Hilary's Pov

I escape that toxic room because I might get myself in huge trouble and humiliation if I remain inside, especially since Abigail keeps smirking at me. After all, she got me.

I exhaled deeply and walked to the hallway to find the restroom when suddenly, someone pulled me aside and pinned me on the wall. I was going to shout for help when Gerald covered my mouth instantly.

“Shut up!” He muttered before removing his hand from my mouth and looking at me disappointedly. “What the f*ck just happened in there, Hilary?”

“What'd you mean, hun? I didn't do anything.”

“Enough with the lies!” He exclaimed before wiping his face in annoyance and added, “Why the hell did you bid, Hilary? We don't have that kind of money! Do you know the shame you're putting us into?”

“Why are you stressed, hun? I will ask Baron for money, as simple as that,” I answered.

“That's not what I'm talking about! Do you think Baron was stupid?” He pointed at my temple and said, “You're not thinking! Abigail is doing this intentionally! Why are you such an idiot?!” He shouted in rage.

“I'm sorry, Gerald. I got carried away, and she tested me, so I bit her trap.”

“Stupid!”

Damn! I know this is a big problem because seventy million dollars is a considerable amount of money, and we don't have that kind of freaking money! How can I pay for those paintings I bid on?

My eyes lightened when an idea came to my mind, and I faced my husband, “Why don't you borrow some money from the company?”

“What?” He immediately turned to me in surprise, “Are you even thinking, Hilary? Abigail is still the CEO of the McAdams group, so she will notice if there's a missing check.”

“You're the COO. Abigail already trusted you so that she won't suspect a thing.”

“That's not simple, Hilary. Seventy million is a huge amount of money. It can make us buy a mansion in Beverly Hills, but you wasted it on some freaking painting?!”

I rubbed my husband's shoulder, trying to calm him because someone might hear us. “Honey, calm down. We can solve this problem, so stop stressing yourself.”

“Stay away from me!” He pushed me, and from that moment, I knew he was serious about our problem.

Gerald sighed in disbelief before glaring at me; I lowered my head to avoid his raging eyes because it was scarier than scamming the host of this ball.

“Fine. I'll help you escape this trouble you started, but you have to promise me that this is the last stupidity you will do.”

I smiled and lifted my head; I kissed him in excitement and wrapped my arms around his neck afterward. I place my hand on his chest and smile sweetly. “See, I told you, hun. You won't let me face this problem alone because you love me.”

He took something inside his suit and wrote me a check. He handed it to me, and my eyes twinkled in victory. We may not have that kind of money, but Abigail does.

“Keep this a secret, Hilary. Don't tell this to anyone, even to Baron, because we can't still trust him,” he stated.

“Baron is a good guy, and he has stopped suspecting me ever since, so don't worry, my love. No one will find this out, even Baron.”

I kissed him and said, “I better get going before Baron suspects me.”

“Yes, you should.”

“Love you!” I waved to him before leaving our hiding spot and walked in satisfaction.

I was about to head inside the auction room when someone spoke. “You look happy.”

I swirled around to face her and replied, “Of course, Abigail. I won the painting that everyone wanted.”

“I see. Where did you get the money?” She asked.

I cross my arms before smirking, “It’s for me to know and for you to stop sticking your nose to my business.”

“Hmm,” she walked towards me, looking at me from head to toe, and grinned at my face. “As far as I know, you don't have that kind of money. Well, we can say your ex-husband is giving you child support. But that's not enough to pay for the paintings you bid for.”

“What is it to you, huh? I have s-savings!” I stammered.

She chuckled, causing my eyebrows to meet. “Are you insulting me?”

“No, I just can't help it.”

“What are you trying to say, Abby? That I can't afford to pay for those paintings I bid for?” I scoffed, “Don't underestimate me because you don't know me.”

“Forgive me, Hilary. You were right. I don't know you well, but you're a dirty player.” She moved closer to me and said, “Let's see how long you can play this game.”

“What are you talking about?” I questioned, but Abigail just smiled at me before turning around and was about to leave when I grabbed her wrist and pulled her around. “What do you mean by that?”

“Nothing. Why do you seem terrified?” She asked.

I move away, feeling my pounding heart. Abigail once turned her back to me, and I watched her back disappear from my eyes; I clenched my fist in rage.

“Don't tell me she knew something?” I murmured.

My thoughts were immediately stopped when my phone rang. I shook that thought away before reaching for my phone inside my purse and answered the call, “Mom, it'd better be urgent.”

[Hilary, your son!] She exclaimed.

“What about him, Mom? What is it now?” I rolled my eyes, uninterested in the news because she'd complain about my son's misbehavior. “I don't have time for this, Mom. I have a party to attend.”

[Hurry! He's in the hospital, and your son needs you!]

I chuckled, “Is this some prank, Mom? I know my son is naughty, and it gives you a headache, so stop bothering me—”

[No!] She yelled on the phone, [Don't you care for your son?! He's in the hospital. What kind of mother are you, Hilary? I didn't raise you to treat your child like this!]

She's complaining again, and her voice makes my ears ache, so I answer quickly, “What happened?”

[He's critical, Hilary. You better hurry before it's too late…]
