Chapter 34: Crossroads of the Heart
Chapter 34: Crossroads of the Heart
(Evelyn POV)
"We have to go after him!" I slammed my palm against the crumbling stone arch, the chalice still warm in my other hand, its surface rippling with the vision of Rowan fleeing those twisted wolf-spirits wearing my family's faces. My rune burned hot enough to make me wince.
Tristan grabbed my wrist, his grip iron-tight despite the tremor from the cliff-pain the chalice had imprinted on him. "Evelyn, that's exactly what Azrael wants. You charge in there, you're dead, and this whole mission falls apart."
"He knows Azrael's plans!" I yanked free, water dripping from my cloak onto the marsh mud. "Rowan's been inside that citadel, lived with those secrets. If we could just"
"If we could just what?" Tristan's voice cracked, blood still crusting the corner of his mouth. "Save the man who threw you off a cliff? The one who's been Azrael's pawn from the start?" He coughed, doubling over, and I saw the black veins pulsing under his sleeve again, spreading despite the salve.
I steadied him, my dagger's hilt digging into my side. "You're dying, Tristan. We need information, anything that could turn this tide without you burning out completely."
He straightened, eyes hard. "I've been mapping something. While you were lost in those visions, I wasn't just surviving." He pulled a folded parchment from his cloak, its edges singed. "Azrael's time rifts I've tracked their patterns. Every jump he makes, every wraith he sends, it leaves traces. I can counter-attack through them, hit him where he's weak."
The former wraith-ally drifted closer, her blue glow casting shadows across the map. "The sorcerer's rifts converge at three nexus points. Strike there, and his power fragments."
I studied the map, my heart hammering. The chalice pulsed again, showing Rowan stumbling, a wolf-spirit's claws raking his back. "But if Rowan dies before we get his intel"
"Then we work without it!" Tristan snapped, then softened, his hand finding mine. "I know you felt something in that vision. His regret, his... whatever it was. But Evelyn, this is bigger than him. Than us."
The air shimmered, and Morgana's spectral form materialized, her eyes glowing that eerie gold. "Bickering children," she rasped, her staff thumping the mud. "You waste precious moments while the spirit grows stronger."
"Morgana." I stepped forward, the chalice extended. "Tell us if we save Rowan, what happens? The truth."
Her lips curled into something between a smile and a sneer. "Saving him will echo the first betrayal, blood heir. The cycle repeats: rescuers become betrayers. Aeloria saved her Eastmarch prince once, and look where that led a broken seal and centuries of suffering."
Tristan's jaw tightened. "So you're saying leave him to die."
"I'm saying," Morgana hissed, leaning closer, her breath cold, "that some knots must be cut, not untangled. But you won't listen, will you, girl? Your heart's too soft, even after it's been shattered."
The vision in the chalice shifted. Rowan collapsed against a citadel wall, the wolves circling, but his eyes gods, his eyes held a desperate clarity. He was mouthing something. I leaned in, the chalice's surface rippling. "Labyrinth... Azrael's mind... fractured."
"Wait." I grabbed Tristan's arm. "Look at this. Rowan's trying to tell us something about Azrael."
Tristan squinted at the vision. "Labyrinth? What's he talking about?"
I closed my eyes, letting the chalice's power flow through me, the way it had when I drank from it. The ethereal tears responded, pulling me deeper into the vision until I was there, standing beside Rowan in that shadowed corridor. He turned, his eyes widening.
"Evelyn?" His voice was hoarse, disbelieving. "How "
"The chalice. I can share visions now." I stepped closer, my form translucent, ghostly. "What's this about a labyrinth?"
He clutched his bleeding side, the wolf-spirits' howls echoing closer. "Azrael's mind it's not whole. When he merged with the spirit, it fractured him. His consciousness is a maze, and somewhere in there, the real him is trapped, battling shadows he's implanted. His love for Liora fights his obsession with power."
My breath caught. "So there's still something human in him?"
"Barely. But Evelyn" He stumbled, and I reached out instinctively, my hand passing through his arm. "If you can reach that part, use the chalice to purify it, you might sever his control over the spirit without killing him. But you'd have to come here, into the citadel, into his mind."
The wolves burst around the corner, their twisted faces snarling. Rowan raised his sword, slashing at one. "Go! Before they sense you!"
The vision snapped, and I gasped, back in the marsh, Tristan holding me upright. "What did you see?"
I told him everything, the words tumbling out. "Rowan's right if we can fracture Azrael's control from the inside, we might not need the blood rite. Or at least, we'd weaken him enough to survive it."
Tristan's face was unreadable, his amulet glowing faintly. "You want to dive into a sorcerer's mind? Evelyn, that's suicide."
"It's a chance!" I gripped his shoulders, my rune flaring. "A chance to save you from burning out, to stop the spirit without more death. Isn't that worth it?"
Morgana's specter laughed, cold and bitter. "Worth? Child, worth is measured in blood. But if you insist on this folly, know that Azrael's labyrinth will test you. Every fear, every doubt, every moment of betrayal he'll use it all against you."
Tristan was silent for a long moment, his eyes searching mine. Then he exhaled, a resigned sound. "Fine. But I'm not letting you do this alone." He reached into his cloak, pulling out a second amulet smaller, cruder, its runes barely glowing. "I've been working on this. A shadow clone. It'll drain me, probably knock years off whatever life I have left, but it can follow you into rifts, back you up."
"Tristan, no"
"Yes." His voice was firm, brooking no argument. "You go charging into Azrael's mind, you'll need someone to pull you out if it goes wrong. This clone, it's tethered to me. I'll feel everything it does, guide it remotely. It's the best I can do."
I stared at the crude amulet, my throat tight. "You're giving up more of yourself for me."
"For the realms," he corrected, but his eyes softened. "And yeah, for you. Because even if you're too stubborn to admit it, you need me."
I pulled him into a quick, fierce hug, feeling his heart hammering against mine. "Thank you."
The former wraith drifted closer, her voice a whisper. "The portal to the citadel lies east, through the Elder Mire. But be swift the spirit's rage grows. It senses your relics."
We gathered our things, Tristan strapping on the shadow clone amulet with shaking hands. The marsh around us began to tremble, the ground splitting in jagged lines. "What now?" I muttered, drawing my dagger.
Morgana's specter flickered. "The spirit stirs. Your time runs short."
Tristan pressed his main amulet, its runes blazing blue, and a portal tore open, its edges crackling with unstable energy. "Let's go. East, Elder Mire, then the citadel. Evelyn" He hesitated, his face pale. "If Rowan turns on you in there, don't hesitate. End it."
"I won't have to," I said, more to convince myself than him. "I felt his regret. There's still something salvageable."
"You better be right." He stepped toward the portal, but the marsh quake intensified, the ground buckling. The portal wavered, splitting into two swirling vortexes, one blue, one sickly green.
"Tristan!" I lunged, but a fissure opened between us, water surging up. He stumbled back, his amulet sparking. "Evelyn, go! I'll find another way through!"
"No! We stay together!" I reached across the widening gap, but the green vortex pulsed, sucking me toward it. The chalice slipped from my grip, tumbling into the mud, and I scrabbled for it as the pull intensified.
"Evelyn, grab onto something!" Tristan's voice was distant now, the blue portal flickering behind him. The shadow clone amulet glowed, and a faint, ghostly version of him materialized beside me, grabbing my arm. "I'm with you! Just hold on!"
But the green vortex roared, and the ground beneath me crumbled. I snatched the chalice just as the portal swallowed me whole, the shadow clone's grip slipping. The last thing I saw was Tristan's horrified face before the world became a whirlwind of green light and suffocating magic.
I landed hard on cold stone, the impact jarring my teeth. The chalice rolled away, and I scrambled after it, my dagger clattering beside me. The air was thick with incense and something metallic blood, maybe. I pushed to my feet, taking in my surroundings.
Tall, shifting corridors stretched in every direction, their walls etched with glowing runes that pulsed in time with my rune. The Twilight Citadel's labyrinthine halls. I was alone.
"Tristan?" My voice echoed, swallowed by the oppressive silence. The shadow clone was gone, its connection severed. "Tristan, can you hear me?"
Static crackled from the amulet still looped around my neck Tristan's main one, our link. His voice came through, faint and distorted. "Evelyn... portal... separated... find Rowan... I'll... reach you..."
The connection cut out, leaving only the hum of the citadel's magic. I gripped my dagger tighter, the chalice's warmth a small comfort in my other hand. "Alright, Rowan. Where are you?"
A scream tore through the corridors, raw and agonized. Rowan's voice. But it came from multiple directions at once, each echo layered with pain and desperation.
My heart lurched. I picked a corridor at random and ran, my boots slapping the stone, the rune on my palm burning brighter with each step. Another scream, closer this time, but when I rounded the corner, the hallway was empty, the sound now behind me.
"Azrael," I muttered, spinning. "You're playing games."
A low laugh rumbled through the citadel, deep and mocking. "Not games, blood heir. Truths. Can you find your betrayer before he bleeds out? Or will you wander my halls until the spirit consumes you both?"
