34 - Heartless mother
Hilary's Pov.
“Mom!” I shouted when I arrived at our house and handed the paper bags I was carrying.
My mother immediately ran towards me, checking the paper bags the maids were taking before looking at me in confusion. “What the hell is this, Hilary?”
“I went to the mall to buy you some new stuff so you won't bother me while I'm trying to win this game we're playing.”
She scoffed, “Seriously? I told you to find money for your son's medication!”
“I did. Baron gave me two hundred thousand dollars, and that's what I spent to buy the stuff that will motivate you to take care of my son.”
“Why did you spend the money on useless stuff instead of spending it on your son's medication?! Do you know how much pain he's in right now?!” She yelled, so I covered my ears because I couldn't stand it.
“Can't you just be happy because I bought you new clothes and jewelry using the money I got from Baron?” I asked.
“No! You're supposed to find money for your son's medication, but instead, you spend it all on this useless stuff for what?” She angrily replied.
I never saw my mother this unappreciative because she always appreciated the things I gave her, especially when it came to clothes and jewelry that were very expensive. Therefore, I don't know what's her deal. She's not usually like this.
“What's wrong with you, Mom?”
“No, Hilary. What's wrong with you?! How dare you spend the money on useless things that can save your son's life?! You are such an irresponsible mother!” She shouted.
I rolled my eyes and replied, “Fine. I promised to find money, but I didn't say it would be for that kid. I'm done becoming a good mother to the child I never own!”
After long years of enduring being a mother to a child, I never give birth to. Finally, it ends because all the hard work and sacrifices I provide to make Gerald stay by my side have paid off, especially since he's no longer after his wife. After all, he's after the money that belongs to us.
Now, it's time to end this ridiculous act and be myself.
“That child might not be yours, but it's your responsibility to keep him alive! I thought you had plans for that kid, but seeing how irresponsible you were made me think you no longer need that child.”
I scoffed, “Stop acting like you care, Mom. Aren't you the one who helped me steal that child? We both know who his mother is, and it's not taking too long for his biological mother to find out that my son is her son.”
“Even so, we need to save him. Don't you have a heart for an innocent child who got involved in our stupid plans?” She asked, making me think about that because I never thought about saving that child anyway.
“If you didn't pick a weak baby, maybe we don't have to face this kind of situation.”
Mom grabbed my arms tightly, telling me that she was not messing around anymore. “If your husband finds out that your son is not truly your son, he will hate you forever, and it will be the end of your fantasies. So, you better find a way, or else I will tell Gerald—”
“Tell him what, huh?”
She backfired and didn't say anything. I crossed my arms and said, “That's what I thought, Mom. You are involved in this problem, so help me deal with it, or you'll lose everything.”
“What got into you, Hilary? You change. You're no longer the sweet daughter I know. What is going on with you?” I asked.
I moved closer and said, “Villains are not born; they are made. You made me be like this, and now you're asking me what is happening to me. Why don't you ask yourself before asking me?”
“I may make terrible decisions in my life, but I did it for you—”
“Cut it out, Mom. I'm not your stupid daughter anymore. If you want that child to live, then find a way.”
I grew up without a father and learned everything from my mother, who taught me to be vigilant and choose who I can trust. She made me be like this. I grew up in a society where I can't get whatever I want if I become kind, so to have what I deeply desire, I need to change.
Stealing Gerald from the woman who doesn't deserve his love is the greatest thing I ever did, but taking care of a child that wasn't mine to make him stay is torture.
Silence prevailed between us, so I decided to end this conversation and turn my back to her when the maid rushed downstairs. She came to us, terrified, and we both were intrigued by her expression.
“Ma'am, your son!”
“What happened to Gio?” Mom asked.
“I was checking on him, and then I noticed how pale he was and not moving!”
“What?!” Mom shouted before glaring at me. “Look, what have you done to that child, Hilary? Is this how you wanted to avenge your ego?! Putting an innocent life in danger for your own good?!” Mom rushed upstairs and didn't waste any time.
I almost lost my balance, but thankfully, I managed to reach the wall and lean on it. My heart was beating faster, thinking if this was what I really wanted. Until a thought came in, making me realize that I was not doing anything wrong. That child was mine anyway, so what's the point of keeping him alive?
I stood straight before approaching the door when suddenly it opened, and I was surprised to see Gerald at the doorway.
“My love!” I rushed towards him happily, but he just passed me and hurriedly entered the house. “Hey, don't you see me?” I complain.
He stopped and looked at me, “What kind of mother are you, Hilary?”
“What?” I confusedly questioned.
Gerald slapped me, causing my lips to bleed and taste it. “You didn't tell me about Gio’s condition! Are you trying to kill our son?!” He shouted in rage.
“I was about to—”
“If something happened to my son, I will kill you, Hilary. You will face the consequences of whatever happens to Gio, and I promise to punish you!” He vowed before rushing upstairs, leaving me with fear and dumbfounded.
