We must sacrifice to achieve our goals even though it will be hard for both of us.”
“Yeah, you are right. Anyway, I came here purposefully because I want to speak with you personally. I also know that Hilary has been around you lately, so I can't just approach you whenever I want because she might think we still have a connection.”
“That is totally understandable. So, what do you want us to discuss? Don't tell me this is about the money stolen from the company?” Baron asked.
I scan the area to track if my son is around, and when I make sure my twins are busy playing in the backyard. I immediately look at Baron because there's something I must tell him, and he's the only person I trust.
“First, they want to apologize for stealing your private investigator. Second, I found out that Gerald has a mistress and is cheating with some girl that seems familiar to me. Third, I don't think I can trust my secretary anymore.”
“Why? Annie is a nice woman, and I ensured you have a trustworthy secretary, so what's the matter?” Baron inquired, wondering what was happening in the company while he was not around.
I exhaled and replied, “Yes, Annie is a nice girl. However, she seemed to be working for someone else, and I can't help but think it was Gerald.”
“Why did you think that?”
“I don't know. Maybe because Gerald is capable of seducing every woman he wants, and I'm one of those stupid women. Annie is a nice girl but naive; my ex-husband can easily fool her.”
“So, are you saying Gerald was using your secretary to spy on you?”
“Exactly. I know this is sudden and I shouldn't have suspected my secretary because you chose her for me. However, I can't help but think he already used his charm to manipulate Annie and use it against me.”
“I understand your doubt, Abigail. But are you sure about that?” He questions, leading me to confusion. I am confused by my suspicions these past few days; I couldn't trust anyone besides Baron.
My trust issues began when my father chose to believe those people who hurt and lied to me. I only trust myself and Baron. So, they can't blame me if I start suspecting every person I meet or run into.
Our attention was caught when his doorbell rang. Baron excused himself to answer the door; I nodded in response before leaning on the sofa. I need to relax from all the problems coming into my life like a flash, and I don't know how to handle everything.
“You have to leave,” I heard Baron talking to someone, and I got confused. “Why? Don't you miss me?”
Wait, is that a girl's voice?
I stood from the sofa and walked towards the door with tiny steps. My confusion became eager to know who he was talking to, especially since they became quiet until my eyes were exposed to unexpected events that made my heart skip.
“Baron,” I mumble, catching their attention. Baron immediately parted from Hilary's grasp.
She turned at me with a smile on her lips before putting her hands on her waist, staring at me from head to toe. “What are you doing here?”
I become silent and can't process the scene I just witnessed. Hilary was kissing Baron, locking him in her arms, and that scene weakened my knees. But I stand straight, showing no weakness to them.
I gulped, “My children want to see their father, so we visited him. I'm unaware that you're coming here, too.”
“Well, it wouldn't be a surprise if I told him, right?” She clung her arms to his neck, but Baron took it away, and I noticed how uncomfortable he was.
I focused my eyes on Hilary and asked, “What about you? What are you doing here?”
“Nothing. Just wanna know how my man is doing, and I can see you were trying to steal him from me…” she replied, raising an eyebrow at me.
I chuckled sarcastically, “Seriously? That's more important to you than checking on your son? Poor son of yours, Hilary. He was neglected by his mother, who was spending much more time to herself than her sick son.”
She crossed her arms and scoffed, “It doesn't mean my ex-husband asked for your help; you have the right to insult me. I'm busy working my a*s day and night to earn money for my son.”
“Liar,” I quickly answered.
“Enough, Abigail. You're just jealous because Baron is mine now.”
“Yours?” I laughed because she was being funny. I shook my head while wiping my eyes because I almost cried in laughter. “Oh, you're such a good liar.”
“What do you mean, Abigail?” Baron asked, perplexed.
“Gerald came to my doorstep, begging me to help him. It turns out the money you lend to Hilary for her ‘sick’ son is already wasted on her shopping.” I quickly noticed how Hilary's daring face became a scared cat. “Oh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have told him that, right? I mean, that's supposed to be a secret.”
Baron faces Hilary, enraged. “Is she telling the truth?”
Hilary chuckled nervously, “N-no. She's a great story maker, Baron. Why would you believe a woman who is no longer part of your life?”
“Where did you spend the money?” He asked, tempting himself.
“What'd you mean by that? Of course, I used it to pay for my son's medical expenses—”
“Another lie, Hilary.” I shook my head in disappointment before taking my purse and a hospital bill receipt I had paid for. “I pay your son's medical expenses, which cost me one hundred thousand dollars, which is fine. It's for your sick son, not for lavish things.” I stepped forward, “So, what did you pay for with the money Baron lent you? Hmm?”
She swallowed, clenching her jaw and fist in rage. “You—”
“Where did you spend the money, Hilary?” Baron asked once again.
“I already told you, Baron.”
“Enough with the lies, Hilary!”
“Mommy?” Ashton's voice made us turn behind me. I smiled and called my twins; they approached me. “Why is Daddy Baron mad?” Aiden asked.
I turned at them, “Nothing, baby. Let's go home. Your father and his girlfriend have important matters to discuss.”
“Abigail,” Baron stopped me.
I lean closer to his ear and whisper, “Deal with her, Baron. She can be a spy.” After that, we left and hopped to my car.
Baron and I exchanged glances before nodding at each other, and then, I drove my car away from his house when suddenly my phone rang.
I answer the call, “Any news for me, David?”
[Yes, Ma'am. Where do you want to meet?]
“I have a lot of things on my plate right now, so I don't have time to meet you. Tell me on the phone,” I said while driving.
[Okay. I found out who Gerald's mistress and the tenant are in room 105.]
“And?”
[You won't believe what I found.]
“What is it?”
[The tenant in room 105 and Gerald's mistress are the same.]
“Who is it?” I asked, intrigued.
He took a deep breath and replied, [Your secretary, Annie Brown.]
