35 - Swallowing his ego

At Abigail McAdams' Residence.

Gerald's Pov.

I parked my car outside and hopped out, approached the door, and pressed the doorbell two times. I glanced at my wristwatch while trying to calm myself from the distress I was facing, especially since my idiot wife was planning to kill our son and spend all the money she got from Baron. How stupid.

I have no idea why I married Hilary in the first place. Perhaps the child was the reason, and I didn't have a choice but to marry her to give Gio a perfect life. I pressed the doorbell again, and it didn't take seconds before someone answered the door, but my eyes immediately landed on two adorable kids before me.

“Hey, is your mom there?” I asked.

“Yes, she's asleep.”

“Uh, you must be Aiden.”

“No, I'm Ashton. He's Aiden,” he pointed at the kid beside him, watching me intently as if trying to figure out what I was doing.

“I see. You are so identical, and I couldn't figure out who Aiden and Ashton are. Anyway, can I come inside?” I requested.

Aiden shook his head, “No. Mom told us we can't let a stranger in.”

“Oh, no. I'm not a stranger. I'm your mommy's friend. You've already seen me before, remember?” I answered, trying to make these two kids remember that they already saw me before.

“He is right, Aiden. He was here before, and Daddy Baron yelled at him, remember?” Ashton reminded him of the most shameful time I ever had. “Come in,” Aiden ordered, and he was like an old man in his attitude.

I entered the house and went to the living room, where the couch was. I sat down and was startled to see these two kids standing on my side. I almost had a heart attack because of them, especially since they're not much of a talker and watching me quietly.

I smiled forcedly before clearing my throat and said, “So, are you already attending school?”

“Yes, we are.”

“I see. You know what? My son is one year younger than you, so I think you three will get along once he gets out of the hospital.”

“What happened to your son?” Ashton questioned, intrigued.

“Well, he's sick. That's why I came here because I need your mother's help, so can you get me your mother and tell her that I'm here?” I may sound pitiful to their ears, but I'm doing this for my son because my stupid wife doesn't want to help me.

“I'll get Mom!” Ashton exclaimed before running away, and I was shocked by his bubbly behavior.

Having Aiden by my side made me uncomfortable because he stared at me as if I had done something terrible. However, I need to act professionally and be cool in front of a kid because even though he's not talking, he seems to be interrogating me very quietly.

I was about to do the same when suddenly I remembered something. I would never get a chance after this, so I needed to know what I wanted to know. I need to take a risk and see if that risk is worth the shot.

“So, Aiden. Are you the oldest?” I question with a smile.

He nodded softly, “Yes.”

“You must be a brave brother because having a naughty twin brother is difficult, am I correct?” I joked.

“Not really, Mister. Ashton is naughtier than me, and I have to be this older brother my mother wants me to be because she's the only person taking care of us since Daddy Baron lives in a different house.”

I lean closer and whisper, “How close are you to your father?”

“Very close. Daddy Baron plays with us and always makes sure we're happy.”

There's no doubt that Baron was a good father because his children were complimenting him even though he was not around. But I'm wondering why these twins haven't inherited anything from him; they don't resemble him.

“You must really love your father,” I stated.

“We do, Mister. Our mother said that Daddy Barron will become our father when our biological father leaves us,” he replied, and those words made me stop.

I widened from what I heard and instantly turned back at him, “What did you say? I thought Baron was your real father.”

“No, Daddy Baron becomes my father when our father leaves us. Mommy said our father was already dead, so Daddy Baron became our father. Why are you asking anyway?” he suddenly asked, wondering cutely.

I shook my head before smiling at him and said, “Nothing.”

“Ashton, wait!” We turned on the stairs when we heard Abigail's voice and her son Ashton was running down the stairs too.

As soon as they reach the stairs, Abigail's smile immediately disappears. She pulled her son away from me and hid it behind her, making me suspect that she was lying to me.

“What are you doing here, Gerald? Didn't I tell you not to come here and wait for me in the office?” She began asking questions, but my attention wasn't on there; I needed to know the truth.

“Aiden, take your brother upstairs, and don't leave until I say so.”

“But Mommy! I want to play outside!” Ashton pouted, pointing to the front yard.

“Later, darling. My visitor and I need to discuss something, and kids are not allowed to hear it, so go upstairs and wait for me. Do you understand?” Abigail explains, facing her twins.

“Yes, Mommy!” Her twins rushed upstairs, and the moment they left, she walked towards me and said, “What do you need?”

“I came to ask for your help, but it seems like I need to know more about your twins.”

“Not this conversation again, Gerald. I already told you my twins belong to Baron, so stop thinking about my son. They are not yours because our son died five years ago. Do you even remember that?”

I scoffed, “You can't fool me, Abigail. I know the truth.”

“What are you even talking about?”

I moved forward and asked seriously, “Are they mine?”

“No,” she answered quickly.

“Be honest with me, Abby.”

“Why are you even asking me that question? I already answered you, so there's no need to repeat the same question that I already answered. If you don't stop, I'm not dealing with you today.” She was about to leave when I grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer to me, “They already told me that Baron isn't their biological father. Now, who is their father? Is it me, Abigail?”

She pulled her wrist away, staring at me thoughtfully, and replied, “You are not their father. That's all you need to know. Now, if you have nothing to say, you can leave and don't come back.”

“Wait, Abby!” I shouted, stopping her from leaving because what I found was less critical than my purpose. “What is it?”

“I need your help, please. I'm sorry for interfering in your private life again,” I apologize, hoping it would work and she will forgive me because I really need her help. “Fine. What do you need?”

“Can you come with me?”

“Why?”

I took a deep breath, “My son is sick, and you're the only person I know who can help me, Abigail. Please, I'll do anything for you to help me…”
