21 - Facts and sacrifices

ONE WEEK LATER.

Abigail's POV.

It's been one week since I threw myself to Baron and hid from his sight. I know this sounds ridiculous, especially since I'm the one who convinced him to take me. However, I'm a disgrace to myself and I don't know why. I took one week off and let Gerald handle the company while I was gone, which is not a good idea but having him was also a relief to me.

I've been staring at the ceiling for over two hours ever since I woke up, and my twins are playing in the nursery with their nanny. I felt so tired, and not in the mood to wake up and eat breakfast. Everything is not making sense to me now, especially since the investigator I hired hasn't called me for days.

“Ma'am Abigail,” my maid knocked on the door.

“Bernadette, please. Whatever it is, handle it yourself.”

“But Ma'am, there's a man downstairs who demands to see you.”

I sighed, “Tell Baron I'm sick. He'll leave.”

“But it's not sir Baron, Ma'am.”

I get up from my bed immediately. I looked in the mirror beside my bed and rushed to the bathroom after seeing how miserable I was.

“Tell him I'm coming!” I shouted before brushing my teeth.

I washed my face and tied my hair up before running outside and grabbing my t-shirt and pants. After that, I spray some perfume and put a light lipstick on my lips—hold on a second. Why am I doing this?

I put the lipstick down before grabbing a wipe and removing the lipstick on my lips. I take a deep breath and head out, trying to look invulnerable in front of my unexpected visitor. His back revealed to me and from where I was standing, I knew who it was.

“Gerald…” I murmured and he instantly looked around with a smile on his face. “Abigail.”

My brows met, “What are you doing here? You should be at the office, taking care of it.”

“Uh, I'm glad to see you too?”

“Get out,” I command.

“Woah, Abby. I came here to check on you because I heard you filed for a one-week leave. Are you trying to avoid me?” He questioned.

“Get out!” I grabbed his wrist and pulled him closer to the door, but Gerald stopped me. “What's wrong, Abigail? Why do you seem bothered? Are you hiding something?”

“No! So, get out!”

“Mommy?” I froze to my standing position as I heard Aiden's voice. I swallowed before glancing, “Aiden…” he was standing at the stairs with his twin. “Who is he?”

“Hi, there fellas. I'm Gerald, your Mom's—”

“He's nobody, Aiden.”

“You're the man in the mall!” Ashton exclaimed and rushed downstairs. “Hello, sir. What are you doing here in our house?” My son, Ashton, kindly asked.

“Uh, I came to visit your mom but she seemed not happy to see me.”

What is he doing? Is he trying to use my son, so I'll let him stay? Ugh!

“He's leaving now, Ashton.”

“Already?” My son inquired.

“Yes,” I pushed Gerald to the door but he's too strong. “What do you want, Gerald?” I annoyingly questioned.

He gave me the flowers he brought and smiled, “I miss you, Abby.”

“Are you my mother's boyfriend?” Aiden asked.

“Aiden!” I scolded my son and he pouted. ”Can you take my sons to their room?” I asked the nanny and she nodded before taking my sons upstairs.

I face Gerald and I'm not happy with his visit, “Leave, Gerald. I don't want to see you.”

“Are they mine, Abigail?”

I scoffed, “This again? How many times do I have to tell you that they're not your child, Gerald? They are Baron's child.”

“Those children are younger than my son, and you were pregnant before we got divorced.”

“Did you forget that I had a miscarriage because of your lovely mistress? Wake up, Gerald! My son is not yours and never will be! So, leave!” I shouted, pointing to the door.

Gerald becomes silent as if he's thinking about believing me or not. Well, I don't need him to believe me and he will never find out that our children are alive. Over my dead body!

“I demand a DNA test,” he murmured.

“Seriously?” I laughed in annoyance. “This is outrageous. How could you demand for DNA test if they're not yours.”

“How can you prove it?”

“I can prove it,” Baron came right on time although I'm not expecting him to come, but I'm still glad that he did. He stood beside me after passing Gerald by. “Aiden and Ashton are my children. Got a problem with that?”

“Yes, I have a problem with that. It seems like your children have no resemblance to you, Baron. Can you explain that?” Gerald tested him.

Baron put his hands inside his pockets and replied, “I can. Actually, Aiden and Ashton have a resemblance to their mom. It's disappointing to know that they didn't get anything from me, but knowing that they have their mom's features was enough. Was it enough answer for you to leave them alone?”

“Leave, Gerald.”

“But Abigail.”

“I said, leave!”

Gerald sighed before turning his back and walked away. I know he will wonder why I suddenly become grumpy to him, but I have my reasons. Showing up to my address without telling me is not a good idea, and I've been trying to keep my children's distance to their father.

I have to ensure Gerald won't suspect that my twins are his.

“Are you okay? I heard you're sick.”

I gulped before nodding, “I'm fine. What brings you here, Baron?”

“You haven't called me since that night, so I thought you were avoiding me. Are you?”

I shook my head and lied, “No.” Great, Abigail. You're lying to his face because you can't face the fact that you're embarrassed.

“Anyway, I have something for you.” Baron handed me a brown envelope, so I opened it out of curiosity and read the documents. “You were right, Abigail. Your father never spent his remaining days at the hospital ever since he got sick. He's been staying at his room according to his personal nurse.”

“Wait, you managed to find his nurse?”

“Didn't I mention that I will do everything for you?” He smiled sweetly and I smiled back. “Her statement proves that they did something to your father.”

“How did you convince her to speak?” I curiously inquired while reading the document in my hands. “Well, I need to give her five thousand dollars in order to make her speak since she financially needs it.”

“Oh my gosh,” I murmured.

“Yes, Abigail. Your investigator was right about the poison but they hid it. I guess, Gerald and his wife pay the doctor who did his autopsy to shut his mouth forever.”

“I can't believe this… how could they do this to my father?” I almost fainted because of what I found, and thankfully Baron was there to support me. “They're monsters!” I cried.

“Stop crying, Abigail. Your son might hear you,” he reminded me that I was not in my office but in my house. “I will make them pay!”

“Calm down, Abigail. If they find out that you already know about your dad's death record, they will hide from the law and we will lose this opportunity to lock them up forever.”

I clenched my fist, “I will kill them!”

“Please, calm down. You have to stop and think of a plan.”

“For what?! We already have enough evidence, Baron.”

“No, this is not enough. They can pay your dad's nurse and turn the table, which is dangerous for us.”

“Then what are you expecting to do?!” I can't calm myself down and this is absurd for me to process.

“Also, I came here to tell you that I already filed fake divorce papers and I want you to sign it,” he handed me another envelope, causing me to look at him confusedly. “What is going on?”

“I thought about what you said and you were right, Abby. I will marry Hilary under fake marriage without her knowing it.”

I was dumbfounded, “What? I mean, I know I said that but I changed my mind—”

“Abigail, listen. We need to sort our priorities and this is the last thing I can do for you, so sign this and let's start this game.”

I swallowed, hesitant from his wish before turning to the fake divorce papers and replied, “What if I need you, Baron? What if I can't do this by myself?”

He held and kissed my hand, “I'm always here for you and that promise will never change, Abby. Signing that divorce papers will be the cue for our game, so do it.”

I accept the pen he handed me and sign it. “Are you sure about this, Baron? Asking you to marry Hilary is the stupidest idea I ever thought of! Please, I don't want to lose you... I don't want Hilary to win again and I regret being weak and stupid.”

He nodded, “Of course, I am. Hilary won't steal me from you, and my love for you will remain. My heart belongs to you, so stop blaming yourself and focus on your goal. Don't let yourself get distracted. Now, fix yourself and go back to work. You have an ex-husband to deceive, Abigail.”
